oh dear.. Felicity wants me to shoot Barnacles

This. Hunting for the stuff. Searching for it. That's a fine idea when you can be sure that it's not simply broken; which we cannot.

Care to elaborate please? Empty as in permanently exhausted? Empty as in "over-fished"? And what to do when all of them are empty?

It depends on their harvested state, if they've been harvested then no meta-alloys are available, they will regrow over time. Scumming won't work with the empty ones either.

Steps for a casual player / non masochist:

1. Download 2.1 update
2. Get in game and fly to an engineer
3. See that it requires something you've never heard of
4. See that there is no description or hint as to where to find it
5. See that it doesn't exist or is always in demand in commodities market
6. Quit the game
7. Play XCOM2 instead

FD, just imagine for a second, a player that has never been to the forum and never intends to. Now design the game based on that.

Michael, just last question - people said that healthy Barnacles when shot produced other metals, but not meta alloys. It is by design?

This.
This update is an absolute joke. All the good work they do and they      it up with this nonsense

Heaven forbid an explorer wants exploration data

So. Lemme get this straight...

I can fully understand the logic behind "they can be emptied".

But there will be thousands of players needing Meta Alloys. ANd a seemingly limited supply of them.

Question: If a Barnacle at one location is farmed, then that will become emptied for other players?

I'm sitting right beside an intact barnacle right now and it is budding off stuff, but not meta alloys - how long does it take to bud a meta alloy then?

More clues needed, or this will be an exercise in abject frustration.

I thought game design 101 taught that when introducing a significant new feature you make it easy for the player to get on the first rung and then move up from there. Not wall it off from the start so they think to hell with that I'll go do something else?

So what you're saying is keep looking for Barnacles and you'll eventually find them?

Sorry mate, but after having missions that were impossible to finish on the boards for the last 5 months, you're going to have to be a little more obvious.

Other than this little snag, great update so far btw. I'll be back to moan about some other stuff as it arises later, I'm sure. :)

Sources aren't limited. Obviously FD wanted to change ways you get meta alloys. If people will be stuck FD will give some hints out there. That's how they did in previous cases. As I said, I don't care that much to argue for or against such method, but I must admit that it is a bit of challenge. Clever minds most likely will figure this out in few days time. Heck, I even would want to do it myself, but have no time for that atm.

Meanwhile NPC's have access to all the mods from day one.
Sorry this doesnt cut it.

If they wanted to change how things are done, then the hint should have been there from day 1.

You can find them, actually pretty easy to find intact barnacles protected by turrets but all they drop is worthless crap now.

They never said they will signpost everything. And considering silence from FD support and acknowledgement that it is a bug, it is intentional. So start looking - or wait for someone to share.

The whole point of my post was that if you have a track record of making missions that don't work, but that it's possible to waste hours on before finding out it doesn't work, then enigmatic silence isn't really an option available to you.

Ah well, the enigmatic silence has been thoroughly broken now, and everyone knows what the score is. Go go gadget barnacle hunt!
