Help with a kill pirates mission.

Ok so I got a eliminate pirates mission.
They tell me to kill 12 pirates of The Pilots Federation faction.
They tell me to search res site, nav beacons and signal sources for my targets in the LFT 926 system.

Ok but the problem is that I can't find them at all, don't get me wrong I killed like 50 pirates while looking for them but they all were from a different faction, I can't find the pirates from The Pilots Federation faction. How am I supposed to do this mission if they can't be found.

Picked up a kill 12 smugglers mission (about 750,000 cr mission) in a certain system.

So, I went to that system, poked around RES's Nav beacons, dropped into a bunch of signal sources and found nothing until I spotted an Asp (not ASP ... I mean come on ...) with a "Mission Target" red notification below its identification. I pulled it out of SC, went full guns hot on it, but it hi waked on outta there before I could complete the kill (I was flying a Mk IV Viper, so brute firepower was not on my side).

I went a-hunting again after that, but found nothing for another half hour.

I could have continued hunting in that system until I found 12, but at the rate I was going, I wouldn't have finished until midnight, assuming I was playing full-time for the rest of the day (it was 11am at the time).

So, I just abandoned the mission and went to a Hi RES, where I farmed that amount in about half an hour of pew-pew (which was great provided you fly with system security 'wingmen' btw ;) ).

NRG is failing pretty much across the board after 2.1 I'm afraid.

Oh I'm not the only one then? Had a mission to kill X pirates of Y faction, except that none of them could be found. Lots of pirates in system, but none of THAT faction. After hours and hours I managed to find just 5 (I needed 28!!!) and, of course, failed the mission :(

Thanks for the reply, guess Il abandon to, I'm tired of looking for them already, haven't found even 1 of them in 2 hours.

I took one of those missions today. I thought 5 pirates would be easy for 200k. After an hour, I couldn't find a single one from the right faction. Something is wrong. I did loads of those missions in 1.4, and never had any problems finding them.

This has happened to me as well. Enough times that I really don't play those much anymore. They did seem to fix the anaconda being redirected to outpost bug. At least hasn't happened to me since; hopefully missions keep getting fixes, and now that the new backbone is in place, I am hopeful many at least will.

Had that myself today. I found if I logged out to main menu and back in again it would spawn a couple of mission targets straight away.

Just in case someone else searches this thread:
You need to scan each and see if it says "mission target," in the scanner HUD area for the selected contact, not if they belong to a faction.

For anyone struggling with these missions, they are super easy to finish. You will need an interdictor of course to pull the targets out of SC. Fly around for a minute or so. If you don't see any targets, drop out of SC into normal space, then as soon as you can go back into SC. This will reset the instance, and there are good odds some will spawn. Wait a minute if none spawn, rinse repeat. You should get targets in fairly short order. Note they like to spawn near stations, so if the target system has a couple of stations fairly close to each other, hang out there.

I've found on the big missions ie. 72 ships or more you will have to pull 15/20 or so out of sc then on the say 20th interdiction it will start dropping pirates two at a time into instance with a bunch of system sec and you can keep killing them until the mission count is achieved.

still an issue in 2017

You need to look for them in supercruise, and interdict them - as stated above, you can find plenty of targets this way. However, mission descrition says one should look for them at nav beacon, res sites a unidentified signals - never found any this way.
also loading some (valuable?) cargo may help, as mission target may actually interdict you - my first kill tonight after about half an hour searching nav beacon/signal sources.

I had to abandon a mission like this it was in a high security system with no conflict zones.
If you carry a load of high value items. carrying some gold say 30 or more you run a high risk of been interdicted.

As someone has mentioned try signal sources, like combat ones.

I just completed one of these, and all I really had to do was hang out at "idle" in supercruise a couple hundred light seconds from the main star, looking back toward the nav beacon.
Watch the contacts panel and scan every new contact that pops up. Soon you'll see that the ships matching the mission criteria are only a couple of models. In my case, it was Vultures and Cobra MkIVs.

Carrying four cargo items that were prizes from a previous delivery mission (in my case, some nanobreakers) made me look like a tasty mark, so instead of me having to interdict them, many of them decided to turn the tables and come right for me instead.
Perfect! Submit to their interdiction, deploy weps, then make with the open season on the unwary pirate. This only almost backfired once when a generic Federal Gunship with his own Wanted tag -not one of my mission targets- decided to get in on the fun.

The only thing that saved my bacon was Onyx Sky's overkill weapons: 4 rail guns and 2 multi-barrel cannons on a tricked-out Asp Explorer. He hung there for a moment after popping out of supercruise, which was long enough for me to target his power plant, stab him a couple of times with the rail guns while the cannons did their hull shredding thing. I call it the "Bait and Twitch." [big grin]

Anyway, that's the trick I've discovered to these missions. Hang out a fair distance so you can scan everything popping into the system without having to turn to face them. It does require a little patience, but once you get into the pattern, and if you're loaded out well enough, you can interdict and pop your targets before your FSD has even completed the cooldown sequence.

You are out pirate hunting in an ASP-E? Whats your loadout as I've used the ASP-E a few times for murder purposes but always looking for other idea on how to fit it out :)

This is still an issue. Tried to do a kill 12 pirates missions and I know the tricks to get them to respawn but this is just unfun. You keep on circling in SC to find any targets and hope for the RNG god to be nice. Thats just bad design.
