Multiplayer - How viable is it to play with your friends?

OK, so I understand the game can be played in solo or in public? Can is also be set to only play with friends?

Also, what do we know so far about "team" play? If you and a group of friends play, what is in the game to allow you to work as a team and reward it?

Or are we unclear on this at the moment?

Thanks, but that doesn't actually say what you can do together?

ie: You and a couple of friends meet up and do...? :)

...and party on!

More seriously, mostly do whatever you like really. T'is a sandbox after all.

* One friend has a huge freighter the others fly fight escort.

* All join together and beat up innocent miners for their cargo.

* Go on an exploration expedition together.

* Race around the moon and back.

* Form an acrobatic formation flying team, the Red Sidewinders.

etc etc...

Whatever you can do in single player. However at the moment there are no mechanics for group play, and rewards go to the person that strikes the killing blow.

In later builds they will add grouping mechanics but who knows when this will be? Second Beta perhaps, maybe even Premium?

.... the same stuff as a single player, except with more than just you doing it.

If the question is relating to what extra content will there be for groups of players then, other than specific missions crafted (procedurally generated?) by FD, I fear that you will be disappointed.

I wonder if there will be group orientated missions? That said, I suspect these could be difficult to administer. I suspect if someone has/gets a mission, friends can come along for the ride & help.

I actually see an hidden fold in NeilF question.

If I have some friends and we do a Cargo Run, let's say I have a big hauler and my two friends drive agile fighters...

How can we split the reward? Why would they help me if there's no way to "distribute wealth" between players?

I believe that player-to-player credit transfers will be possible. Whether there is a service for pre-arranged profit split on completion of a mission / task / etc., I'm not sure.

The group cargo run (or missions?) are an obvious thing for a group of you to do I guess. Why do something alone, when there's safety in numbers.

But, will the game adapt to this? If you're flying alone then it will maybe generate 1 or 2 pirates to attack you? But if there's four of you? Will it crank up the difficulty and instead produce 5-6?

Ah, but then this opens up for quite some heavy cheating...
I would rather having the choice (the moment an Alliance is made up between players) to create a reward system:

1) You choose the players to create an Alliance, called in this case Economic Alliance or Escort Alliance
2) You set the Starting point AND destination.
3) The Cargo screen of the Transporter(s) pilot(s) opens up and allow them to pick which goods are going to be traded
3-bis) The 100% of the revenue is split with a pie chart (mmmh pie) between players.
4)All the Escort pilots may then accept or refuse
4-bis) The Merchant CAN adjust percentage or accept the current plan. He has the last word.
5) Flight is performed
6) The moments the highlighted goods from point 3 are sold a fixed percentage is shared among the players left after point 4-bis)

There would be more, alternative versions, but this Wall of text is big enough.

PS: I still seek job as a Game Designer... :D

I think difficulty should be dependant the Sec-Level of the system and not adjusted automatically.

Auto leveling didn't work great in Oblivion...

Just my opinion.

That sounds cumbersome?

Surely if it's a group of people who know each other, they can work out themselves the payment? ie: Split the profit three ways.

Hopefully there would be a mechanic in place for groups of ships with slaved hyper-drives / FSDs to cost / profit share - if you're flying together then presumably you are on the same team and have some common purpose.

So be it there's you alone, or you and three friends, what you encounter won't change? Is that going to offer any challenge/reward to the four of you?

It's literally 4 or 5 mouse clicks. And possibly very scam-proof.
Maybe it can be fully integrated in the Market screen too...

Why should there be a mechanic for this? A lot of emergent gameplay will come from trust of other players. If someone decides to hire a group to defend their cargo run - then runs with the money it should be their choice - and the choice of the people ripped off to hunt them down, steal their wallet and kick them in the junk

tl;dr: Please top trying to add mechanics for everything in this game and allow the emergent sandbox to grow

Until the grouping mechanic is fully implemented, things are a little difficult right now.

On the bright side, at least a half dozen of us on TeamSpeak last night; managed to meet up an co-ordinate attacks on pirates...
It was truly glorious!

Heh, I remember when playing Frontier... You want challenge?
You GET challenge... Trust me.

It all depends on looking in the murkiest water around...
Of course, you keep on going the same route over and over, pirates may notice...
