Why no 3rd person?

No.
No flight sim has used 3rd person. Otherwise it's not a sim.

Name one maybe? Because I cant. Flanker 2.0, Flacon 4.0, DCS, FSX, X-plane, Prepare 3d, Orbiter, Assetto Corsa ,Steal Beast Pro, Virtual Battlespace.... all have lots of external cam views but I think you know this.

I would like to see my Conda going around as well.
As far as Combat concern. Just make the weapons unaimmable when in 3rd person then it won't the fight

I understand the whole immersion factor playing from the cockpit, but why is there no 3rd person view option?

I doubt it's because of a design flaw, or the inability to provide a playable 3rd person perspective(seeing as there is an option to view your ship from that angle while in flight). I just don't understand why I can't play in 3rd person. Other than it would make fighting and landing a lot easier. We wouldn't want that, now would we...:p
imagine the whine threads i died because i was in 3d view i want my credits back

Personally I would like if it was also possible to steer our ships in 3rd person as well.
Then we can enjoy seeing how it moves and turns.
A lot of good pictures and videos should come from this too.

If this frightens some Commanders, it's just to make it impossible to fire any weapons in 3rd person.

Yes, solely for the screenshots, third person view that is faster to use and would allow zooming out much further. And maybe some control over ship, but restricted so it is not usable in combat.

Yes, they do, and you also know why its possible, in case people forget it.
Its because you're not fighting other players, as soon as you do that its disabled in most cases.

However in those cases its not, you do have the option to go to a server that is 1st PV or 3rd PV. In Elite we are all in the same server therefor I only see this as an option in SOLO mode, not in OPEN.

Complaint "It's stupid"
Proper response "then don't use it".

Complaint "It breaks immersion"
Proper response "then don't use it".

The idea that it give a commander an advantage in combat is silly.
The idea that all advantages must be disallowed would also mean we need to stop support for VR and head-look, and multi-screen (all of which actually do give advantages)
The idea that we must exclude a system that gives advantage if someone doesn't want to use it means we need to get rid of Engineers and PowerPlay and Wings and cancel multi-crew.
Also: the idea that it gives a commander an advantage is silly.

Please remember that FPS will be possible in a very near future, this is a Can of worms and should not be opened.
It do give an advantage, only a blind person would not see that.

FD: ≈ "There will never be a game mode for third person. That isn't the kind of game-play and experience we want for ED/H+."

Proper response: "Thanks for the clarification. I can now move on and live an otherwise enjoyable life."

:p

Perfect post for this thread... Just wish I'd seen it before reading all those pages!

I assume you mean "combat outside of ships".

I don't see that this is the case at all; but don't put a 3rd person view on that then.

How much of an advantage that would be will depend on the mechanics of the game and layout of the levels. It's terribly useful in a game with cover and concealment, but not so useful without.

Also, and I don't know why FPS engines don't ever do this: it's possible to have a third person view and not show things that are not in the first-person line-of-sight. See: most tactical squad shooters (say: Silent Storm)

Also: THIS PROBLEM ALREADY EXISTS THANKS TO VR SUPPORT.

Then you will likely lose new purchases from me once StarCitizen comes out. Milk my wallet while you can.

But you will be an old man when that happens :D

Anyways, its good to have different games, I would not have ED and SC to be the same with different graphics, so lets keep ED as intended = no 3rdpv and SC as intended= with 3rdpv

That's not really the difference.

SC is feature-complete at release. ED has a 10-year, 11-purchase plan to get roughly the same feature set.
SC is 500 systems so they can be deep. ED is 480,000,000,000 systems, almost entirely procedurally generated.
SC has a campaign. ED does not.

SC is now a MWP product, so not feature complete, SC systems will also be PG generated, however with the rule of cool not using science, some people will like that some will not.

SC do not have a campaign, SQ42 will have a campaign, however it will be a additional product and not included in SC, unless you are a KS backer.

You mis-understand.

People who purchased SC will get ship flight, wings, landings (on all planets), FPS ground and space combat, costuming, storage systems, etc.
Also: the stuff is actually modeled. Your ship has a torpedo launcher? You can walk into the ship and see the torpedos and watch them get loaded.
There will also be crafting, trading, etc.
It's also mod-able and can be run on private servers.

People who purchased ED get the ship-game.
Then you can purchase an expansion to get (terrible) modding, powerplay (I don't even use), wings (or was that season 1), and the ability to crew a ship and launch a single fighter.
FD has discussed a "10 year plan", so I must assume you will need to purchase 9 expansions to get feature-complete.

SC systems will also be PG generated, however with the rule of cool not using science, some people will like that some will not.
As oppose to ED and it's WWII fighters in space?

SC do not have a campaign, SQ42 will have a campaign, however it will be a additional product and not included in SC, unless you are a KS backer.
Which I am.

But for non-backers you can look at the other way... just buy the campaign if you prefer that.

Does ED even *have* a campaign planned in its 9-10 for-money expansions?

Don;t get me wrong: I'm on the forums because I play ED and I play it because I enjoy it... but that's mostly because "there's not much out better that I haven't already played to death".

Honestly: If Egosoft had continued to improve the X-Series rather than lost me as a customer with X-Rebirth; I'd likely be there still instead of here.
