UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

I may be imagining it, but I vaguely seem to recollect someone (maybe MB) in the 2.1 livestream mentioning a timer in relation to the barnacles . Perhaps this represents the ripening process & when ripe the MA pods drop?
Or I could just be imagining it- early morning, must have coffee!!!

I vaguely recall something like this as well, coupled with a remark that "scumming will not help". Time to re-watch that live stream, and to test another of my wild theories: Since the great reversion, I have watched twice how other commanders shot up the spikes of the Merope 5C barnacle. However, when I re-entered the game some time later (i.e. after the instance timed out), the site was pristine again.

It would not surprise me at all if the barnacle state is now an attribute of the game account, just like the discovery state of every star/planet/moon/station is. Time to do a tour of the other barnacle sites "confirmed destroyed" in Pleiades.

Make sure you use the current list if you do! We've not quite finished updating it so if you visit one that hasn't been updated since Thursday please PM me or Zenith the details! As far as we can tell the way it looks like they changed on Thursday and has little or nothing to do with an individual's account.
.
It may have something to do with the barnacle data that's being sold instead maybe? Scan it, send back the info and they send out defences if it's being farmed too intensively? Hard to tell as it seems to be a handmade change once they do a server update for powerplay.
.
Full list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...w02tyCGd7IFcfHpjYGeZL9GHQ/edit#gid=1627218729
.
I'd watch out for the barnacles with 6 skimmers and a Goliath though if I were you.. They're not recommended tourist sites at the moment.. :)

There is an issue with the "only changed on Thursday" theory: I visited the Merope 5C barnacle on Wednesday evening, and it was destroyed. Early evening on Thursday, it was restored and had acquired defences. Later on Thursday evening, the spikes were shot off by another commander while I was watching. On Friday evening, it was restored again. When I did my tests yesterday evening, I once again watched how another human commander shot off the spikes. When I logged in again about 1.5 hours later, the spikes were restored again.

That's three restorations, not one. And that's what bugs me.

There are tourists and tourists.

Aside from the line of text you disagreed with, what about the rest? Do you see the shapes of these nebula come together into one symbol found on the barnacle?

Here are my problems with it:

First, it's easy to see a resemblance when you're looking for one. We've already had posters who were sure that the logo was the LMC. We've had posters who were 95% sure it was Barnard's Loop. But when people ask themselves "what object does the barnacle logo resemble?" they're asking the wrong question. They should be asking "if I start with the LMC and try to turn it into a logo, does the result look like the barnacle logo?" I'm unconvinced that if you started from the Pleiades, California, and Barnard's Loop, and tried to produce a logo from them you'd end up with anything like the barnacle logo.

Second, you seem to be working from real world images. IMHO, that is completely invalid. If the logo represents a nebula (or more than one) it must be based on the in-game appearance of that nebula(e).

Overall I think your approach is a bit too much like fitting the facts to the theory. Your theory is that the three parts of the logo represent the nebulae where they're found and so you're looking for similarities to the Pleiades and California nebulae, but IMHO there isn't much resemblance at all. The bit you say resembles Barnard's Loop perhaps has a passing resemblance given there isn't much else it could be, but the other blobs could be any number of nebulae. That said, your theory is as plausible as any and better than many in that it is somewhat testable. So go and find barnacles in Barnard's Loop and spend an equal amount of time searching in other nearby nebulae and if the results match the theory then I'll have a lot more confidence in it.

Here's something to ponder. Why would the barnacles have a mark on them in the first place? We know from the FD comment they are genetically engineered based on an earlier life form. So whatever designed / planted / grew (whatever you want to call it) the barnacles marked them.

But...why? Organization? If you see this mark, you are in one of these nebulae?

There are tourists and tourists.

I think there are two conditions governing the state of the barnacle.

First, there seem to be a global state. If this one is 'off', All commanders will see a harvested barnacle. This one seem to switch on a timer, probably representing regrowth.

Second, the instance state. In 2.0, this one could be reset by logging of and on. Now it takes a bit more. Exactly what you have to do to reset the instance is a bit unclear, but it can be done as long as the global state is 'on.

I don't think it's more complicated than this. Strange findings like spontaneously exploding spikes are probably bugs or instancing issues.

The important thing is that they all seem to regrow. We can probably not prema-kill them.

Good work everybody.[up]

Those of us collecting data for the Canonn have found the states consistent from player to player, I believe.

I'm surveying B types systems, gathering screenshots of the sysmap with the main star scanned for info in order to gather a dataset of such systems so that they can be compared to Merope - I want to know "Why Merope?" in relation to the UA's pointing there.

I've set up a thread (linked below) for any of you that would like to help out by taking screenshots of B type systems in the sysmap. I'm currently gathering data from the trail of them between Pleiades and California, and any help there is welcome. But also, if you're out exploring anywhere and can get me screenies of B type systems that'd be awesome.

THIS^^. Agree with RedWizard.

also seems like we are still to close the loop of the yellow crates, the C in the barnacle could as well be the logo of the company, as speculated before.

I would (from a human viewpoint) expect it to be a maker's mark implying "property of"... But until we find the originators of these things then these are all valid questions & I don't see any way of answering them. You might also ask why they don't carry the logo on all sides-it's equally valid & may have some meaning for the originator, but why?

We also don't know that this is a mark or logo. It could very well be something else.

- It could be a naturally occurring pattern that gets repeated because the barnacles are clones (genetically identical).
- It could be an external organ, with a function. Like an eye or a nose, to detect light/radiation or gas.
- It could be a grip mark, from the giant claw that plants them.[alien]:D

Anyone want to take bets on what the next community goal going to be?

As for the message, my guess at what it says: Dropped out of witch-space, drive engines offline. Station infrastructure intact but navigation offline, we are lost.

That is very brave, I'd say we need Drew to confirm the dots it is not Jakes taking a breath, maybe these are coordinates as well!!

"Thargoids in..witch-space. Disabled..drive engines..weapons offline. station infrastructure intact but.now..we are being boarded.."

New race of cyborg Thargoids emerge....
