Engineers unknown fragment for Palin

I did the following.

I jumped into Hip 14479. Took a vertical route up from the planetry orbits, I did put the sun into target as a distance meter and flew up 200 ls turned and flew from the sun in the other direction with the first blue indicator as speed. Within 3-5 minutes a uss popped. If the first was not the right one the second most always was. I only experienced 2 uss and never 3. If I found an UA or did find 2 uss without one I jumped into another system close by and returned and startet over.

I was really lucky on getting 2 fragments. 11x I got 2 and 4 times only 1. I immediately targeted the UA and flew it over immediately. This was really successful for me. I was done in 3.5 hours with all of it.

At one time I was so confident I found the right way but then the last 3 actually took me 1.5 hours .... so might have been just luck

I'm currently at 15 Unknown Fragments after about 3 hours spent in HIP 14479.
Still 50x faster than finding Chemical Manipulators on planets.

Btw, did they fix that bug where you need to turn in the things each and not all you have at once?
Someone mentioned that you needed to give Elvira her relics that way or 3 will still only count as 1 should you give her 3 at once.
When I went to her I gave her 3x1 just to be safe but I'm wondering if Palin is (was?) just as nitpicky.

Hum, I have 3 chemical manipulators but never have searched on planets. Just done missions. I think mission rewards can be any kind of material/data, as an alternative way to gain them... Right now, I'm searching exquisit focus cristals, never found a single one yet. They say combat ship salvage, but what ships ? Combat ships in RES and in CZ never drop any exquisit focus cristal... (ships in CZ drop absolutely nothing)

For Elvira, I gave her the 3 relics in the same time and had no problem. It was just after the release of 2.1.

I dunno why you'd look for chemical manipulators on planets, the description says frequently found on haulage vessels.

I just turned in 25 all at once to Palin, worked for me. ™

I think the intention was to limit the speed at which people got certain engineers and certain Grade 5 upgrades. The problem is that they implemented a grind rather than a way to slow progress. For instance, they could have had Palin (and every other engineer, in the manner that best suits them) offer you a mission to bring two unknown fragments as a second option to bringing him 25 unknown fragments. When you bring them, he asks for some time to study them. This could be a week or two of real life time. After that time passes, he asks you to bring him a Meta-Alloy, and raise your reputation with "Insert minor faction here" to Allied. Another couple of weeks of timer. The last step could be to bring an intact unknown artefact to him. Once you jump through his hoops, then he unlocks access to Grade 1 upgrades, and will periodically offer you additional quests to raise reputation with him, again with a timer. This lets you bring him the 25 fragments and use upgrades to more rapidly advance at the cost of grinding, or do the quests for slower, but less game time intensive progress.

Something like that would be a much more interesting mechanic. I vote yes to ideas of this kind. I find it odd that some folk actually like the samey repeat stuff type mechanics in this game.

Because planets are the alternative to USS. But the chance of finding them is 1-to-materialvariety-multiplied-by-goeffyourself.
Also nice to hear that Palin ain't as broken as Elvira used to be for some :3

Tell that my dozen attempts of G5 Dirty Drive Tuning vs my 3 attempts at G3 since engineers launched.
They did limit it, but completely wrong with G5 being easy as hell to gather (for me atleast as I already need to throw away things due to limit having 18 of many G5 materials) but awful to unlock and G3 us the other way, spend forever to find the materials but unlocking it is easy.

I only got dozen of Focus Crystals but not exquisite ones. Can't say I've seen these even. As for the dropping, I've yet to get ANY hauler materials from T7's and T9's. Got once some drops from a T6 but several others never dropped a single thing.
It's nice that they did a longer beta this time than they did so far before, but yet again they did not run it long enough nor test the things that would also have needed to be tested, like this RNG crap.
All you needed in beta was fish which was buyable at the engineers, full range of upgrades available and that there will be cargo materials wasn't even mentioned as far as I noticed.

No testing of finding the materials, they just threw some dice and entered the results, atleast hat's what it feels like when I'm hardly getting G3 DDT materials together while I'm overflowing with most G5 ones.

I have gotten some manipulators and distillers from missions, but I got way more and faster simply by going into a res with my anaconda or FDL and targeting only big ships, oddly killing FDL's seems to yield the most. For me anyway.

I unlocked all engeniers but Palin. Geting him was worst gameplay I ever had. If they continue with this ED is going to go fail big time...

Palin takes less time than any of the rares, modular terminals, sirius permit etc 25 UA's sounds grief but it really doesn't take that long in comparison to some of the tasks they had us do :/ post #3 or 4 on this thread is where I went to get mine and it probably took between 1-2 hours, pretty dull, but not as dull as fujin tea.

HIP 14479 is a good spot for UA hunting. Hope it helps.

This is the one, this fine forum user probably saved me many hours

It doesn't matter what exactely you have to do to archive anything, but if it's 'time consuming' like needs 1 hour, ED is going to fail big time, no, it's dead already, you can uninstall.

It is not about time but gameplay. For other engineers I went form station to station, misson to misson doing SOMETHING. Here I'm just crusing for hours in one system and waitng for USS to pop up. To me that is horible...

Acceptable that it is horrible for you. But you ignore that for someone else it is horrible to haul 500 Gold to some odd place 200ly away, this is not fun, is horrible.

This is why I said it doesn't matter any bit at all what exactely you need to do to archive anything. If it is horrible for you, someone else will say is fun and opposite. And this just is some plain stupid easy stuff done in a few hours, maybe you need a couple of evenings to get it. It is all about the time, if the time would be 0 absolutely nothing would be horrible. You demand an item you need for something, you get it deliverd to your ship, nothing horrible to do. But there is a problem with this.

It is horrible I completely agree, but i'm somewhat accustomed to doing horrible things to progress, especially in ED so I view it as if its short, then I can manage ok - i'd already forced myself to do worse so it seemed quite refreshing in comparison :p

Flying in HIP 14479 for about 15 mins already, but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong again? ....

Nothing, its pot luck but sometimes you'll find like 3 anomalies in a row with very little space apart then 15 mins without any - if it seems bad just drop in and out of supercruise

You can bet that for absolut everything that needs to get done to progress, there will be some saying but this is horrible ;)
Just get over it and get it done instead of wasting your time with a forum post about how this has to be changed for you. Won't help you and probably won't get done, and even if so, you've archived it already and never ever will do this crap again. But for that other now have to do what you wanted, which is horrible for them, tee hee.
