The Star Citizen Thread v 4

It's paid access to the alpha, an entirely different concept altogether.

The ALPHA is the release available to ALL the backers currently, that would be 2.3.

Not the PTU. You can even send a million angry emails to CIG about it, it won't change a thing, the PTU is not the Alpha Access, the Alpha Release IS (and the Alpha Release was what you HAD to Pay the Pass for before!).

I'm telling you how it is... if you like it or not is other story. You can criticize all you want about the subscribers access to the PTU... but it has nothing to do with the alpha access.

I'm sorry, I thought that by its very definition, "telling it like it is" would be to forgo all the made up buzzwords like "PTU" and "alpha access" (whose definitions are so vague nobody can agree on them anyway) and simply call the system elitist.

Even in that case is paid access to the PTU, not the alpha. The alpha is public, the PTU is not until last stage.

Look I know that the sort of trash CIG squeeze out whilst exclaiming "behold the Savior of PC gaming" is of a really low standard in terms of quality, completeness, value for money and comparison to the competition. I understand that RSI/CIG alpha releases don't meet the industry standard for real alpha's, but that's not the issue I'm not bothered by your definitions of the terminology.

The issue is that paying customers who have bought (not invested, not donated but bought) early access are now being delayed behind people paying a subscription.

It's just another cash grab.

No no no! E:D has been in development for 76 years. SC only for three weeks so don't be so damn impatient.

But seriously, you guys need to stop automatically dismiss everything Derek Smart says because of who said it. Yes, his games are bad. Yes he is very opinionated, he never worked in a great team where he could learn from his colleagues. But some (not all!) of his observations are valid.

Dismissing everything cuz "lol DS" is worse than anything he put out.

Except maybe for 2.4, which does not look like the substantial update SC needs.

Also the fans need to shut up talking about persistance as if it's the lord and saviour. It's a basic functionality, with SC only having a basic implementation thereof at last.

Actually Braben found a stone table with the ED code, SC just started development, because they had to build the company first. (hire, fire, hire, layoff, hire.. .. ..)

the PTU being the actual bloody Alpha...
The PTU is a temporary testing release environment, and look at it, it's exactly that! :|

So Star Citizen only has 5000 people out of 1,300,000 people that actively play, is that what you're saying?

:D

1 Million, 300,000 people that actively play? Oh you just shot your foot with that remark. :p

It's impossible to count this, but with all certain, there isn't 5000 people active bug-reporting on the Issue Council or even provide feedback when we're talking about the PTU releases. The big majority, wants just to play something as early as possible.

Alpha is hardly permanent in nature...
You're arguing semantics and it's not going to float I am afraid.

Yeah, the $114,000,000 they have collected isn't enough...

I watched a film about that recently, it was called 'Risen' iirc. Some Roman tribune witnessed Braben designing Elite and setting out plans for the Raspberry Pi as well as ensuring that Ian Bell's ancestors came together at the specified time. Very enlightening.

Classic citizenese! The PTU - Public Test Universe (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/faq/faq-ptu) is called Public but it isn't really public until the last stage. :D

I believe the classic non citizen response is - it's so public it's actually private.

Yeah that is the Cobra Engine. You know, like the CryEngine which had been in development for many years prior. Your point?

Only that I hadn't seen it before and it was being used for rebuttal. It's all semantics anyway!

Seriously, the PTU is that temporary testing environment, It's like a RC, release candidate build, being tested upon to be released on the main branch, that branch would be the Alpha.

You like or not, the PTU is not the Alpha Access.

You are arguing about the name, yet the FAQ describes the process to access it. Oh Dear :p

I think your interpretation of the english language just headshotted you there mate :)

SERIOUSLY, are we all playing ingenuous just for the sake of baiting now? It's well known the Citizen number is just registered accounts, that includes ALL the people that ever registered one account to try out a free flight event. A big slice of that number, if not most of it, are not actual backers who bought the game.

But yeah there is a BIG majority of people who want to play the game, there is a minority that actually provides the feedback, bug-reporting, and so on, that is the point of PTU, i'd say you can fit those people into a 5K box. ;)

Maybe they should call it what it is then - if it isn't public don't call it public - otherwise guess what? People might get confused or feel deceived.

Like alpha access is generally perceived as when it goes to non CIG staff for the first time.

Not the super secret selected Avocado club - other randoms - and now subscribers - yay!

As it's quoted: "This environment will be publicly available to players, but under our tight access control."

I think that's where Public comes from, not public as "all can get in".

But it's not ingenuous when CIG advertises that number right? :)

Now don't let me keep you from the argument that alpha alpha isn't alpha but alpha is.

And they can, they 1.3 Million Citizens, being all you need to be one Citizen, one Account.

On the 2nd, let me quote: "The PTU is a replica environment of all servers needed to operate the game and the platform. This environment exists to allow public testing phases of unreleased patches of the game and platform."

"Unreleased Patches" << Alpha Access was access to the Alpha Release, the PTU is testing of something un-released, then it's not one Alpha Release is it? :pr

Look, I'm bored with this (it goes nowhere), I had already said that I don't like it but other thing that I don't like is people mixing things(as well as the others who try to attack the person and not the argument), there is already enough things to criticise without transforming every debate in a mud fight mixing things, spreading stuff that is not true and that type of stuff.

No one is required to pay anything more for the alpha access.

Apart from someone who has alpha access thinking they'd get PTU and doesn't now have the PTU - until they subscribe. Right?

Mmm true. The problem is that it had been stated on this very forum by Braben himself that nothing from the prototyping endeavours before the Kickstarter was used in the game. The debaters on reddit simply are not aware of this, even though it has been discussed to death.

Except that they are released. They're released to a small batch of people who are paying yet more money for the access.

It's an Alpha of an Alpha in other words. Semantics, look it up.

No one is required to pay anything more for the alpha access.

The fact that it's voluntary changes nothing, purchasers who have already paid for early access can't get access early unless they subscribe.

It's just another harpoon thrown from the sinking deck of the Pequod.
