Accidentally Deleted Save...

I already posted a Support Ticked. This isn't about getting my save back.

I just hate how easy it is to delete the save. I was using Steam In-Home streaming when the game froze on me. I restarted it and went into resolution settings and changed it to borderless so the game would no longer freeze. I changed it back to fullscreen for proper aspect ratio formatting, and that is when it froze again. I hit B twice and then A twice to quit to main menu.

In reality, I selected CLEAR SAVE somehow and it was already too late to realize since it was frozen. Why can't we put a password lock or some sort of hold-button mode to make it actually difficult to delete the save? I knew this would happen to me one day and now I have to wait a week+ just to play the game again. There isn't any other game I play where a CLEAR SAVE button is right there waiting to be accidentally pressed. /rant.

Well, now I get a big break from Elite Dangerous. Fly safe and do be careful using Steam In-Home Streaming!

You could try contact support via support side: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/ And ask to get your save back. They may do it.

No matter how many conformation messages you add to CLEAR SAVE button people will still accidentally do it. I would say that adding more wouldn't decrease accidentally deleted saves.

I've yet to even touch the clear save button. But I keep worrying I may hit it by accident, especially like you, if the PC locks up.
But I think your save should be only removable from your Elite Dangerous account, on the web page.
Not in game. And it should prompt for your password, or a pin.

Thats very very sad and I would be gutted, however I would never button bash on a freeze. Alt tab and end process in task manager is your friend!

I like the way it's done in some mmo's, you press the delete button and then have to type DELETE into a text box to confirm that you really wanted to.

The Clear Save option should send you and e-mail with a confirmation link to a page that requires you to type your password and confirm again.

support will restore it. You can always clear your save to start fresh if you want and revert back to old save if you want.

I did that. Bummer isn't it.

I lost 10000LY of exploration data, all my money, all my rankings everything. I didn't ask support to re-instate my commander but I did raise a bug report because of the options screen freezing which is what lead to the keyboard mashing and the delete. It would be easy for the thing to just ask "which commander do you want to delete". Of course it would only let you delete your own.

On the bright side, it forced to me crack open a lovely bottle of wine as I sadly negotiated my brand new sidewinder and its pathetic pulse lasers off to the nearest nav beacon. I actually enjoyed being in a sidey again and it wasn't long before I had all my old ships back so don't despair :)

I'm not despairing. I submitted a ticked before I posted this thread asking for my account to be recovered. I opened this thread because I have seen this before; CMDRs accidentally deleting their save. I've always thought it could happen to me. Steam In-Home streaming is potentially dangerous. Next time it freezes (streaming freeze), I will have to go to the host machine and manually exit instead of guessing the menu like I did earlier.

But like I said, there is no game I can think of where it is so easy to delete all that hard work. The Clear Save button needs to be revamped so that isn't even a problem.

UI Design Rule #1 for destructive options: default action must be CANCEL!

YES!

Support will have you back up and running faster than you think. I did the same thing a while back. Bad Mouse Driver, yeah that's my excuse. In any case, Support had me back in the Verse by that evening. The Clear Save does give you one chance...Are you Sure?

If i remember correctly, the placement in the early days of the game was even worse (in the 'Main Menu').

i appreciate the developers improving the situation slightly by moving it to 'Options'.

But when playing around with DK2 recently, i had a really hard time navigating the small Window on the Desktop (which i had to use when an issue with the HMD occurred), because of the small resolution in the window, which i could barely read, i was feeling very uncomfortable going into the Options Folder.

I avoid going in the Options Folder as much as i can, because of that terrifying 'Clear Save'-Button in that sub-folder :D.

That sounds like a very good solution to avoid accidentally deleting a save-file!

Why a week + ?
When I accidentally cleared my save when I was trying Google Cardboard. I got the save back within a day and after a few more PMs to support, I got everything restored except for exploration data within a couple of days.
Support was very good.

Re-entering your password to confirm deletes is definitely the best safeguard. I've just lost a Cutter, an Anaconda, Python and Asp, plus Elite trader and explorer ranks and 2.5 BILLION credits due to my 12-year old nephew messing about on my PC. I really, really hope FD support can retrieve them.

They really need to add a phrase to delete thing.

I get lagged up in the menus all the time when I'm in border-less and switching between windows and netflix ontopwindow thing and all that.

I've accidentally changed graphics options and gone to report a player thing and all that sort of stuff so I could see myself accidentally hitting delete save.

My other pet peeve is when I go into the esc menu and my buttons are still controlling the ship interface behind the esc menu.
I jettisoned some quest cargo the other day when I was navigating the esc menu to turn the audio/music off. This seems to happen to me occasionally.
