Distant Worlds Expedition - Announcements

Hello,

Have you seen that? Jaques Station will jump to Beagle Point (if the community goal is achieved) !

Now that a whole lot of us already left BP.. now they're doing it? How is this even useful to the majority of the expedition? I assume this won't be a permanent location of the Jacques station, so the ones who can benefit from this are the bubble commanders who get a free ticket to the other side of the galaxy without actually having to fly there. Sure they'd still have to fly back or wait for Jacques to depart, but still, even one way is quite a trip to get a free ride on. Meanwhile the vast majority of the DW expedition are completely unaffected by this, their achievement of flying that far undermined by others getting there by teleport; want to go to Beagle Point? Just dock at Jacques before this date and wait for it to move! I'm sorry but doing this now is a joke. Not a particularly funny one, either.

Jaques Station was already horrendously immersion breaking, but this one destroys it completely. Handwavium physics is fine for a game as long as it is at least reasonably internally consistent. But using ED physics this jump would likely require more fuel than the mass of the entire galaxy....

And what a great way to downplay the achievement of all the CMDRs who have made it to the 65K club :(

It may just be me but it sort of sounds like Jacques will be jumping to Beagle....and staying there forever?

"Well, I've been wandering the galaxy for over forty years now, and the truth is that after a while, travel starts to lose its allure. You've got to remember, I've been alive for several centuries. The things that used to excite you just sort of...lose their spark. I thought a long-distance leap might rekindle my enthusiasm."

Maybe Jacques Station is about to become the most distant station in the game, but not returning? In that case anyone who didn't want to make the journey home the old fashioned way had better evacuate the station pronto! :D

If the goal of this Jacques is to rekindle his enthusiasm for jumping around the galaxy, then doing one final jump and staying that forever doesn't seem to fit the idea. Could just be that the plan is that but it was written badly but the way it's written, I'm reading it like it's a temporary thing.

Couldn't agree more. +1.

I'm still totally going to visit the place. Again.

But from the sounds of the conversation, am I right in thinking a lot of people here oppose the CG and want it to fail?

It depends.

A permanent monument out at BP is actually a great idea and plays testament to all those who made the place special over the past year or so.

If the spacestation is a short cut there and back for hitchhikers, its a really bad idea - none more so than for the reason you pointed out - BP will be haven to griefers killing genuine explores who took time to travel there the old fashioned way.

Some clarification from FD on what's what would help.

Personally, I hope the CG succeeds with the help of the Fuel Rats. Besides, I don't want to deny old Jaques his moment after all this time.

And also, if player killers do hitch a ride out there, unless Jaques has state-of-the-art repair and outfitting facilities, they may well find themselves stuck there... almost indefinitely. :D

Oh my, that's an excellent point:

If Jaques does stay permanently (or even for quite a while), hitching a ride out there will be something of self-trolling maneuver. After all, there is no suiciding to warp back to the bubble -- your respawn point is now in Beagle Point until you make the 65kly trip back successfully. And heaven help you if you didn't bring a ship with a jump range capable of crossing the Abyss. :D

All should be welcome to Beagle Point at their own peril (missing the trip back, getting stuck, etc).

Too late. I've already applied to have a minor faction @Jacques Station @Beagle Point.

All your data are belong to us.
