UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

Hi all. Just recently back into the bubble after about 5 months out in deep, DEEP space and had only ever been peripherally browsing all this stuff about the barnacles, etc. So, after getting back, I figured I might as well finally go see one for myself, and popped in on Merope 5C. Drove around it, flew around it, took lots of pics... a great time was had by all. (I just hope that when our new alien overlords come, that they bear in mind that I was one of the few who DIDN'T shoot the thing while it was defenseless... :-D ) Anyway, I'm sure it's all been theorized and hypothesized to death by this point, but I couldn't help thinking that the barnacle looked kind of like a ... seed pod growing in the middle of, and protected by... or nourished by... the spikes.

And the fact that lately they seem to be found "destroyed" more often than not makes me wonder if it's not that they're being "destroyed" so much as....

...hatching.

And if so, where have they gone? And what will they become once they're grown up?

As others have mentioned, a nebula is rich in materials... and would be a great place for something spaceworthy to "grow".

Sorry, this whole thing is SO fascinating I just had to say kudos to all who've been investigating and figuring all this stuff out with the barnacles and UAs and whatnot. o7

It came with the beta. I think it's rather nice.

I would also like to add that I think the rumour of the lores demise is greatly exaggerated.

What we have is probably FD asking Drew not to operate a a semi-official lore interpreter. His guides, particulary regarding Thargoids, Raxxla and Hyper space technology, did contain quite a bit of exstrapolation and assumption based on single mention in books or journals. Drew was completly honest about this.

The continity, so far in ED has been rather good (accuracy of lore systems ont included:D).

Lots of threads quoted in one here, so apologies if it seems messy...
Silly thought: FD should make an Unknown Artifact bobblehead - always pointing at Merope. Wouldn't that be cool and practical? Your very own UA compass! :)
Frontier! Make this happen! :)

so does nobody have anything to say about the unknown fragment left behind from an exploding unknown artifact?
You get 1 or 2 Unknown Fragments from an Unknown Artefact when it is destroyed or expires. They show up as a 5 petal (very very rare) engineer material. Palin wants 25 of them just to say hello.

A little off topic but today's astronomy picture of the day is the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888). A very nice pic people here might enjoy.
The Crescent Nebula is a bit special for me in ED as that was the first "proper" nebula that I went to back in January 3301. It still raises a smile even when I see it in an astronomical setting like APOD.

I went to both barnacles on Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 2 now, and they are all destroyed? I was there a week or two ago and they were ok? whats going on?
Is there an up to date list of intact barnacles? Or is it too early since the changes?
Sorry to butt in the conversation here, but I went out to Pleiades to harvest some MA, using this reference: http://canonn.science/2016/05/29/barnacle-status-update-29-may-3302/

The first two barnacles on the "Intact Barnacles with NO defences" section were in fact broken spires. I took screenies, but I'm not home to post them.

I ran out of time to check further down the list,

What am I missing? - I just want barnacles without defenses to harvest up a few for Felicity, and to sell rather than buy them.

Are these barnacle sites changing all the time now or what?
I'll answer these 3 at the same time. YES, Barnacle state has changed since that post went up on the Canonn site. Early Wednesday night/Thursday morning it was still accurate. Later on Thursday morning, the Barnacles changed and the list was no longer correct. The only server change at the time was the regular PP server update on Thursday mornings. The suspicion is that the Barnacle states were updated at that time.
I'm currently compiling a list of the current status (as of this week) and it's looking like MOST Barnacles have flipped from Destroyed to Live, Or Live to Destroyed. Some destroyed ones have stayed destroyed, and I've not come across an intact Barnacle that is still intact but I haven't finished checking all the logged locations yet.
It's a big task, and while it's great to get a few folks chipping in with an update about a given location, it's a lot for 1 or 2 people to do on their own. If it's going to have to be done weekly then I'll have to outsource it. I can't keep on doing that.

Hey... ur guys? I umm... the UA is making noises Im 90% sure it was not before. And Im pretty sure its not point to merope. from what i can see anyway... here is a video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO1uiWmET0k&feature=youtu.be
Your video clearly shows the UA pointing straight at Merope.
The audio doesn't sound particularly unusual. The sounds that you're referring to sound louder when you're a couple of hundred metres away from the UA.

Hi guys, I've been busy scanning systems in the Cali Neb, yet to find anything concrete relating to more barnacles or UA's yet, but I did find an ammonia world and a water world with life orbiting it's M type star deep in the heart of the nebula, not sure if this is related with anything to do with the barnacles or UA's though.

It's the only system in the Cali neb that has terrestrial based life that I've found so far.

I get excited about Ammonia Worlds! Almost as much as ELWs and terraform candidate Water Worlds. Unfortunately the flavour text for Ammonia Worlds is generic about terrestrial carbon based life. Much like life-bearing gas giants.
I feel bad to pop your balloon with that. But kudos on finding an Ammonia World. Be sure to go behind it and see a BLUE sunset and sunrise. ELWs have red sunsets and sunrises.

How do you get in with Palin?
From the Canonn Discord...

Labours of Palin
1) Say hello to Elvira with Soontill Relics.
2) Get rep with Elvira.
3) Get invite to Qwent.
4) Get Sirius permit.
5) Get 25 Modular Terminals to say hello to Qwent.
6) Get rep with Qwent
7) Get Palin invitation.
8) Get 25 Unknown Fragments to say hello to Palin

Another thing I noticed. Barnies are kind of easier to find. I tried to spot them at first glance doing a full speed fly by over the coords at 2km and I clearly saw them shining. Earlier I had to search for them even though I knew exact location. Probably some graphical changes in 2.1.

I was testing this for one entire day, what you can see up to 2km is the barnacles reflecting light. A barnacle in the dark can oly be spotted from 500mts, 800mts if you are stopped.

What? I don't see how that is significant to the brief moment that is the history of humanity.

Speaking of that, have you seen this? http://www.drewwagar.com/elite-dangerous-saga/elite-dangerous-lore/

This makes me a bit sad in a way. if we have no old lore now. Will FD give us some? i feel like the whole nostalgia thing was really keeping me going in the game, in the search for the you knows. but with out the time line or anything to go on i feel a bit lost. (i know that sounds really odd)
FD don't communicate that well will they give us something to follow as good as the old time line? why get rid of it its so rich.

I remember when the first barnacle was discovered, FD expressed some surprise that it was the barnacle it was, as that was one of the "more difficult" ones to find, or words to that effect. It seems like none of the subsequent barnacles have been any easier to find. I have a feeling that we're still missing a major component of the barnacle mystery that we were expected to have uncovered a long time ago.

I disagree CMDR Corlas.
Some of the subsequent Barnacles have been very easy to find by comparison to the original one.
It's probably because there were clues to finding a downed Anaconda in a system near the Pleiades, and a number of Barnacles within a few km of that Anaconda's location.
Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 1 / 20.8738, 91.7038

If you narrow your search to planets that fit some broad parameters, you should eventually find a Barnacle.
Frenjo summarises these characteristics into a single page document:

Ya I saw this ... was there some statement from FD that set this off? It sounds like he is saying that when we meet the Thargoids it will be for the "first" time in this game ... so the old thargoid war never happened? hmmmm ya would be a shame ... there is alot of good story to draw on and continue with instead of going back and redoing things. Hate the Hollywood remake fetish. Was there a livestream or something where someone from FD said this is how things are going?

Utopian Enforcer Exploratory Mission Update:

A number of Utopian Enforcers have embarked on a journey to scan the Rosette and Seagull nebulas. I have also decided to visit the jellyfish and monkey head nebulas before re-joining my fellow cmdr's at Rosette.

Absolutely nothing interesting was found. Here are some pretty pictures.

And a couple pictures from when i was in Barnard's Loop last week.

Would be nice to see what they said exactly. That could have been a hint not listed in this thread.

Has anyone made it all the way up with Palin yet? I wonder if he has some more hints to give us.

Yeah it'd be interesting if he did. Also might be worth checking the local news where he is.

Also here.

Interestingly he's probably found one of the more difficult ones to find :)

And thus started the seemingly false lead to an intrinsic UA <-> Barnacle connection.

Was in Merope tonight attempting to join the CNE landing party, but meh instancing. Checked out the USS's on the way to no avail - what to do?

Ungh, I need the Sirius permit? That's annoying...

Not sure why you're stressing over Palin so much. His best upgrade is for normal thrusters and he doesn't sell special cargo crates that can hold UA's. At least not until next patch it would seem.

Really? No non-corrosive cargo rack yet? any source?
