oh dear.. Felicity wants me to shoot Barnacles

I remember from the stream Michael said there were more Barnacle sites yet to be found. Going to have to wait myself too for some kind explorer to report in. Existing sites are a long way to travel and with no pills left for the madness I am afraid of what the writing on the hull walls will say this time

That would be quite a shocker. You would have to find it.

I suspect Liqua is right - it might be some missions will have it as reward. Barnacles have changed, and I guess people have to find new ones too.
I saw meta alloys at wreak sites.

Of course the simple thing to do is; find a commander with his nice new 'upgraded ship' and kill him and then search the wreak. No? Ok, I'm done.

Maybe I should have spend less time playing with the new multi-cannons and tried the engineers myself?

This is too funny. All through the beta we were telling FD that finding the materials they were listing was going to be a horrendous chore, even more so for the casual players. They seemed to relent and agree that some pointers would be included in material descriptions to assist.

Now they want us to find a relic that's disappeared from the game and look for probably the rarest material in the game to even get started on the Engy pathway?? Too funny. Much

All it serves to do is frustrate people to the point that they will just leave the game and wait until the Cannon group figure it out. Maybe a month would do it.

Exactly right. As first thing I flew out to a newly found Barnacle. It had 3 skimmer guards, which was weird to begin with. And it didn't drop meta alloys in 3 respawns. Logged out. Will lurk forums to see if bug or feature or what.

It gets rid of all the dross. FD understands that a real Elite player; enjoys the challenge.

I just did the same.

Sources aren't limited. Obviously FD wanted to change ways you get meta alloys. If people will be stuck FD will give some hints out there. That's how they did in previous cases. As I said, I don't care that much to argue for or against such method, but I must admit that it is a bit of challenge. Clever minds most likely will figure this out in few days time. Heck, I even would want to do it myself, but have no time for that atm.

I'm still trying to figure out why FD decided to take this route. It looks like the whole process of getting these meta alloys is more and more a bug. A commander reported finding MA in the barnacle thread, but the dropped MA did not register correctly for quest update.

Yeah. If that's so, please report it to FD support so they can give us some answer. It seems MA is harder to get in 2.1, and if they are outright bugged, then it is a bit disappointing.

edit: did drop question to Twitter account of Frontier support, however it still seems intentional to me.

I'm cool with the idea of finding rare items. But with no hint as to where to look ... well, it's a REALLY BIG galaxy :/

This compared to another engi who just wants a few bounty kills. Mind you, what Farseer is offering, thrusters and FSD, is HUGE compared to the others. So maybe she's designed to be this challenging. Still ..

There are much better ways to handle it rather than turning it into another potential "Elite Dangerous 1 week ARG to discover where the new tourist attraction site is based on increasingly pointed clues from Frontier".

For example 2.1 added in data collection that you can gather from scanning a wide range of objects and acts as a consumable material for crafting/modification purposes. If Frontier wanted to have some engineers with steeper initial task requirements tied to exploration they could have introduced new space or planetary POIs that only spawn outside of the populated bubble of unusual objects (natural objects) that when scanned give special data that can't be obtained from any other means. Then have those chosen Engineers require said data as a sign that the pilot in question has explored further afield and has come back with interesting data that can be used for creative purposes.

Turning said Engineers into a short-lived "Meta-alloy/artifact easter egg hunt" until people figure out the undocumented changes and then everyone just goes back to what they were doing pre-2.1 and farming those areas removing any resemblance of actual exploration to acquire new information is entirely the wrong way to go about it.

Keep Meta-alloys and the like where they belong, as some drawn out story arc device. Not as some poor-mans representation fo non-exploration to substitute for not actually introducing more aspects into exploration itself.

If they want Engineers tied to scientific research data sourced from explorers, then add scientific research data sourced from explorers that they come across from ACTUALLY exploring out there in uncivilised voids.

I entirely agree with this.

Well the Farseer really only deals with FSD and Engines, which understandably some combat pilots want to get a hold of quick. But for the mean time I would think going after weapons other internals will be just fine while everyone figures out this meta alloys stuff and other requirements. Plus you don't need to donate to get the enhanced thrusters. She just sells those in outfitting.

The Dweller deals with lasers and power distributor and all he wants is cash to start up (granted, it's 500k). He's where i'll be spendin time and resources

The description for Meta Alloys hasn't changed, it still says they come from the 'Large Barnacles' which makes me think that this is probably a bug. I got cobalt and uraninite from the Barnacle I spent time with today.
