well, from a story point of view doesn't make sense they were there 4 days to drop some skimmers at the end. they had enough time the first moment they were discovered before they were attacked.

I assume you've never been involved in any sort of technical rollout.

More seriously though, gameplay always trumps story. From a gameplay perspective, the cap ship has to be there long enough to be noticed and then for people to visit it if they choose. So weeks or months, not hours or even days.

I dont think they are there just to drop skimmers. This capital ship is a big deal and they are securing this particular barnacle.

I'm really wondering if it could be possible for the devs to add a bit of persistency into the mix because that kind of thing is killing it from an immersive standpoint.

of course it is possible. And I also wish that.

Going to be honest, Im a little worried. I am getting burnt out of the game at the moment. I will have to take a good break for a while.

the why nothing has been seen before the skimmers appeared on the known barnacles? I understand your point, but I don't think it is the case. your assumption not necessary :p

Nevermind, I was just making a joke with the feds, I wasn't even considering something was about to happen.

Hiya Commanders:

Meta-Alloys are currently available at Darnielle's Progress in the Maia system. But having heard a rumor that the Barnacles seemed to be "bleeding", I decided to take the trip to Merope 5 C to actually see for myself. You know, up close and for screenshots. I was joined for the search by CMDR Zusagid (who actually did most of the spotting ). The placement of the Barnacles were well documented, so we headed to the coordinates provided. [-26.3496, -156.4044 ]. I began by cursing the dark-side approach, but I think without the darkness, the noticeable glow of the barnacle would not have been seen. Blue against the darn red in the distance, there it was.

Upon reaching the site, a Viper immediately appeared, warning us to keep our nose clean. There were 3 to 4 skimmers patrolling the barnacle site. A trespass zone was in effect. This was something I hadn't seen others deal with. After the skimmers had been eliminated, we took the SRVs closer.

All the formations were intact. The glow from the central structure seemed to be more evident than I have seen when others visited. It looked to spread out in rays from the center beneath the ground.

There also seemed to be flickers of blue, like fireflies in the darkness. Taking a closer look at one of the spikes, some of the pods seem to have "bloomed". This was the source of the fireflies in the dark. Emerging from the open pod were what looked like blue fireflies. Streaming out and away trailing what looked like pollen. If it's pollen, what is it pollinating? If it's fruit, what will it be when ripe?

There was one more site in the area to check. The wrecked Anaconda site. [ Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2 1 Coordinates: 20.8259, 91.7045 ]. There was supposed to be several barnacle sites in the vicinity of the crash, possibly the cause. Upon entering the system, I realized that I was not able to scan the planets. No matter how close, no scan. I will have to return to see if it is just a momentary glitch.

There it was, buried in the ground. You would think and impact great enough to bury 50 percent of an Anaconda would make a sizable crater. Following the path the ship would have flown backward, CMDR Zusagid and I found the next barnacle site. It was ruined. All spires were broken but that did not diminish the glow underground from the central structure. I also did not know that the center could be targeted and scanned for data. More and more interesting.

Well there seems to be many more sites found by others. Maybe I will be able to check out a few more or find my own before they rise from the ground to claim us all [alien] Stay safe out there Commanders. Check your ships carefully. Be sure not to bring back one of those little glowing blue fireflies. They may be watching, monitoring, growing ^_^

That's all for now from CMDR OutpostAntara9
... transmissions from the Outpost have ended ...

Yes yes I have noticed barns seem to be.. glowing alot more than they usually do... Now.

I believe that barnacles are some sort of flower. They are planted by a seed. Once they are planted the barnacle takes time to grow. Now the middle part is the... base of the plant and the spikes are the branches with the leafs on it. (Hence the meta-alloys) I believe the Meta-Alloys will grow and once they have grown fully they will break off in to a seed of sorts. So I sadly believe that we have to wait for the devs to do something.

Just a side note ... I saw Dertheks post about the Passenger Tourist Destinations on Discord ...https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...r-Input-Needed-Passenger-Tourist-Destinations

I have been trying to think up of good lore based locations to add - I know alot of people are putting pretty exploration based ones...

But am hoping we can get some interesting fun stuff in there (that real tourists would go to) that would also be a way to interject alot of the old lore back into the game... (if FD approves it)

And of course make up some new :) ... Just something to think about

Report from IC 4604:

Stage 1 is complete and it is time to head back home. The nebula systems have been scanned and a list of possible candidates has been quickly generated for review. Those marked and identified as "hot" systems have been inspected in first hand by canyon flying the most interesting hotspots, unfortunately no barnacle has been found in the past weeks. It is time for this commander to come back to its regular activities and family now that the "contract" is over.

With all the gathered data a new list of possible targets will be built while we find funding for the stage 2 for a more in-depth prospection of the nebula.

"It has been a great experience." the pilot said, "lots of introspection moments, times well used to remember the important things in life."

---

So, right, I have to head back. During these days I've been inspecting those planets that matched the criteria for possible candidates to host barnacles, and in this time I got my back wrecked due to a bad posture, most likely. I assume the canyon madness didn't allow me to see I was doing it wrong hehe. I'll go back to the bubble to work on other pending stuff and get in touch with the UAs again. Will probably resume the barnacle hunt here later once I manage to collect a bit more information on candidate selection and barnacle spotting, and my back gets a bit better.

I have a lot of information on the IC 4604 nebula including candidates locations and data, I will clean up and upload somewhere. is discord a good place for this?

I'm talking 1.0/1.1 times. I'll need to do some googling when i get home but I'm confident there was locks on horse head then.

I think all sectors that are locked now, were also locked prior to 1.2. The unlocking of these sectors was a bug/mistake. From a story perspective, we can assume that they have been locked the hole time.

It would be nice with a confirmation form Michael though.

Somebody did spot the other day an MA bud drop off its spike with a loud bang (short video, on this thread). Unfortunately does not seem to have been further investigated.

(tourguide) "On the left we have a beautiful nebula, first explored by Cmdr Erimus in 3301, and on the right we have the rumoured location of a famous battle between humanity and the horrific but fabled Thargoids..."

(young voice) "what's a Thargoid? look at all those octagonal ships, who do they belong to?"

(tourguide) " what octagonal ships? ... aaaaaagghhhhhhhhh"

A small tip to those that are looking for UAs.

In the shell systems, you will usually get three types of USS. Degraded Emission, Distress Call and Anomaly.

If you find one that is not an Anomaly, I recommend that you lock on to it and approach slowly. Most USSs will spawn a secondary USS after some time. This usually takes about a minute, instead of waiting five minutes for the next USS, if you just fly past the 'wrong' USS.

This method saves a bit of time. Good luck out there.:)

I dont think they are there just to drop skimmers. This capital ship is a big deal and they are securing this particular barnacle.

Are they? It didn't seem very secure when I landed right under the cap ship, shot up the barnacle, gathered up the materials, and then left without so much as a warning shot from the Feds :D

Yeah, I'm not really suggesting it's just there for that. Skimmers pop up on planets all the time without cap ship involvement. But if they really are trying to secure it then some sort of fixed surface installation would be the logical next step. It'd be cool if a settlement popped up near the barnacle.

So, some random links I've pulled about "permit locked" systems.

David Braben on Permit Regions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM0Gcl7iUM8&feature=youtu.be&t=395

Systems used to require an unknown permit near Horsehead nebula
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/100512-Horsehead-Nebula-not-rendering

Pleiades Nebula Permits

California Nebula Permits

Other random nebula mentions
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/93703-Far-flung-systems-that-are-locked-down

This is meant to be unsorted information to shed light on the history of permit locked areas. Indeed, no mention of Col Sector permits, but you can see there used to be many more.

As is typical, now I'm on my way 4000 LY back home to make an exploration drop, I find the piece of paper showing the star system I wanted to check out :(

Oh well, gives me another excuse for a wander if I don't make Elite with this set of data.

Exact figures aren't known. Some have estimated in the thousands, but it's hard to tell as the effect isn't instantaneous.

FWIW, the amount of UAs needed to shut down a station varies. I shut down one with 100 sales, and had no effect with 300 in another, and caused "issues" on another with 200.
Were they all the same class of station? It would make sense that bigger stations would take longer to shut down.

Unaffected station with 300 sold was an outpost, Walker Survey.
Station which was suffering from "technical issues" after 200 sold was Jaques Station (Orbis? Or at least, some variant). I can't rule out others participating in this, but I sold at least 200.
Station which went into full shutdown after 100 sold was Fozard Dock, also an Orbis.

On an aside, I just did a Dangerous-ranked "Religious" assasination target. Got excited when I warped in to the objective to see a white blip on the radar. Turned out to be a Nav Beacon.... which is weird anyway.... but not a UA as reported in Beta.

AFAIK Barnacles on Earth are permanent and the last stage of their growth, preceded by TWO mobile stages. One I believe is the UA which is looking for a good place to become a Barnacle, the missing stage is the mobile larvae stage which if found would lead us to their source.

its not pollen..... there seeds ;)

I have several possible Barnacle-friendly worlds to report as a result of my excursion this weekend to the Running Man Nebula.

Thanks, I'm heading out to Running Man after a brief stop in Witch Head to visit the newly found barnacles there. I'll be sure to spend some time looking at some of those. Of course, even a few hours looking at a single planet isn't much...
