UAs, Barnacles & other mysteries Thread 7 - The Canonn

No lets be honest, you want him to fail because he stole your sweetroll :p

Joking aside, I will be at the Bubble Nebula soon. I thought I should pop in and see if any Barnacles have been discovered there yet, or if anyone has looked?

If not, I'll have a root around before moving on. What are the likeliest planets/locations they are found on, and do you have any tips beyond that for locating them?

Thanks in advance, and apologies if I've asked anything thunderingly obvious...

On a separate note, I spent a couple of hours flying around 5c last night looking for anything, with some fun canyon flying the order of the day. In the end, I visited one of the barnacles to verify just how easy it is for me to see anything in VR.

Ironically, now that the screen res is better, it's actually harder to see a barnacle - especially destroyed ones that have fewer glowing parts! Might have to chance my arm in the SRV instead - pick a direction and drive :)

I think if there were a technical reason for not being bale to generate caves then it would be due to the Cobra engine rather than procedural generation, in er general.
Minecraft, for example, generates quite cool caves procedurally.
I imagine the problem is that the surface is generated as a heightmap which would rule out caves... but maybe they are just trolling us and we just have found any yet...

It's not that the Cobra engine can't do it, Frontier are currently showcasing beautifully detailed voxel based terrains in Planet Coaster with the ability to mould said terrain in any way you see fit, this includes caves and tunnel systems. Of course this is a relatively new addition and was likely not available (or in the very early stages of development) back when they decided a height map would be the best solution with regards to planetary surface generation.

As everything Frontier does is on the same engine then it's feasible that any technology they design for their other games could be some day utilised in Elite Dangerous.

Listening to the online vids of the UP, there does seem to be high and low notes in groups of 3 to 4 (5 maybe) shame my audio seems to be too soft to pick it up properly

Yeah I don't the graphics engine is the limiting factor at all - the biggest challenge I see would be simulating the lighting as most light inside a cave will be from diffuse reflection off of the planet's own surface, something that is particularly tricky to do in realtime (but not impossible)

My understanding is that it's more a case that the models used to simulate the erosion of the terrain either can't generate caves or that the caves they do generate are not convincing enough to work. I'm sure experiments are being done to make it work, though - as since cave formation has geological processes behind it, they should be able to be modelled.

I think a straight line search method is going to be the best bet. Pick a longitude or latitude and fly straight - keep track of the other coordinate in terms of start and stop location.
If a full pass of whole numbers doesn't find anything, then do the 0.5, then 0.25 and 0.75, and so on.

Is 1km a good height in terms of visibility?
Night runs should probably be marked with an asterisk because it'll be easy to miss something that isn't lit.

Doing both longitude and latitude runs provides some redundancy and revalidation.

I'm not entirely convinced that a grid based search will provide the same type of coverage because a full coordinate grid will be quite big, especially at the equator.
Confirming that you've actually covered the whole grid is quite difficult.

This might seem a bit insane, But in the context of this, is it worth throwing up a 360*360 grid spreadsheet (or more correctly, a -180 to 180 lat and 0-360 long) spreadsheet, and people start filling out grid-squares they've searched. Although still a large amount, 129000 is still much less than billions, and we can spread out over a larger area and not double-over the same areas?

Is Merope 5 C small enough for a 1x1 degree square to be easily searchable without missing bits? If so then this is could be a good idea.

Ok...it is my VERY strong suspicion now that the peanut is an egg stage of an unknown organism (maybe barnacle). We might want to try to hatch it with either mining laser or better a cooking laser. Preferably planetside, maybe Merope 5C.

Morse is also probably a dead end to go with UP, unless the sounds are very much the same as from UA. The strange sounds like microphone thumping are not a recording artefact, they come from the peanut.

Would somebody be so kind as to point me towards information on this 'convoy' that has been talked about, what's it all about, why is this happening, where is it going from and to. I have not heard anything about it other than what is posted in this thread. Maybe I missed it in some patch notes or on Galnet. Or maybe its Frontier just not bothering to inform players hoping they will all come here or go to the Cannon site.

Yes I thought of searching and finding my own secret barnacle. As others pointed out above me, it is potentially pointless. In all honesty I think it is even more futile than anyone has realized. Much easier to work out how to grow my own :)

There were some that were handplaced, we could find them. Some have spread from reproduction, some have been planted by players (intentional or otherwise). I just do not believe they randomly spawn on planets. That just is not how plants (even bio genetically engineered alien plants) work.

Everyone here knows this game has its roots in science. Why would they take that dedication to making things as scientifically realistic as possible and throw it all away when it comes to the biggest most captivating story I have ever had the pleasure of being part of? Agh I hate thinking about it as a game and that side of things, but sometimes I feel I have to just to make sure my ideas are still possible haha.

Someone brought up a great point about precedent. The problem with that is there are new things being added to the game that are completely without precedence. Items, mechanics, sounds and graphics, not so long ago we couldn't even land on planets. The barnacle planting and reproduction theories im suggesting are no more complicated than the political background sim. Barnacles would actually be much simpler.

Lord Zoltan, I definitely have spent a lot of time pondering that particular fly in the ointment, and is the cause of much frustration. How to know if what I personally do is what is causing the state change? I wish it were as simple as everyone agreeing to preserve a barny, but that will never be the case. Give people guns and something weird to look at and they will shoot it. Cant be helped I realize it is human nature. Human nature is destructive though, pretty much the only creatures that put our lives at risk for fun. Funnily enough, the supposed drive behind our destructive behavior is named Thanantos. This is also the name of the battlecruiser hovering over the barnacle on Merope 2A.

Seems to me the only way to possibly protect a barnacle to help it grow would be to place turrets and skimmers and maybe a Battlecruiser or eight...

As you all know we brought the UP to Merope and quickly saw that the UP didn't point to the Merope star. This video shows us narrowing the search down and we also tried to put a UA and a UP together, free floating, in space. Big thanks CMDRs Monkey D Luffy, Bungalo and Hugo Ross!

Youtube is still processing, but the final quality will be 1440p@60 fps.

I also have a video of about 10 minutes with the UP on the surface. Currently uploading.

Does the UP exhibit any sign of specific pointing behaviour while on the surface of Merope 5c - i.e. can it be used to triangulate whatever it is pointing at if you take it to 3 widely separated locations?

Edit: sorry-realise I've been Ninja'd a couple of times on this question, the force is slow this morning (as is this laptop-unfortunately can't look at the videos until tonight). But I've not yet seen an answer to it. Someone said the UP once on Merope 5C points to the centre of the planet, but that would mean it has to be vertical and the pic/vid shows it lying horizontally which is what I expected- if it's nudged does it align itself to a compass point?

Just some speculation again:

What if the UA is genetically modified thargoid device that has been modified by (possibly Federation) to track thargoid signals? UA's didnt originally point to Merope, they may have started to do that a bit later since they may have been modified by (possibly by Federation) to home in to (possibly thargoid) signals. They soon also discovered that Merope is the system, but they didnt know where in the system to look for the origin of signals, so they (possibly Federation again) needed to modify (improve) UA and thats how they came up with the new improved UA (unknown probe). Modified to track signals much more accurately than UA, they too know now that the origin is on Merope 5c...

I'm also moving on to Merope 5c tomorrow.. there clearly must be something there [yesnod] And congrats on new Barnacle discoveries on Merope 5c.

Not encountered one for a while, but I remember that some of the planetary POIs had underground silos- might be we're looking for one of those on Merope 5c, with something in the silo??

Caveat 1: Whilst I am registered on the Canonn site etc, I am at best an associate. currently I don't sit in their comms, run in there gangs, have more that a few on my friends list. I am in no way a spokesperson for the Canonn

Caveat 2: This is going to come across as quite harsh. I don't want it to, so apologies in advance if it does. (I may come back and edit it after posting when I think it is too harsh...)

That said...

I try to keep up and stay active in this thread and mostly my theories are ignored. Im cool with that, most of them are bogus anyway haha. It just seems you guys are pretty set on what you believe and how you do things, and don't like ideas that conflict with your own. This way of thinking has you chasing your own tails and missing obvious in game and forum hints.

The whole mystery has gone from being a community driven event to a Canon driven event. The story has multiple paths it could potentially go down, but it is no longer in the hands of the community as a whole.

In every one of these threads someone says this, and they are wrong every time. In short: The Canonn has no more access to anything else then you or I. They are also independent people and players. If you don't like what they are doing either do it yourself, there is nothing stopping you, or do it from the inside.

You share only specific information...

This accusation gets levelled a lot. It is refuted time and again. But lets play devil's advocate: Where is it written that a group of independent players must share all there in game activities and finding with you or I? How many other groups are there out there, right now, who are also working on this and sharing nothing? You are not complaining about them as you don't know they exist. So you are complaining about the one that shares everything with you. They are under no obligation to do so.

...that which you find to be relevant. Try requesting details on a specific test and I am ignored or told to not bother pursuing that line of thought for no other reason than it is unlikely. Someone comes up with a theory or a test to try that hasnt been done and does not personally have the ability to do it themselves. You would think there would be someone here that would say "actually i am pretty sick of flying around staring down at dirt, maybe I will try that". Instead the person with the idea has to either try it themselves or forget about it, potentially missing a key piece of the puzzle in the process. With the most prolific group using these methods it sends a poor message to the rest of the community on what is important and what to do with specific items.

Same as above. It is there right to do whatever they like in game. They are not a service you are paying for.

We are missing out and going to miss out on really cool stuff because of a Neanderthal approach to science. We also have no chance of changing things now because the the people who promote this approach have gained too much publicity. This irritates me greatly, for I feel like a huge choice has been made for everyone, but not everyone gets a say in the final outcome. One of my favourite things about this game is the incredible amount of choices a player has, and I don't want someone else making them for me.

Same thing. If you can point to the FDEV post that says this stuff will only happen for registered Canonn players I will take all this back. No-one is making choices for you. They are making choices for themselves and sharing the results. If you want to make different choices, then make them. No-one is stopping you. But you can't just demand other players do what you want them to do.

...

Now that all probably sounds a bit harsh, and I don't want it to be, as it is not meant to be. But put simply, the players who make up the Canonn are the ones that:

- Made a group
- Made a web site
- Made multiple public resources and spreadsheets
- Made TS and Discord chanels
- Organised in game searches and events and invited everyone to them
- Got together and shared contact details both in and out of game
- Made thread after thread with huge contents and indexes of everything they know so far

In summary the Canonn have become the de-facto group running all things UA/US/Barnacle related because they have put the massive amount of time and effort into doing so. You cannot complain about that. If you don't like it, make your own. If you don't have time, well sorry but that's life.

But now instead of ranting, let me try to help: Have you...

- Registered on their forums?
- Introduced yourself there?
- Registered on their Discord channel?
- Made friend requests in game, to all the key players?
- Get onto that discord channel when you are in game and asked to take part?
- Offered your suggestions in person and tried to influence the direction as part of their group?

Bottom line: If like me, you just post here from time to time, you are sat on the side lines. You cannot sit on the side lines and complain about being sat on the side lines. Either actively get involved or, do it for yourself. Complaining that others are doing it for themselves is going nowhere.

Confirming that you've actually covered the whole grid is quite difficult.

Coverage needs to be tracked and coordinated between commanders. That's probably easier with a grid-based approached. I agree that it might be hard to be sure a grid square has been completely checked though.

The Cobra engine sure is extremely flexible: http://imgur.com/a/Ga3OV

Listening to the online vids of the UP, there does seem to be high and low notes in groups of 3 to 4 (5 maybe) shame my audio seems to be too soft to pick it up properly

Yep, I've heard it as well and I tried decoding but to no avail. I'm going to use Audacity now, see if I can yield better results.

I'll be heading back to 5c after work today to continue the search, spent a little time on 2a yesterday, scanned the barnacle and got a corrupted data package, and farmed the spikes while the Farragut did precisely nothing, no warning, no attack...

Sorry if my previous post came off harshly, partly venting partly joking around. I truly do admire the work you all do here. I may not agree with how some things are done, but it is hypocritical and wrong for me to discourage anyone else's ideas. If people believe the UP points to 5C at some object that has been missed, by all means scour every inch. I'm personally more inclined to believe it is directing our attention to the 5c barnacle to give more insight on how they grow.

Yes I want to grow my own barnacle, and I am still of the mind that I can. At the very least if I can't plant a barnacle, I can influence it to grow and reproduce by treating it like any normal sustainable crop. Looking at it from a scientific, game design, and biological point of view it makes sense and is more than possible. My main issue is that I can never properly test the theory by myself, as the community will go and shoot the spikes and do what they will, so my test subject is not isolated aand any results would be inconclusive.

This is what gets me frustrated, as I have tried asking for assistance or at the least a gentlemans (or gentlewomans) agreement to have a barnacle left alone and protected for pure observation. If I'm wrong, well no harm done. But if I am right, wouldnt that be amazing? Everyone could stop searching for barnacles, and we could end up with forests of the them!

Quick note also to the fella doing the recon on barnacle sites; you will be able to scan the barnacle trunks once each time the state changes. I speculate there is a state change maybe weekly? If my theory is correct on their reproduction cycles, the barnacle state will change depending on what was done to it in the previous week. This would turn out to be a weekly source of easy funds that requires no damage to be done to the barnacle whatsoever.

...and now you have made me look like a right twonk as I posted on your previous post before reading this :p

I'll leave it there tho as it is done and read by others already.

Not too harsh at all I see your points. Be aware though I dont just pop in here with a crazy theory and then get cranky when no one gives me attention. I think about my theories and do my own tests to find my own results, and I try to report my observations when I can here, whether it is already known or not. Sometimes when I really believe in something, it is hard to play devils advocate and see where it wont work. That is why I post my theories, so they can be shredded and picked apart. If i am forced to defend my theory it is easier to see the flaws and it helps the theory evolve.

I just get a little frustrated at times, and I guess some of what I said came across the wrong way. I am not saying you guys are hiding information from the public and are conspiring to doom the galaxy haha. We just disagree on how certain things should be done, or sometimes on what is relevant information and what is not. Doesn't make anyone wrong, just different. That wont make me stop reading this thread or posting in it, truly is the most mentally stimulating forum I have ever seen and I'm not bailing out just yet haha. If you wanted to continue discussing this matter further feel free to PM me, but I don't want to derail the thread anymore than I have already :(
