(For the Future) What Will FPS War Look Like?

Sorry if these have been mentioned already, but armored and heavily armed SRVs, maybe even capable of functioning as APCs...

Skimmers and turrets are already there...

Large scale infantry operations are unlikely, but infiltration missions, guerilla warfare, special forces stuff...

Maybe stealing an enemy military vessel from a guarded outpost and then use it to wreak havoc on a POI? Then land and use the enemy SRV/APC to establish a data uplink to the defenseless facility so we can remotely open the sealed airlock doors, then infiltrate it to steal some important intel, vanquishing any remaining opposition inside on foot in tight indoors CQCombat?

Missions like that I can imagine.

three exampels from literature & tv:
a) the expanse. missions like searching a hidden base or destroyed ship in an asteroid. or bringing out some people in a station under attack/blockade.

b) firefly. fighting from ground against landing fleets and ground troops, in carves and similar.

c) stanislaw lem, "peace on earth". scouting a planet with a lot of skimmers/ai/...

I hope they abandon this FPS 'add-on' game - or at least keep it completely independent (budget wise as well) from ED. It should be an add-on/side-show just like CQC/Arena.

I want a space flight sim, not a FPS. If I want an FPS I'd buy one. I don't want any of my 'subscription' dollars going to that.

Keeping this thread on topic - that is what I want as far as FPS. Crickets and make-believe talk such as this. Keep my ED development dollars working on the flight sim.

True, but you should never slate a mechanic based on it's implementation in one game.

Actually, X:R does that pretty well. Players who want to do the whole 'immersion FPS' can do so, whereas people in a hurry can just use the docking or remote hail options to get the things done. Its how ED should do it, IMHO.

Looking at the game design currently, I see a 'wing' of 4 players landing on something, getting out of their ship(s), and shooting NPC's. How that get's dressed up will be fun to see. One thing I can see is that there will be no real reason to PvP with others. It will probably be allowed...but it, just as it is now, will be an endeavour that only gets in the way of the goal of the game...changing influence in systems.

If other PC's can see the group from their ship...just drop a couple of torpedoes, problem solved.

Well, there are particular limitations on how FP mode is able to take shape. First of all, instancing makes things complicated for large-scale stuff. Too complicated, imo. We're unlikely to see more than 30 or so players per instance except in rather exceptional circumstances, especially given how the latency and quality of connections can vary across players. We probably won't, then, see large-scale player-oriented battles. I'd like it to be otherwise, but I can't see it right now. Secondly, it's worth remembering that a large proportion of the playerbase consider competition-oriented FPS to be kiddie games, or at the very least have never played them and have no desire to play them. This suggests to me that should any development for FPS in the context of conflicts take place, it wouldn't be (insert multiple-of-two instance size here) squad/team-based in nature. It doesn't seem, to me at least, to be a viable way to run FPS, and that's even without considering that there can be more than 1,000 conflicts taking place at any one time in the bubble: Even the competitive PvP crowd in the current game stick to well-known systems or initiate their conflicts through other channels. Finally, I wonder whether people tend to play this game in rather small groups. All the people I IRL know outside of Communism Interstellar who play the game do so in groups of up to four - one wing, basically. Without access to the kind of data that the developers have I can't be sure, but I suspect that many of the people who play have neither the numbers nor inclination to call themselves a clan. Development of the game hasn't done anything to change my opinion on that, and I would expect it to continue - player-backed minor factions are just that, for example: player-backed.

So you have certain restrictions, at least initially. Any FPS conflict would need to be optional, small-scale, focussed around small, co-operative groups and employ the same P2P architecture while not penalising players for high or low ping. In other words, I would expect any FPS component to the game to be more like Left for Dead than Battlefield 4, which will undoubtedly make the forums even saltier, at least for a while. It would be objective-oriented so that it can be tied into the mission system easily, and would initially be more like Half Life than a straight-up action game (although without the narrative.) We might see an arena counterpart to ... ummm... Arena... for it - it wouldn't be massively difficult to design dedicated arenas with suitable bots for it as both a training simulation for the real thing. Maybe the same model for Arena might make an appearance too - dedicated PvP game modes - but I wouldn't expect it to be part of the main game; the playerbase is just too diffuse for that.

On the other hand, while it may be important what you want, you may want to consider that they pretty much promised to thousands of backers during kickstarter they'd try to add it. It will happen, it will not be 'completely independent' from ED and it will use the budget. That is part of the plan, has been for years, and its kinda odd to request that to be changed because you dont like your money to be spend on what they promised to spend it on...

While you're completely right in the above, I would just like to say one phrase which that shows that it's not concrete

OFFLINE MODE

Also, I'm not getting the snobby looking down on FPS attitude. Some of the most thoughtful, engaging things which have handled combined arms well that I have played could be regarded as first person shooters, such as ArmA and WWII Online (note: the last sentence is not to do with the above quotation, but a prevalent attitude running throughout this thread).

There's a lot FD could learn from FPS games in general about weapon balance and effort/reward ratios. The games I play in the genre don't have one ideal loadout, but force yo to make compromises depending on what you're intending to do, from high DPS/poor accuracy to very accurate but low damage at range, to 'you'd better make sure that first shot lands because you only get one chance' to 'oh look at my lovely knife...'

At the moment, the overall balance for PvP is rather screwed.

If I wanted to play an FPS game, I'd buy some junk like, CoD, Arma, Battlefield etc etc.

I don't. Elite has been about flying spaceships since Sept 1984, I'd prefer they didn't cater for the pewpew crowd in some silly attempt to get more sales.

Frankly, I've never understood the omnipresent desire for FP(S) components in space-sims. EVE did it, SC is doing it, and people want it (I guess?) for Elite.

Can't a space sim just be a space sim?

I mentioned this exact attitude in my first post on the thread.

You do realise that FPS is actually a rather broad church, don't you?

Arma is heavily focussed on realism; CoD is probably the closest mass-market game you'll get to Arena in FPS (which you should try, btw - Arena is really good fun!) Battlefield is a bit more tactical, etc., etc.

Not that you'll listen.

I don't mind basic FPS components which accompany the associated action, for example trying to steal someone else's ship.

Or even some basic attacking / defending of bases would be fine (at a simple level). Anything more than that and it just wouldn't be Elite anymore.

Its going to be difficult enough for FD to implement the stuff they want to do now as it is. FPS style gameplay is way down the list currently, several years at least I would have thought.

Lets get the base game sorted first before we start thinking about stuff like this.

The way I see it is that if enough of the community wants it, FD can actually understand how to do it properly, and it's not overly onerous to code, why not?

It's about a different environment for playing the game.

The base game is already very solid.

Repairing internals and space walking excites me far more than a fleshed-out FPS component. I have to give credit to Star Citizen there. Going full EVA is really cool. Stealing ships is even cooler.

Yup. I want to be a cool dude doing space stuff. To that end, "FPS" as a shorthand for "get out of your chair and move around and do stuff," sounds great. Not at all interested in crouching behind cover and swapping between two carryable weapons while a cigar-chomping sargeant with giant shoulderpads yells "Move!move!move!" and/or "listen up". As far as personal combat goes, I think everyone should fight with spears only. We already know we'll eventually be hunting dinosaurs on atmospheric planets, might as well do it right.
