UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Many many nebulae have been searched for months. That doesn't mean there's no point in doing it again, of course (I suspect Cali's Barnacles weren't there before 2.1) but what it does mean is that most of these 'new' angles had already been considered - openly, I might add - here.

That's not to say there's no point in putting forward suggestions of places to go and survey - just that what you see with this thread is what you get :)

Barnacle Status Update [13-June-3302]

Everything changed last Thursday morning with the discovery that some Barnacles that had previously been intact were now broken. Others that were broken were now intact, some with added defences. This unprecedented change caught most people off guard.

Since then, Cmdrs Chopper, Vaeleden, RedWizzard, myself and a few others have tried to visit each logged Barnacle location to determine it’s status since last Thursday. We’ve got most of the results summarise into our Barnacle Location sheet.

The main changes are:
  • 20 out of 53 locations are now intact. This represents nearly 40% of all known Barnacles.
  • 13 are intact with no defences and 7 have some sort of defence.
  • 2 of the defended locations have 6 skimmers and a Goliath guarding them. This increase in firepower is disturbing.
  • The number of spikes has changed at many locations. Many are reduced to 12 spikes, while 7 Barnacles have the full 17 spikes.
  • Barnacles are still not giving out meta-alloys. They have been known to give out Rutile, Cobalt, Uranite, Silver and Gold.

Refer to the “Intact Barnacles” tab of the sheet for the list that’s up to date as of now, 01:00 IGT 13-Jun-3302.

Salutations!
Today during my first exploration expedition I found an Unknown Artefact but didn't have a way to bring it back to the bubble. In an effort to contribute to the cause, I've uploaded some 4K audio/video of the thing I'm hoping somebody at the Canonn will find useful for analysis. (As of this writing, YouTube's still processing, so quality may suffer until it finishes) You'll ignore my poor flying in debug cam mode, I hope.

If anyone wants to come on a trip feel free to join me. Cough cough... Ilo... cough cough.

man, I face the risk of start going to Orion tomorrow and end up in Sag a* the day after.. what a thrill!!

I'd like to, but I'm more into UAs than barnies so it is not that appealing. somethings require multiple tests and can't be done in 2h I'm affraid, and in my case I can't conclude anything yet even if I'm trying day after day :(

Good work dude. you can have a eton mess.

Right if i was sending a probe i would probably want to find out who was attacking me picking up my unknown artifacts and dumping them on planets black holes. also steeling them and taking them to federation space.

so thats it then id send my probes to the people who were steeling stuff from me. Fed stations even maybe the engineer bases. im going to look for probes in inhabited space.

In case you wanted to know. I search through Sol. I even interdicted a couple of transporters leaving the permit only moon. No probes. I looked at several I mean like 10 USSs and nothing either.

RE: Those tipoffs, I've got them on the slow-burner, collecting them as players discover them. Planning to go out in my asp and sweep them all up myself.

I have doubts the "encryption key" mentioned in several is necessary, since:
- When I received it the first time, I then found one of the same type at a random POI, which stacked onto it.
- Nothing got consumed when I scanned the core.

Kill that idea. I just scanned a wreck and got a "data encrypted" message, and only around 100k. Wait til you get the tip off messages. This is interesting....

Update from Lave ... I have finally become Allied with the Lave Defense Party ... which (according to galnet) was formerly the Phoenix Brigade ... and since they have holdings on Lave II ... i was really hoping to get a permit ... but no luck
still working on the Lave Fortune Party ...

Side note .. I keep being given all these random things to use with engineers ... we are really going to need a way to store things ... my hold is getting filled up with stuff ... i dont have room for cargo :)

check the local news in lave, I recall one big party responsible for terraforming lave2, I assume they may give the permit.

I did a second test by pulling up, i.e travelling above the ecliptic, and the UA still pointed to the star when dropped there, see my second post for the screenshot.

But I am willing to be part of a larger experiment with multiple ships and UAs. How do we coordinate that best? I do not have the CRCR and no hope of an invitation to Palin to buy some, so I prefer to not carry an UA for longer than necessary.

i wouldn't worry about it. The potential question was whether the pointing was no longer accurate from the shell, rather than in-system, but I think you've demonstrated that they do still point to Merope. Now the difficulty is to find out why.

I use to have always 2 with me (don't have Palin's cargo racks yet) and even doing smuggling from Maia with them onboard, it is not that hard but the repairs are expensive. they are well paid tho muehehehe

Spontaneously exploding spikes (SES) could be interesting ... Maybe explains why the 'state' of the barnacle sites are flipping *IF* it isn't a bug

Udo maybe you could report it as a bug to try to rule that out?

I may be imagining it, but I vaguely seem to recollect someone (maybe MB) in the 2.1 livestream mentioning a timer in relation to the barnacles . Perhaps this represents the ripening process & when ripe the MA pods drop?
Or I could just be imagining it- early morning, must have coffee!!!

Guys I believe that I have cracked the meaning of the symbol on the barnacles. This may have been suggested before or not.

I also have a feeling that among us there are people who are keeping things to themselves. Kind of selfish if you ask me. We all take credit together for participating in this endeavor.

I am accusing those who went looking in California Nebula primarily. I now know the reason you went there and I will explain.

The symbol on the Barnacles is depicting what appears as a nebula of it's origin.
But it is not.

It is depicting three distinct nebula, the nebulae that correlate to it's origin. We will start with the first one where the barnacles were found. Use the links to see the images of these nebula as they appear in real life.

Plaiedes Nebula:

This nebula is depicted in the symbol as a single circular nebula.

The second nebula which had barnacles discovered in it is the California Nebula.
http://bf-astro.com/images/ngc1499big.jpg

This nebula is depicted as a single streak or line type shape on the symbol.

And finally, the symbol shows you the Bernards Loop, and perhaps the Orion nebula or the surrounding area there in the galaxy map.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...rWilson.jpg/220px-BarnardLoopHunterWilson.jpg

I am willing to bet that Orion or the Bernards loop contains a large blue star where barnacles can be found, or multiple systems where they can be found.

I propose that this is the meaning of this symbol and that it has been known by those who first went to look in the california Nebula. They saw right away that this symbol represents three different Nebula.
This is the hint Michael Brooks gave us:

Q:Now that one has been found, can you be a little more candid with your responses?
What other nebulae are they found in? And is Lagoon nebula one of those nebulae?

“I'm afraid not - the nebula(e) that they can be found in relates to their origin and I can't talk about that.”

Michael

So what can you do to help me out? Help me Search the Orion Nebula and the other surrounding Nebula and Barnards loop. Look for a large blue star.
If you are near the California nebula. Look for a large blue star system nearby called: Menkib (xi Persei). That is what it is called by the scientific community and I am not sure how it will be called in the game.

Additional comment: This symbol and the barnacles should be treated differently than the UAs. The UAs point to Merope for a reason other than the barnacles.

Out of order & over the top!
many people have played this game in a spirit of cooperation and been quite open about what they were doing and their findings!!
mistakes can be made & things may have been overlooked, people are only human, but accusations of conspiracy are well OTT.

Aside from the line of text you disagreed with, what about the rest? Do you see the shapes of these nebula come together into one symbol found on the barnacle?

Also, it seems that most of the entire area inside of those 3 nebula is blocked by unknown permit just thought Id point that out for those who dont know yet

With regard to a timer on the barnacles they all changed state in 2.1. They then changed state after the usual downtime for the powerplay update. As such I don't think it's an ingame timer as such, more of a change made at their end during a server update.
