DISASTER

500 ly away from SAG A, and made a school boy error. Came into land on a planet to sleep for the night and forgot to look at the gravity. Seconds later, eject, eject, eject as I crashed into the ground.

The upside though is that I don't have to look at the Keelback cockpit ever again, plus flying the ship was painful, time to get my Diamondback X out of retirement and head out again after I see what some of the engineers can do to my ship first.

Mate, gutted for you, not least because it's taken me 3 months and I'm still 6500 Lys from SagA, so can appreciate the time you've put in (unless you were buckyballing, in which case I whole different kind of respect is due!)

It's a shame to hear of any CMDR who has creamed in on any aspect of any exploration trip so genuinely, I feel for you CMDR and respect for your guts and attitude to keep on going.

Sorry to hear about your loss. RP aside, logging out on planets is a bad idea for two reasons:

1) You may run into a bug where you find yourself inside the planet on relog. Can result in ship damage and / or destruction.
2) Players typically end their sessions before going to bed, meaning you're landing your ship when really tired and barely keeping your eyes open. Bad idea.

Take this as a learning experience and log off in space. Good luck on your travels! :)

It's happened to me before. I got wrapped up talking to someone else and didn't watch my speed on the approach, then because the planet's gravity was too high my thrusters couldn't save me.

At least you can fly the DBX again. I love those ships.

Ooh ouch. Bad luck Cmdr.
Been there. Done that ;) I was about 900ly away for Sag A and my pressure was needing to choof off to work. Same result.
It's quite sickening. I doubled down on mine....went back to the same system aaaaaand faceplanted the star. Knocked 1% off my hull and 40% off my pride.

I started my journey in January, was taking my time. Not the end of the world as I have seen some amazing sights. Have taken some screenshots of places as well so I can get back there.

I nearly always land on the planet when finishing. Only had one problem when inside the planet, easily fixed by logging into the non horizons client.
But yeah tiredness didn't help much this time.

Yep, love my DBX. Such a nice ship to fly and a more interesting cockpit than the Keelback.

The DBX is an excellent ship, the only issue I had with it is the flashing red light in the face.

I love my Keelback, the view is good and proved to be durable vessel, I think the handling is also fine for exploration. Though I'm looking forward to fly something else as well, it is definitely a keeper.

Oh, and sorry for your loss CMDR!

Sorry to hear of your crash so close to your goal, but not a "school boy error".

You have to get into the habit of checking, that the problem and so far it's only resulted in heavy damage for me.
The other error I keep making is turning on to my side, which on high gravity planets is also a BAD. As your main thrusters under your ship not on sides and you drop like a stone :(

That is why it was a school boy error. I checked every time apart from last night, when I was feeling especially tired (another error, don't fly when too tired).

I must have landed on well over a hundred planets on my journey and always checked. Hey ho, not the end of the world.

Been there, done that, lost the exploration data. I was on the way back and had only 5,000 l.y. to go when I decided to take my Courier for a bit of canyon racing to relieve the monotony.

You have my sympathies.

Happened to me too, also feel for you. Get back out there and show that planet who's boss next time ;)

I love the DBE as well, but I have two main issues with it:

1. She needs just one more class 1 internal to make her a true capable explorer. I don't care how it's done: break up one of the internals into two smaller ones, even get rid of the large hardpoint to justify it if you have to, but it needs one more size 1 internal!!!

2. The scoop is too slow. This is honestly not a deal breaker for me, I ran time trials between my Asp and my DBE to see how fast they were in comparison, and the slower scoop every six jumps didn't make a huge difference to be blunt. Still, it is a drawback that makes a lot of explorers ignore the ship.

The lack of internals is the deal breaker for me though, it means flying without an AFMU if you want an SRV, and when going into deep space that's just not a great idea unfortunately. It can be done, it's just not great. For exploring around the bubble though I love the DBE. Honestly if they would add just one more internal to it I'd fly the DBE over the Asp, as I like the looks of the ship better and I even love the cockpit better.

I totally agree with your point, on the other hand, I'm that kind of person who'd never buy an Asp - just because it is a rational and boring choice, and also very ugly.
Since I'm not into exploring the fringes, I'm okay as long as the ship can swallow all exploration related modules, and the DBX can do it - so will the FDL, that will be next exploration vessel. Yeah, I'll miss the AMFU, but I'll consider it my "iron man mode". :)
