Oh my... (Rift first impressions)

Rift arrived earlier today. I've never tried any of the DKs, so CV1 was my first experience with VR. I did a few tech demos and got a feel for the rift, but nothing prepared me for jumping into my Asp for the first time with the rift.

I think my first words were "Oh my **g god" followed by a minute or two of mouth-agape gazing around. I looked above me, the cockpit roof was far above my head. I looked over my shoulder, beyond the cockpit glass, the huge chunky superstructure of the Asp was visible.

"It's so **g big!" I said out loud. I had no idea my ship was so big!

I looked at my arms on the controlsand got a weird tingle down my own. Those are my arms! I thought as my mouth hung open. I looked down at my feet, and then beyond them where the cockpit floor windows showed nothing but empty space.

I spent another few minutes just sitting in space, gazing in awe around the cockpit. If I never play anything else but ED on the rift, it will still have been worth every penny!

Absolutely incredible.

EDIT: I did the sidewinder combat tutorial just to get a feel for the Rift. I went to look around and see what was behind my pilot's chair, and headbutted an empty coffee cup that wasn't in my cockpit! Hahaha!

My wife can't understand it.

She thinks I've regressed back to childhood.

I keep saying to her, 'no, you don't understand', 'come and see', but, she won't.

She has no idea what she is missing.

Great post. Really nice to feel the enthusiasm of another player - there is a tremendous amount of negativity about this board.

Having tried a DK2 at the Elite Meet a couple of months ago it's an awesome experience. Suddenly the game feels massive, the scale is truly awesome. Very jealous of you!

Show her the INVASION cartoon 360° movie. After that it's all over...

I hear you! I'm still using dk2, but nevertheless still after using developement kits for years, it takes my breath away every time. I start Elite and put on my goggles... and I'm sitting there, inside my own SPACE SHIP. A space ship! Young me would be so jealous, if he only could see the future of gaming!

I installed Lucky's Tale just for something to play, and I had to force myself to stop playing it. It's sooo fun :D.

But nothing comes close in the "oh wow!" stakes as ED in the rift!

Envy-rep for you!

I remember when my DK2 first arrived and the first time VR experience with ED was magical, but to loose your VR virginity in a CV1 that must be something else

My CV1 is due end of this month, I've packed my DK2 away in the hope the ED bar will raise even higher when i jump back into the Rift

Well I just got my first rift-related motion sickness :p.

I think it's a combination of running the Rift on a substandard card (770 instead of the recommended 970 or 980Ti), being new to the Rift, and diving straight into a head turning barrel rolling loop the looping pinwheeling cartwheeling dogfighting match of EVE Valkyrie.

I'm gonna get a new graphics card anyway so I'm not unduly concerned :).

I'm still using my dk2 while waiting for the 'email of shipment notification'. I got the order processed one last night.

Don't know how you could pack the dk2 away, assuming your still playing ED, as I refuse to go back to a monitor again.

It'll pass and you'll get used to it, as I'm sure you know. But, congrats on getting the cv1 and seeing what many of us have been enjoying.

Oh, and wait until your mind tricks you while your ship is overheating. I still feel like I should be smelling smoke.

It's incredible isn't it! Only snag is it kills ever playing Ed on a monitor again imo

Also try lost I won't spoil the ending but it is quite something

Well, now I've got the Rift working, my next unfortunate task is to get the galaxy map working with the rift.
I've jumped two systems in the last two hours. It's driving me batpoop insane!

Make sure you have the grid on, that got me for a little bit too back when my DK2 first arrived.

You have to have the grid on to get the little cursor.

If you're new to VR, make sure you spend some time just futzing around the galaxy map, too. I sometimes open Elite just to around with the map and "look at things."

You have to map your galaxy map controls to your HOTAS. I use the same controls of my ship to control the galaxy map camera. Forward and back on the stick control the pitch of the camera, rudder pedals rotate the camera. My forward thrust and reverse thrust buttons move the camera forward and back and my up/down thrust move the camera up and down. I also have a wheel on my throttle that I use to zoom in and out of. With practice and time you will be just as fast as you were using the mouse. Hope this helps.
