AI still needs a little more nerf IMO. My anaconda has had 2 "near collapse hull" and HAZ-RES are still out of bounds because of that. I'm just tailing cops in HighRES and taking potshots hoping the AI doesn't turn its attention on me. Not what I intended being in a 'Conda. the FAS/Gunships are pretty much hands-off. I dare not take them still!
Solo Mode player opinion! (braces for backlash and git gud flood)

Edit : this is pre 2.1.02 observation! Will update this once I've tried out the new AI!

As of now for pure PvE fighting 1v1 a FLD/FAS is better then a Conda (imo) - unless you carry an unholy amount of SCBs... AI is very good if it has the nimbler ship. All turret layout will mitigate that a bit - ship borne fighters will change it back again.
I am really not a top Pilot but can ( with at least 50% win quota which again is not tops but enough for me ) beat Dangerous + NPCs ( in any ship ) with my FDL.

Edit: Will refrain from further posting in this thread until I have actually played with the new changes - sorry mods :(

I agree with the last post, and FDL/FAS seems to be a better bet against the new AI. I still have to "run" 30% of the time however. Also found that fitting some turrets helps me keep the smaller faster NPC'S struggling to maintain shields!

Yeah, the FAS and Gunship, even the Dropship, are stupid tough now. Taking down the shields is no problem, getting through the pure diamond hull is another thing entirely. And I feel like the AI gets distributors that we don't get. They can keep firing seemingly forever. Not a huge complaint, since the old AI was too easy, but it does get a little frustrating sometimes. Meh, still better than the old AI. You could almost sleep through that.

The problem with 2.1 AI and the anaconda/corvette/cutter is the following :

  1. Now the AI is very much adept of avoiding your line of fire and staying on your 6.
  2. The large ships have two options : dogfight battles with gimbals, or use loads of turrets.
  3. Once engaged in a turning battle vs something smaller, faster and more agile, you can either flee or play the turning game.

Dogfighting with gimbals was OK before 2.1 because you could line up the NPC rather easily. Now ? no so much.
The turrets don't work either, because :

  1. They are confused by the absolute motion of ennemy ships. In other words : they miss the small and nimble targets that they are supposed to counter all the time.
  2. They are hard countered by chaff, which NPC's love to use.
  3. Even with their buffed DPS, they are still inefficient power hogs.

This puts large ships in a terrible position : forced to dogfight, no way to get out of the turning battle, no effective long range weapons vs small targets, no effective turrets.
So you have ships that are great at killing other large ships, but that will get murdered by 3 eagles because you cannot hit them effectively, even if packingturrets.
Missiles are usefull to deal with the small stuff, but the amo limit makes it problematic for CZ.

Why would you take a large ship, with no fighter escort, into an environment that you absolutely know will be dominated by swarms of small ships?

Didnt try the combat after this latest patch but its obvious that we are back in WW1 when the most maneuverable ship is the king. That in the year 3301 ? Even the japanese zero didnt stood a chance against B-29 in WW2

Probably worth noting in this thread, regarding the warning one might receive when being hit by weapons

It's worth pointing out that those warnings aren't exclusive to engineer mods - Some weapons have side effects innately that will also trigger the warnings. Specifically:

Retributor lasers: Thermal attack.
Plasma Accelerators: Thermal Attack (and technically increased chance to make any module they hit malfunction, though I think that's not called out).
Railguns: Impulse (small).

Though the railgun/plasma effects are far far less powerful than engineer-added versions!

yeah, both turret (especially tracking speed and accuracy. and would be 80% more chaff-resistant than gimbal version) and PD (especially fire rate and ammo clip. for say 30% and 300% boost, respectively ?)need buff.

For me it's the same - lowest ranks fly beautifully, but have stock outfitting and don't survive long (but will give newbies something to fight). Medium ranks are doable with ease if security ships are around. Higher ranks - I ran. I met two Deadly Anacondas, which got my hull down to 40% in 5 seconds. Thankfully I was in my Cobra.

edit: also just fought Expert DBS with rockets and nice hull upgrades. Used pips at full extent, survived me and two System Security ships enough to jump out with 40%. So do your math.

AI seems to be fine. I watched my son play and he was doing just fine in high res. He said that a few of the npc's was fighting really good though there were cop's present. One npc gunship did not fire a single shot during fight but it was just one case.

FD should not nerf the AI if someone says I went to haz res and got my butt kicked. Haz res places are for very skilled pilots or for wings.

Are USS and interdiction spawns of a similar combat rank?

According to changelog similar combat ranks will be spawned for missions and USS. Interdictions are done by NPCs spawned in supercruise and thus visible to everybody. Thus interdiction more likely can have higher rankings.

The higher ranked NPCs are not worth fighting against in anything that is not combat ship with a high pitch rate and good maneuvering thrusters.

It's just a boring strafing and backward flying game. Waiting until the security comes and then collecting the microstuff.
For me the new AI is worse from a gameplay point of view. Harder to fight, sure. More fun/interesting/challenging to fight? No.
