Unsure buyer.

Elite dangerous is on sale so I'm thinking of buying it but I'm unsure if I'll like it I enjoy a strong narrative and sense of purpose in games and I know this does not have a campaign or single player I also am worried about being killed by other players a few dozen times before I have even gotten a grip on the controls like in day z this also seems similar to eve which I found rather boring so am I the wrong kind of person for this game ?

Hum, watch Elite dangerous on Twitch, watch videos on Youtube, starting with Elite Dangerous tutorials : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crL9H_Vx68Y&list=PL7glm5rbPHKxnltQU1SLxdqQrENIXJGUr

Well, physics are plane like, universe has events, but as opposite to an RPG (mmo or not) you start being a star dust, not a born hero... what else...

Elite has always been a grinding game but when there are many ways of grinding, you don't have to grind, in fact, you just work to earn money ^_^. You can go to journey if you want (solo is better for exploration as collected data is lost when killed) as you get money from exploration. When Horizons come out you'll be able to land on planets too and drive a SRV (a moon buggy like car) and find more things to do.

I never played Eve Online but watched some videos and don't think it's similar :
- for example, creating a character, only one for now, is only giving him/her a name
- there is one "race", Human. Thargoids may come later but I don't know how they'll introduce them knowing a little bit of their story
- Factions are not fighting openly you don't have to choose. Powerplay feature (see videos) allow you to have a sub faction to fight for some time
- no class like
- I read someday someone complaining because ship were manually driven in Elite and automatically driven in Eve
etc etc

To Buy or not to buy ? I you have enjoyed playing any game at the same price for only 5h, you can blinding buy it because, you'll spend more that 5h just to be more than a pilot beginner :)
Be beware, it's not story driven, there are no hands to show you the way

Luke: Vader... Is the dark side stronger?
Yoda: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

Elite is in the light side of the force ^_^

If you lose a ship you must have 10% of its cost available to buy it back. If you don't, and it's your only ship, you're back in a Sidewinder. Even if the lost ship is a 700 mill cr Imperial Cutter. The most important thing:

Don't fly what you can't rebuy.

Always have that 10%. Always. The rebuy cost is on the right hand panel of your ship.

Rebuy is 5% I thought?

Anyway, my advice is play the tutorials and look at tutorial videos on YouTube. The game is hard especially at the beginning and the learning curve is steep.

But don't be discouraged - the community here is great and there will always be people willing to offer advice or wing up in the game.

I only started about 2 weeks ago. I think the first 3 hours of gameplay were just in tutorials trying to get my head around it but you get to a point where you just have to jump in and see what happens. If you give it a chance this game can be amazing. I mostly play in solo at the moment as im a bit shy but i also play with a buddy who started at the same time. We'd be more than happy to wing up if you want a little help and some people to learn with.

One last thing: the people on this forum are probably the nicest most helpful people you'll ever find. Dont heaitate to ask anyone anything at all on here.

Alright I'm doing it Thanks everyone here for your help if this what the community of elite dangerous is like I'm a little less worried

Ugh, another life gone............
Once Elite gets to you you're forever lost, trust me I know...............
Just say goodbye to life as you know it and accept it, that's the least painfull way.

Sheesh I love this game.....

Btw, welcome Commander, if you ever need some company just add me, my GT is Dutchman141

I was going to be the first to say 'No'. I worry about your attachments to goals. BUT this is, hands down, the best/most helpful forum around. And, whisper it, it's more friendly than the PC forum. You've lucked out my friend.
btw as mentioned above, solo (and the lack of any penalty while still in the starter ship) is your friend to start with OR you could team up with any of the many, ridiculously helpful CMDRs (That's Commanders. Prepare for a MAJOR jargon download into your brain), who hand-hold new players. You're certainly not alone right now. The sale has meant an influx of new CMDRs.
Also there are goals. There's a always something else to reach for.
Then there's the question of narrative. There IS narrative. Some is player-led similar to the faction interaction of EVE, but there is also an underlying narrative that we're ALL in the process of slowly (VERY slowly) uncovering.
Which brings us to the most important thing you'll learn in ED: Patience. Without patience you will quit in a day. Without patience you will never progress beyond the Sidewinder. Without patience you will certainly never attain the higher ranks.
Anyway, since you've decided to go ahead, a very warm welcome to both the game and the forum.

It's 5%. Easy way to remember that is, 20 million worth of ship = 1 million rebuy. :)

Threads like this always serve a good reminder of that initial learning curve. We've all been there, but it's easy to forget just how bad it is. However, having left base camp far behind, even though there's plenty of mountain ahead and above us at moments like this we can all reflect on just how very far we've already come. Well done everyone.
And New guys? We left ropes and crampons and a few of us are sherpas. Happy climbing!

The learning curve is awesome.

It's not often that it takes me more than a day's worth of playing before I've figured out the core mechanics.

I'm not sure I'd call what ED has a learning "curve", per se. It's like a bit of a curve, and you seem to be making progress, and you can help all those quaint rookies further down the slope. But then one day it's not a curve anymore and you're on some other kind of graph... Maybe there is no curve, and you're staring at abstract geometries wondering how you got there.

As in: I've been playing on and off (due to Horizons not being on console, frankly) since December, but I didn't know the 7 Second tip, nor did I remember that Y+Rb toggles FA... and I mentioned to a newcomer just recently on these boards that 'don't forget to look at all your face button toggles to see what's hidden there'. A day or say later I found/discovered the FA toggle. ;-) I think it was only this month that I found out about deselected gimballed to fire fixed. Very simple things, but veritable game changers (I never used FA off as I always thought you needed to dive into the tab).

Perhaps when someones gets to the very top of that curve, it looks like a curve/incline. But a lot of the time it can be a curve, then a different graph, then it's a square or a circle...

Please forgive my slight thread hijack but deselect gimballed to fire fixed? As in you can have a gimballed weapon equipped but turn off/on the gimballed aspect?

As in; if a ship deploys chaff, just deselect the target and your gimballed weapons will 'fly true' [through the chaff], meaning you can keep the damage up and not waste a whole bunch of shots.

I thought Eve Online had a steep learning curve. ED has a near vertical cliff to climb. Though there a few rest points a long the way. I spent about 7 years playing EVE and I have to say that ED is actually a little more dificult to learn but thanks to FDev I have found a space game I can actually fly a space ship. And thanks to the community there are more Sherpas than there systems in EVE. You have made a good choice to join the cool kids here in the Milkyway.

I think I speak for many on here when I say we like the way things are set up. The learning process is steep, but the satisfaction is exponentially increased. The difficulty alone tends to filter the player-base. You'll find a generally more mature group here than many other games. And, on this forum particularly, there is such a ridiculous willingness to help others. Every day with ED is another day in which you learn something. Be it the basics, or professions you simply haven't find time for, incredible vistas, controller short-cuts you never noticed, dogfight tactics you never thought of. Someone once said that ED was wide but shallow. Not so, especially post-Horizons and looking to the future. It's cool to be part of such a nuanced universe, and such a friendly community.

OP, if you want a bit of immersion and narrative, don't forget to periodically check Galnet when docked. It usually has a few articles about what is going on in the rest of the Galaxy.
I don't bother with it myself (small cog in a big machine), but you may get some mileage from it.

This is a big galaxy right so how long does it usually take you to get from station to station ?

It depends on your Frame Shift Drive. Elite: Dangerous is a grindy game which means you need to get a lot of credits in order to get the best of the best gear.

Is that an expansion ?

Yes, it's a expansion that is coming out on June 3rd. $30 for people who already bought Elite: Dangerous. $60 within the Deluxe Edition (is coming out June 3rd aswell) which includes the full game and the expansion.

I did forget to ask is death permanent here ?

Yes and no. If you don't have enough money for the insurance of your ship... you will lose your ship and any cargo in it. But if you have insurance, then you have the ability to rebuy your ship, but all your cargo will be lost. http://inara.cz/ is a neat way to keep track of all your credits, ships, and more and not write them down on a note pad or remember the prices.

Tips:

1) Keep Fuel Rats ( http://www.fuelrats.com/ ) bookmarked. The Fuel Rats offer a free service to everyone to provide fuel for stranded Commanders in the galaxy. Anywhere, any system... they will help you.

2) Head over to the Elite: Dangerous Xbox One subreddit ( https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteOne ). It's a great way to get news fast, make new friends and get new tips/advice. They also have a clan ( http://inara.cz/wing/238 ) and a Discord server ( https://discordapp.com/invite/0Z0jfYXDNYxl5H71 ).

3) http://reddit.com/r/EliteCG is a great way to keep track of Active Community Goals to make more credits.
