Elite Dangerous is Done For

Okay, so here's the facts. Frontier is losing large portions of their community by the day. Their forums aren't a place to have "discussion" anymore, it's a place for complaining.

Elite is currently a grind hell that is mind numbing boring and is just not what a game should be.

There are arriving titles like No Man's Sky, Star Citizen etc that appear they will blow them out of the water. Star Citizen is far deeper and contains much more content even in its early stages.

So what's your guys opinion, do you think Ed has a chance in the same pond as these other titles? Personally, I'm calling it an officially dead game within a litte over a year.

You're so cute.

Sure SC will be a great game... In the year 2045 when it releases. NMS? No thanks.

How about you set a reminder on your phone and come back in a year to see how we're doing. Then compare the other fish in this 'pond' and see who's here.

BTW- I plan on playing the other fish too... Even NMS.

The game HAS shown a steady drop in players with a small blip at 2.1 release back to pre 2.1 numbers now. Its funny how the usual types chime in to insult people who have a different view of the game, kinda reminds me of the orchestra on the Titanic playing away merrily while the ship does the death-roll :) Player numbers have dropped steadily, no matter how you dress it up.

Its funny how the usual types chime in to make the same doomsayer claims as the OP......yet again fail to provide anything approaching EVIDENCE to back it up.

Although you're right regarding the grinding, but Elite Dangerous is alive and will be alive and kicking in the next years.

SC is like a commercial; promising you everything with a smile but in RL delivering nothing ( and I'm a Star Citizen myself ).
SC is also a big moneyhole.

NMS is promising and yet delivering [up]

All in my humble opinion :D

Its only a "grind" if you insist on having everything YESTERDAY.

Outside of citing SteamCharts, they can't. They also seem to forget that ED on Steam was only released in Apr/'15, 4 months after ED was officially released.

Have to admit the state of the forum is starting to put me off the game.

The problem is the community has always been a part of ED, well at least for a portion of players anyway.

When you come here and read post after post after post of negative nonconstructive moaning day in day out, it stats to put you off wanting to be involved with anything that's going on, because you come here and it's just a wall of negative posts, variations of the same posts over and over again which for the most part are just condascending rants "David, David, David, Oh Dear" and similar. You think why the chuff do I bother coming here, it's NOT a nice work break or something enjoyable any more.

And that pushes into the game, the community, the forum and ED are tied together. You start to hate the form and that starts putting you off the game.

Something has happened in the last few months; new player influx perhaps? Since BETA I used to have the forums open as I played ED; long distance travels that take >2min would have me browsing the forums. Now? Urgh.
Not to be rude, but it's like the forums went from a Sunday afternoon's Bowls Club for Elderly people with tea and crumpets, to a primary school playground with everything such a place entails.

Okay, so here's the facts.

I think you are not familiar with the word "fact"?

Frontier is losing large portions of their community by the day.

I wouldn't know if that is true. If so they will return further down the line. It's that kind of a game. ED is a game for the long term.
I play tons of other games myself too. Fallout 4 ate many of my hours, so did Thief, so will Dishonored 2 and the new Deus Ex etc.
But I will always return to Elite for many years to come.

Their forums aren't a place to have "discussion" anymore, it's a place for complaining.

People discuss on here all the time.
Indeed there is a lot of whining going on, but you can ignore those threads and discuss with the many people who really care about the game.
Even many of the whiners care about the game, they just don't get that a dev might not see things their way and might make different choices.

Elite is currently a grind hell that is mind numbing boring and is just not what a game should be.

The game is in full development. Not everything is perfect, and some things will never be the way you want it because you are not the one building this game.
Same is true for me. In general though I can only say that I love this game. I really do.

There are arriving titles like No Man's Sky, Star Citizen etc that appear they will blow them out of the water.

I am interested in No Man's Sky. I think I will have fun with it for a while, but the candy colored universe of NMS will drive me mad eventually.
I also think the flight mechanic might be extremely superficial and unrealistic. The PG that generates NMS's universe is too. Planets are tiny and atmospheres are paper thin. It will be fun but it will not be able to keep me interested like ED does.
Star Citizen is a project I am not even sure about whether it will ever produce anything that looks like a game. I do not like the small, limited sector based universe (that is what makes ED so cool), I do not like the spaceships that look like jetfighters.
I intend to play SC if it ever produces something playable. But I won't hold my breath.

Star Citizen is far deeper and contains much more content even in its early stages.
What? Uh? What? I just... I don't... I ... that's just... Oh jeeeeeez.... and I really tried taking you seriously.

I played Elite in 1984 on a C64 and loved it. And I was an original backer of Elite:Dangerous on Kickstarter. I've been playing the new game for more than a year, and I have not scratched its surface. I love the detail, the beauty, the execution and the vision of this game, and I look forward to the developments to come. I love the fact that there is nothing that I, "have," to do, no mission that I, "have," to take, no place that I, "have," to visit. I can roam an accurate (!) model of the Milky Way galaxy and be astonished at what I find. I can mine an ice ring around a gas giant, hunt bounties in an HRES, or trade rare commodities across light years. My imagination has been supercharged by Braben and company, and I am truly grateful. Perhaps, the discontent that so many players are demonstrating is the result of this wide open game environment. In a game where you are completely free, perhaps it is too much like life for some people.

The vast majority, not all of the players on here moaning are the ones who don't like the game or suck at it. Very rarely do we see someone who has 3000 hours and a fleet of ships complaining or moaning. That's my view anyway I think people don't like Elite they want it to fail just to prove they aren't bad but it was infact the games fault.

Yes there's grind BUT that's the thing with modern games. I played for 3 hours last night achieved very little BUT I actually had more fun than when I'm trying very hard to earn money. I probably only made half a million credits in that 3 hours and started my first engineers blue print though I enjoyed myself and actually had a relaxing evening. I mean I work hard in the day I don't intend to stress at home gaming.

Yeah I've pretty much stopped frequenting the forums
The SC thread is entertaining and the little nuggets from the Canonn and Formidine Rift threads I find interesting.
The forums have in general turned into a moan fest.

Has yet to put me off the game for those very threads I've mentioned though
Come and join me in the hunt for barnacles in and around the California Nebula, My in game name is the same as my forum name.

I think I've seen posts like this in various forums for various pieces of software that have been wrong, time and time again.

It's exactly that, yeah forum would almost go hand in hand with playing the game.

I don't know what's changed but yes this place is becoming so negative there's little joy in visiting anymore.

It puts you in an awful position, I feel compelled to post (what I hope is) common-sense just to counter to the constant moaning, but you can only do that so long without getting utterly sick to death of the constant bickering and arguing with people.

This thread is a case in point, just read the first post. It really is just trolling in order to get a response, going now to 10 pages of arguing about what??? Whether the game is dead or not and how NMS/SC is gonna drink ED's milkshake? Then politely asking "So what's your guys opinion?".

And this seems to be the norm now, I mean seriously fer Christ's sake, is it not possible to moderate this?

Yes , one more idiot ( please get offended ) that start comparing tech demos with a game that is out ( notice I didn't say full , only out and they better continue adding to it as promised ).
Star Citizen - you have no fck idea wht it will be , the trading aspect , the exploration , combat is the one thing that is known and probably will not change dramatically in the future , everything else is words and promises by now.

No man sky - hum , cartoony graphics , the idea of landing on planet in a mater of sec , no atmosphere interaction what so ever.

So can you tell me how are you able to compare the games would ya ?!
But the other games said they will have this and this and this - that is great mate , but did not try it or ever fck see it ( or you have a crystal ball or good with taro cards ? ).

Please send Lottery numbers we will split the reward.

I Agree

This is the first game iv ever owned that had a forum and only one that iv used. and i think its sad that a forum could end a game with a small handful of negative people. id like to say that the best thread iv been involved in and watched is the UA threadnaught people come go but there is a common goal and a good group. ok sometime people chuck there toys out of the pram but that is rare. i think we all need to lighten up. imagine if your working on this game and every day you come in to a forum of wingers that's got to get old fast. and i know people will say "its my opinion" this "my opinion" that well you can still do it constructively, good or bad. cheer up people lets make thing better.

I don't doubt that NMS And SC might steal a few elite customers

On the other hand. They might also make space sims a "thing", make the Genre more fashionable and UP users.

Who knows?

Nothing lasts forever.

Elite does have lot of problems, at least for some of us used to sandbox games, but as other posters pointed out, OP should contain some facts to support his claims. Otherwise, it can't be taken seriously. Especially not when he mentions Star Citizen which, by the looks of it, is pretty much dead in the water.

Star Citizen will be a very very tough Contrahent. Especially because announced that Players can basicly own anything from Capital Ships to Star Ports.

But ED being dead or dying is unlikely.
If they contibue the Combat between Fighters Focus they are going to lose alot of Players. But they wont die from it.

The sky is falling! Again...

I'm looking forward to No Mans Sky. But if you think Elite is a grind-fest NMS will surprise you. So far it looks very similar to Elite but with even less variation and less gameplay. Not surprising since it's developed by a small team that has no resources to custom design anything.

SC looks interesting too. But 'far deeper' and 'much more content' ... seriously? Have you even played the alpha's? They are just starting to get a persistent universe. Other than that there is nothing I would call a game there yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they release their campaign Squadron 42 somewhere in 2018 and I'll probably play that to completion. And then return to Elite. Their persistent universe is a long way off. I predict an incomplete and buggy release somewhere in 2019. They'll have some stuff that's missing in Elite and FDev will quickly add that and then it will take them a couple of years to get where Elite is now.

<shrugs> and gets back to playing Elite. I have black holes to discover, asteroids to mine and bounties to hunt.

Steam charts you say... Frontier can see the exact number of current players at anytime and I don't hear the sound of Mr Braben grinding his teeth yet.

But maybe your right... Just in case here is a public information film for us all.
