Just noticed that PCSpecialist (http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/) are now selling systems where the GTX 1080 can be chosen as the graphics card.
Running one now... all ultra at 3840x2160 and it doesn't break a sweat. Just unlocked the frame rate and vsync, sitting at rest in space it's touching 195fps!
Have it back locked at 60, vsync enabled and have actually knocked it down to 2560x1440 for now because everything is almost too sharp
Edit: at 2560x1440 unlocked it's over 220fps... (all settings max)

More and more tempted to splurge on the 1080. Its a bit more expensive than I'd expected though, id only budgeted for £500, the cheapest 1080 is around £520 right now
Really want to see what the 1070 has to offer first though, TitanX performance for 970 money sounds too good to pass up

For reference, i'm running 5760x1080 at 60fps on a gtx970 with everything on ultra except antialiasing and supersampling because of the 4GB limit. Other than that limit the 970 is a beast on its own. I really thing my setup deserves full 2x SS so i really need a card with 6gb or more. The 1080 might be overkill now but i don't want to regret buying a non-top card again (my 970 is only 6 months old)More and more tempted to splurge on the 1080. I'm currently on a 970 too, been a great card, but I'd love to be able to crank things up a notch, either running at 1920x1080 with 2x supersampling or just running at native 4k would be awesome. Not sure the 1070 will have the power to get a locked 60 at 4k though, but waiting for the benchmarks to be sure.
I never regretted choosing the 970 over the 980, i got a stable boost clock of 1627MHz with some light overclocking and it easily out performs a stock 980. This generation there seems to be a wider gap between the xx70 and xx80 series. Although I'm a little worried that if i blow £520 on a gtx1080, a few months down the road the 1080ti will launch and I'll be on a second tier card anyway.

I know 1080 has only been a for a few dyas but I wish the manufacturer cards would hurry up!!
I have a built machine here just missing a decent gpu (don't wanna go Founders).

To caveat the techies were out of office, it's just a teaser done by the one of the editors, so take that as you will.
It's the results of an SLI setup using one 1080 Founder edition and one 1080 manufacturer edition.
Check out the temps, the Founders blower vs a manufacturer cooler.
Obviously there will be factors such as air flow in the case coming into play but still, on the face of it this seems a big difference.

That is a big difference however swap those cards around and I wonder how the aftermarket cooler would do when boxed in with another card?
I guess the market for sli is not big enough but I have wondered if a mirror image design would be better/possible for sli cards so they would sit back to back and one card not be choked

To be honest i reckon the founders card will give you an identical Rift experience when you factor in ATW.
However I feel the same way, want a custom card with the hefty cooling, snazzy looks and extra OC potential.

That's a crazy markup over the retail $699USD (should =$972AUD on current exchange rates).
Hopefully prices will level out a bit over the course of the next few weeks.

My Rift is still a ways away so I'm not overly tempted... yet. If my Rift was delivered/about to be delivered, different story!

Did a bit of research last night and here's what I know.
I'm UK btw so UK related info.
I will also caveat that I have a fully built gaming machine with VR sitting here doing nothing while it waits for a GPU so I'm erring to the "not waiting too long" side of things. =p
Will also say I'm not really interested in Founders edition so ignoring those.
So eBuyer have a bunch of 1080's on there for preorder with prices, expected date is June 30th.

And it seems Overclockers UK have the Asus Strix on their site, I couldn't find any other UK suppliers, and it's £620 though.

Also, and I'm still trying to figure it all out, this Asus Strix model seem to forgo one displayport for a HDMI which seems to have been done specifically with VR in mind, say you already have a HDMI display which kinda makes sense.
I think one HDMI only might be problematic for some if adding VR, while only 2 DisplayPort might be problematic for others? Dunno.
So I phoned Overclockers and they do indeed say "according to suppliers" they are getting the Asus June 3rd (along with some KFA2 models. Other cards they expect June 17th (so not even that long really).
With Overclockers preorder they take the money right away though which really put me off given nothing re the date is guaranteed at this point. But on speaking to them they tell me I can get a refund anytime with no penalty, which I;d be tempted to do if the Asus ended up June 30th or something.
And so that date has been enough to clinch it for me so I've bitten the bullet and pre-ordered an Asus Strix. My poor bank account. [sad]
Also worth noting the Strix has extra power connecter and watt requirements over a standard 1080. Can see it on the right.
