The Star Citizen Thread v 4

The only reason they would be testing such a thing is if they had a plan to implement it.

As someone who works on software as part of my job, I'll disagree with this. It's what we'd call a stop-gap implementation.

Besides, they're testing the purchasing system, and they have to have an ongoing cash sink of some type or everyone would just end up with so much money that they'd stop using the purchasing mechanics.

I know you're trying to bait me, but I'll answer honestly.

The falling through the floor is related to legacy CryEngine netcode that doesn't play nice with the local grid system that CIG has developed to keep all the things inside of a ship.

That netcode is apparently going through a rework to incorporate the new Item System 2.0 that is on the Star Citizen Alpha PTU which is supposed to allow better handling of object positions and states in the game environment.

Don't you think maybe they should have taken care of that quite some time ago?

Actual serious question! Any idea if this something that needs to be done for SQ42? Could they bypass it by having only flying missions in the first episode?

Quite a lot of misinformation in this thread.

2.4, which is the upcoming patch and currently tested is indeed there to bring persistence. This is an important change to Star Citizen and quite complex and far reaching in it's consequences. Basically on the live server all information are stored locally, think about hangar configuration, ship loadout, or reset with each session, like Crusader universe. The upcoming change means that this information is stored server side and kept between sessions. To test this a currency that exists only for testing was brought into game. Think about credits you can earn and spend in Elite Dangerous. They exist only within the server environment and have no real monetary value. Also this currency is about to get wiped and reset at regular intervals.
I think the problem is, "persistence" sounds quite complicated and brings up the images of being able to leave a ship somewhere in space and to return to it few hours later and so on, while it's mainly saving the character state, which should be done far, far earlier in the development timeline. It sounds important, but I think the more fitting word is 'basic'. To compare it to ED, persistence offered by 2.4 is related to cash balance, rank, inventory and current ship loadout. The more impressive part of persistence would be comparable to ED's background simulation (markets and factions). I seem to remember some promises of realistic industrial simulation (mining of materials, which are then processed and used to build ships) and multitude of NPCs with their own lives. Now that would be impressive.

Vaulting is promised. It didn't make it into 2.2 because the player base demanded the physicalized EVA be fixed.

Further work on vaulting is documented in the most recent monthly studio report under the Foundry 42 UK section:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15285-Monthly-Studio-Report

Next question Dr. Dr. Smart? Keep in mind that you cannot ban me here for proving you wrong.

You proved me wrong how? Please explain. I'll wait. Right here.

How could they, when the Item System 2.0 wasn't developed yet?

Once again - that is simply a failure of leadership.

"I know lads, lets go off on a long weekend car trip! There'll be heaps of fun! All we need is a bit of cash for fuel and the rest will take care of itself!"

"Yay - let's go!"

"Yup dudes - we doin' it!"

"Urm, do we actually have a car? And none of us are licensed to drive :("

Actually it has been proven over and over again in this thread that the studio reports don't mean anything. Just look at all the Star Marine studio posts and what came from any of that, there are a bunch of other instances as well, AI work as another example.

And procedurally generated birds. and fish. oh, and terrain. :D

If I had the faintest idea what Item system 2.0 was I could probably answer that question.

Are you deliberately trying to expose my complete and comprehensive lack of knowledge of both SC and game development in general?

Coz if you are - that's just like totally not fair.

I simply find it amazing that so many people continue to focus on one individual and their activities on the internet, rather than discuss what is actually happening (or not) with the actual game in question.

I personally have nothing against the SC devs and I can really appreciate the amount of work that they have done. And re-done. And done again. And outsourced. And then re-done in-house. And then abandoned.

None of that is their fault. It is directly, and absolutely, the fault of leadership.

There is nothing amazing about it. They have no plausible way of defending this train wreck. So attacking dissenters is the plan. This despite the fact that a) it has no effect b) it continues to cast them in a poor light c) Star Citizen is still crap.

That's it, that video Cut the Poppy! That video puts it nice and clean across the board! Says it all actually!
That video is the summary of this charade, envy, bitterness, fear of the ambition.

That video is epic, must watch for everyone!

Indeed. It sums up why certain individuals attack the backers of Star Citizen relentlessly.

Perhaps it is the revival of the space game that really upsets them. Braben and Roberts were both extremely successful. As a matter of fact it showed a broader audience that there is indeed market and not only a niche for space games.

We are already seeing the result in long established franchises like Call of Duty taking their own steps into that genre. Do you really think Activision would have taken the risk without the market showing a demand?

So yes, I would like to thank both Braben and Roberts for their effort to bring back the games I loved in the 90s.

Oh and for the record. My favorite space sim of all time is Tie Fighter, with the Wing Commander series coming in a close second. Would Larry Holland decide to return to the space sim genre and release a new game in the tradition of Tie Fighter, even without the Star Wars franchise behind it, I would not hesitate to back it.

At this stage I'm not sure "impressive" would cover the scope of CR's claims in regard to what he would have liked to include.

maybe its because the backers are nothing but cultists part the most toxic community i have ever had a misfortune to be part of in MY ENTIRE LIFE

and people DESERVE to know the scam they are getting involved with so they can avoid it!

My kudos goes to the @Lesabre the man who still keep up fighting it hard on the SC forum just with the power of his words even if he was been surrounded by multiple x"bloodthristy" "cult members............

Few quotes from this "brave" man(I almost dare to said a hero):

"How many games do you know that take a dedicated fps engine and mess up the fps part so bad it's like going back 15 years and playing ancient fps games? Please tell me so I can laugh at them instead."

"People like me are here to kick CIG up the ass when they go wrong, when they don't seem to be acting as good stewards with the publics money (it's still the publics money until the product is delivered, they do not own it until you own item), and to occasionally laugh at the odd idiot who thinks we are here to 'ruin' everything for everyone else (its a forum, what the hell could I possibly break or alter?) and to laugh at the ones that really don't seem to be playing the same PU as the rest of us, you know those, the "omg this is so impressive!! The door actually opens omg!!!1!!!11 I fell throught the floor omfg!!!1!!!11 I can fly in empty space squueee!!1!!!2 *fap/fart/feint*" like they've never played an open world game before."

"I think 10% is a very high ratio for what is there and how it's delivered, putting what is currently avalible from 2.4 in list form and then stacking it alongside the stretch goals and the other various things planned makes 2.4 look like a very small and singular step up a very long flight of stairs."

And yeah Lesabre formula of the CIG "success":

Ships:
1. Show off something new
2. Hype the thing constantly
3. Sell the thing for real money as concept
4. Delay the thing
5. Forget the thing/break the thing
6. Show off something new
7. Go to 1.

Gameplay systems:
1. Show off something new
2. Hype the thing constantly
3. Pitch the thing as "never done before" regardless of truth/accuracy of statement
4. Delay the thing
5. Forget the thing/claim it's already done
6. Forget that it's "already done" and tell people "it's coming"
7. Go to 1.

Game world:
1. Show off a big number of locations
2. Hype them up
3. Pitch them as "Incredibly detailed" and "interactive"
4. Delay them
5. Forget about them
6. Show off something new
7. Go to 1.

you guys can read more of this here:https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/330602/people-bad-mouthing-star-citizen/p1

LOL! yeah, he's amazing. I'm just shocked he's not banned yet. :D

EA would do a better wing commander than anything CR can only DREAM of... well HE ALREADY DREAMS SC and that is all we got... DREAMS.

CR only did the bad wing commander games.
