It's not too bad at the moment, for the Fed at least. I was getting a rank or two a night grinding in Tun. I understand that it used to be a hell of a lot faster, but that was back when my only concern was seeing how far out of the bubble I could get.

That's part of the reason why I started grinding for ranks now. It sounds like donation missions are getting nerfed into oblivion with 1.6/2.1, so I want to get to Rear Admiral at least before that happens.

Unfortunately, ranking up in the Empire is a whole different animal than ranking up in the Federation. I've been working at it for months (not grinding until recently) and I'm at Marquis.
On the other hand, I haven't purposefully done a Federation mission since I left the starter systems, and I'm a Warrant Officer. By accident.

Clipper is a fine ship. Just made baron myself the other day. Painted it black for the giggles and built it into stealth. Then bought another that I will turn into a support ship for wing combat.

All the Imperial ships are really good in their own way. Been flying a Clipper for the CG. No smuggling, but I've been interdicted by the odd NPC. I throttle down, fly away as soon as possible and jump when I can. Even with a crappy shield, I get out unscathed.

I'm a knight currently, but I'm like a breath away from lord! I can't wait to add the clipper and cutter to my collection! I looked it up and you can actually kit out a clipper to fly as fast as an eagle!

Oh, and if anyone is trying to grab elite combat rank: compromised Nav beacons. I don't know why but there are tons of elite ships at cnb's and killing pilots of high rank will increase the rate that your rank grows.
There's one in my home system in Kunti. We have a good group of bounty hunters here usually so feel free to join our wing and hunt!

Same for me! I didn't even try, and I'm an Ensign with the Federation! Yet been grinding with the Imps, and I'm still a Knight... I've resigned to the fact that I'll never own a Cutter, lol. It came out in December, it's May, and I'm not even halfway to being allowed to buy it, lol.

Please share the secret to getting a black clipper.. Or do you mean the charcoal grey, which is sadly a long way from black when there's any decent amount of light shining on it. Lighting in the outfitting section is deceptively dull compared to sunlight or most other sources outside a station. I'm finding tactical crimson best bet at the moment.

Quick back OT - congrats OP, I'd take some time to enjoy the clipper before moving onto the duke grind, that part is nasty. The cutter is eventually worth it though.

With pesky npc's now going to be legging it when they're getting panned, I wonder if it's going to become a relevant ship for more than just trading & piracy. Just rebought an annie for pewpew duty and I suspect it may struggle tbh, it doesn't have much puff outside the traditional spinning battles.
