I played a new game today.

Thank you! I will download and take a look.

Tracking is one thing, freely moving your head a totally different one. Also the feeling, you get from the scale... You are there!

THIS MIGHT HELP YOU SET IT UP

PS: remember if you increase the Pixel Density to 1.5 and ingame you SS to 1.5, it will be like having the SS at 3x yes3X
The debug tool is useful for games that don't have the SS option in them.

I love the ability to look at a ship/uss/celestial through the side window or wherever and press the 'target' button to lock on to it...

The whole handling with targeting, following ships in combat and piloting dense asteroid fields is improved massively. And a lot more comfortable as well :)

I truly believe that any 'cockpit' sim should be played in VR. E:D, DCS, iRacing....all a million times better to play & so much more immersive than my old 3 24" monitor setup with Trackir. There is something about actually sitting in the cockpit that brings you into the game even more. Makes you care about your ship even more. I never flinched when playing on monitors. Now when I FDL is coming straight at me trying to knock down my shields in combat....I flinch every time. VR isn't cheap....but it just the experience in E:D alone has made it worth the investment. Can only imagine what is to come with second gen & the progression of VR! But for now....it's worth it!

That is true. I tried EvE Valkyrie and Project C.A.R.S. and it is mind blowing.

And i totally agree... buying a Rift and a decent rig to power it is expensive, but worth every cent, even if it is for Elite only... The first time i dared to switch from training in VR to the game... i sat in my Asp for minutes, looking down, looking behind the seat, inspecting that massive cockpit. The moment you notice, what giant behemoth you are piloting... even in the start screen, when you look up to that eagle and think... wow. If you like playing sim games and have some money to spare, get VR.

got my rift yesterday as well so i'll pile into your thread :) .. first evening (until way too late) was just spent playing around with all the usual first time stuff (dreamdeck, VR introduction, Darknet, Oculus Video, lost,The Climb, project cars EVE Valkyrie etc).. amazing and wow was uttered many times.. today after dropping kids off at school I took the morning off work.. started with playing a bit with leap motion and the demos out there.. its cool, but all it really highlights is how much I want Oculus Touch..

then, it was time for the real game I dusted off my Thrustmaster Flight X HOTAS which had been sitting its box for the last year at least..

I haven't really played elite since it was in beta.. I was waiting for VR so i wouldn't burn out without VR.. and now its here.. so my idea is, HOTAS + voice Attack (with either Shattner or Spiner, bought both for good measure) + Rift.

so spent some time training the voice recognition.. its getting there.. then I figured I really need to try to find a good key binding that works for me with this planned set.. tried a few that I found but still working on it they just dont do thins exactly how i would want to do it in my setup.. because you REALLY REALLY need to know all your buttons since there is no looking at cheat-sheets.. and no way to easily memorise 20 buttons by just a fast glance at them.. so buttons will probably have to be limited to a few and I'm hoping voice attack can help me with the rest..

Loaded into the training missions, and WOW when you sit in that cockpit OMG.. this was probably the most immersive thing I have ever done.. my throttle is just where its in the game, as is my joystick.. I turn it and it moves I can see it.. just amazing.. the amount of presence was great.. then I accidentally turned off flight assist.. WOW that gone get nauseating quickly! before i found the button that turned it back on again I was starting to get quite dizzy.. helps to focus on the centre radar..

so, went around shot some canisters was cool, struggling with the HOTAS key mapping, a bit of a pain to go back and forth configuring the keys..pain finding the keyboard while in the rift and doing things..

flew the wolf pack training mission.. ended very quickly.. loaded into the next one, "Face off" 15 minutes later I emerged victorious with a hull damaged all the way down to 9% but i won.. damn I sux hehe Think I will have to play this mission like 5-10 times just to prove to myself i can kill this without taking any hull damage, still struggling with the key bindings.. unfortunately it was lunch time and I had to close down and head to work..

so plan for tonight is to play the training missions a few times get really familar with the buttons that I need, next is to try the voice attack stuff.. then the galaxy will be my playground.

I only got a Nvidia 980, but will try the super sampling anyway.. :D

Amazing and wow... that is true for my experience too... Actually, i had moments of pure awe like i hadn´t in years. Getting a good setup for a HOTAS is quite a job, yes. I fiddled a little with my Rhino X55 setup, but as i am switching to a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS and Thrustmaster rudder pedals next week, i did not went to deeply into changing the setup. However, my first hours in Elite made undenyingly clear, that a decent setup is essential to piloting or playing in general in VR. Voice Attack is a good additional input i think, especially for Elite. Immersive too... i will try it, as soon, as my new controllers have arrived and been setup.

Well, i guess it is time for some more wow now :)

Be seeing you in the (VR-)void!

I just wanted to give a big thank you to the people, pointing me to the SDK and the debug tool. The image quality improved massively. I set the pixels per display to 2.0 and the game runs smooth and without jitter or stutter. I was even able to set everything to high without any problems. The 970 performs surprisingly well.

That's what I was worried about. I have an FX-8350 and a GTX 970. It runs well for you and stays at 90fps on high? I'm going to have to start tucking money away...

I havent checked the FPS, but movement is very smooth and no motion sickness happens. I have tried in stations, in asteroid and ice rings and on different planetary surfaces so far. As said, i have everything on and on high with the exception of the galaxy map, which is in its default setting.

I have a gtx 780 and though I'm at VR low, it's really a different game now! Docking for the first time in VR and flying in the Farseer inc canyons were amazing experiences, and when my canopy was blown out, oh god! Only tried my Asp yet, gonna check my clipper/vulture/courier next :)

Haven't experimented with quality settings yet, but it seems really smooth for me. FPS sometimes dips into 70, but I suppose atw can deal with that still. Anyone else using a gtx 780, what kind of quality settings are you using?

I do have to peak through the nose space occasionally but I can touch type (to an extent) so it's too much of a pain. I do sometimes get the keys muddled and type all kinds of rubbish :)

So VR pilots don't chat much :) Although I have heard of people using voice attack to send pre-programmed responses.

All the ships have a radio. Why people are so shy about actually talking to each other I just don't know. 'Uhura, type lots of LOLs to the Klingons'    !

Because reality :(

Voice com's are tricky hardly anyone uses the same microphone, the same setttings and the same everything.
So while your wingman #3 can barely be understood since he sounds like a timid field mouse your wingman #2 is causing your ears to bleed.
Volume normalization that I'm sure the game has for this help, but it really can only do so much.

So since I too like anyone with a HOTAS, and now with the vive I prefer voice com. But still need to decrease the volume on Tracy, and boost Frank thus making things like TS still most necessary.

Setting up voice comms is not that hard, but I do realise that most people are stupid.

once you go VR in ED it ruins it for anything else.

as for voice comms, personally i have had too many experiences with nittwitts either playing obnoxious music, singing, screaming, or just being plain offensive, so i just tend to do voice with people i know. Even then, whilst I love the ambience ED radio voice gives, and can see how it is perfect IF i did just use to to communicate with randoms from time to time, when actually playing with mates, the novelty soon wears off and i go back to steam chat or discord.

ultimately i guess i am a loner when not with my meatsuit friends.
