Is there anyone with a GTX 1080 who can comment on what settings they're able to get with usable frame Rates? Seeing conflicting reports of the 1080 not being able to run VR high without frame rate drops which sounds like kind of a big disappointment! (I've got a 1080 preordered...)
Sadly, I don't have a GTX 1080. As for framerate drops and all those issues... Hmm
Theoretically, the 1080 is supposedly 20-25% faster than a GTX 980Ti/TITAN. (The interesting part is that NVIDIA claimed the 1080 would be twice as fast as a Titan. LOL) Problem is, it's a brand new card, drivers are hardly optimized, and it will probably be a while before the card can perform at its full potential.
If you have a Titan or 980Ti, I would advise against upgrading. Why?
Like I mentioned in a previous post, the 1080Ti still cannot maintain 4K at 60FPS. DX12 performance is just as bad as with the 900 series, so that's out the window. Anything less than 4K the 980Ti or Titan can run with flying colors, not to mention that the Titan and 980Ti have matured drivers backing them. Personally, I bought a 980Ti like two months ago (maybe should've waited) but whatever. I will wait for either the 1080Ti or better yet, the AMD Polaris (preferably Vega).
The 1080 should be a good choice for VR, since supposedly Nvidia introduced some "new" technology to improve VR performance. How effective that is, however, remains to be seen.
My own personal opinion is that any "new" technology should be given a year to mature and leave the "hype" stage. The first year is all about the hype, but after that is when you see how truly good (or horrible) it is.
The only exception being VR. I had to have one of those right NOW.
Please do refer to the main post. I am still experimenting with settings, but so far, I can run the settings in my main post with solid 90FPS. I am experimenting with all settings one by one now to see if I can determine the ones that hurt performance the most so I can let you guys know
I am not sure if it's an issue with the graphical updates, but around ring systems and ice rings, there are some FPS drops. The HTC Vive locks the FPS at 45 when there are significant drops, and it has been doing that lately. Mind you, at 45FPS it runs great too
Everywhere else, including planet surfaces it's solid.
