A Guide to Minor Factions and the Background Sim

Had 3 factions in retreat state in one of our systems, didn't act against them. They stayed on ~3%, ~2% and ~1% respectively. Only the faction on 1% was removed from system when state finished. Looks like factions need to be driven down to 1% for retreat state to be successful? anyone got different results?

Hello fellow BGS acolytes,

I though I would run this one past you before I put in a bug report...

I am running smuggling missions for my Anarchy faction.

On completion of the smuggling missions, the summary says that Civil Unrest has increased for my faction who gave me the mission. Indeed, we now have Civil Unrest as a Pending state.

Pre 2.1, completing smuggling missions would cause Civil Unrest in the target system, not the originating system, which does make more sense.
It seems silly that my Anarchy faction is undermining itself by issuing smuggling jobs!

Can anyone else confirm similar observations and if this behaviour has indeed changed from pre-2.1?

Thanks in advance! :)

yes, unfortunely this stupid new missions systems works like this. I saw today in my home system 3 missions to long range delivery of Biowaste paying 3 Millions each and I thought, why not? Let's go for the easy cash.

When I delivered the Biowaste, the missions increase OUTBREAK in my home system!!!

I found a system controlled by an anarchy faction in retreat, and i want to get to cordial with them because they give well paying smuggling missions, as well as keeping them in the system. However, they dont give out missions under the rank cordial. How would i increase my reputation with them to cordial if they dont give missions?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this, but i tried researching and found nothing on this subject.

kws scanner and kill ships of the other factions in system ( u would get a small amount of kill warrant scanners for the anarchy factions)
do they control any ports or bases that arent controlled by the ruling faction - trade and turn in exploration data there instead
or pirate every other faction in system except youre anarchy faction - that will only help as much as other player activity to get their influence up

Yes, they control the only starport, and i tried trading, but after making 5mil from trading clothes (they are on the edge of the bubble) and my reputation hasn't increased, i thought i was doing something wrong. They are currently -64% in retreat, i dont know it that has to do anything. Would sitting at the nav beacon with a kws and killing every ship thats not them work? If so how long would it take, or if trading works how long would that take?

retreat is only under 5%, i would say being a multi system faction that they are in another system in which they are in retreat ( the 64% is probably their primary holdings) its the reverse of expansion, id suggest checking nearby systems for the same minor faction

you made 5 mio profit from trading clothes? or you sold clothes for 5 mio?

around 1-2 mio in profit should move your reputation.

same goes for cashing in bounties (but an anarchy faction doesn't give out bountues).

I can confirm this. I ran some missions for potentially the same faction as you Marra and received the same message, that civil unrest might be caused in the originating system not the target system.

Thank you both for confirming! :)

I've put in a bug report here if anyone has more examples to add.

every major patch they reinvent the mission system but keep it simple. What we need is for them to settle on a mission template and then add something called variety and dynamic depth to that.

i actually don't think it is a "bug". with redirection of delivery missions for exampel FDev have bound mission effects to the source system.
I don't understand why delivering goods somewhere else will increase civil unrest at the source? Particularly if that's the way they find control of their system.

Yes, pre-2.1 they increased civil unrest, decreased influence and raised your reputation with the faction you delivered them to.

My understanding is pre 2.1 they did this in the system you delivered them to - not the system they were picked up in. So dynamic bob - I do understand that they cause these but my lack of understanding is why they cause these in the system where the control faction is giving you the goods for the specific purpose of causing this in another system.

Yes, that's my understanding too and what makes me believe that the current effects from doing the smuggling missions are a bug.

i'm not talking about that making sense from a lore/realistic point of view, just poiting out the game mechanics. I'm sure somebody in this thread will come up with a good story (... something along those lines of: smuggling weapons outside of somewhere leads to network leads to people not obeying te goverment leads to civil unrest... a bit like war on drugs ;-) ).

I guess my question is, was this intended and is the new way of doing things? Will they consider changing this specific effect?(Affect? I always get those two confused) If so, sure we'll make something up story wise to account for it :)

did somebody tested it with non-mission smuggling in 2.1.?
