Open is BRUTAL...

I had an appalling time in open this evening. Commanders were apologizing for popping in to a (persistent) USS, and even saying hello.

I mean it was utter chaos what with the endless hellos and salutes and excuse me and mind if I collect and don't mind me and all sorts of ridiculous and horrific politeness.

Just unbelievably terrible experience throughout.

*chuckles quietly in the background*

OMG! How did you survive? Did you need counseling?!!!

I'd play in open but it seems to be spawning some rare disease that makes the players chuckle quietly in the background...

[big grin]

So we have this 'who will be the next Power' CG, and I figured I'd go grab myself some Gems for SEPP. I go over to Maiki in my freshly specced Clipper (without imp rank *giggle*), and drop at the USS. I figured I'd be alone, but these USS are apparantly persistent, and a (mostly harmless) cmdr is grabbing stuff with his Python. Hmpf. I check his modules, and he's sporting three beams and two MCs. I think I can guess where each one is. I hail him, but get no response. He continues to manually scoop all gems, so I deploy my limpets. Getting a bit nervous, I park my clipper right in front of him. We're about 30m apart, standing still, staring at each other with hardpoints deployed. Then the inevitable happens.

Darn, that was some ice-cold killer right there! :)
Oh dear gawd you actually communicated with a person in Open!

Imagine the amount of comradarie generated though if CMDRs in the open could engage and toggle player damage instead of it being as is.

Imagine the amount of CMDRs that would jump into open and help others side by side BH-ing without having to consider player damage and both get the same full bounty?

The opportunities for cooperation with other CMDRs are far greater than competition and still, if one wants to toggle PVP on they can.

Leave the BGS effects of players so that those that want to play the political villain can as im sure its effects bring as much enjoyment as causing player respawning

I had a rather poor encounter with a commander recently, the fellow was in a DBS with a 10k bounty, so I decided to pop into his low wake to say hi. He opened fire with particle accelerators so I killed him. At least I think he did, to be honest I was going to kill him anyway. God damn it.

Nah...

It's such a common occurence for me to have fun and friendly encounters in open, it's not worth noting any one particular occurence. That's just my experience in open. I have had total strangers open voice comms with me. I've made several friends that way. I've chatted with total strangers until the sun came up while in RES sites and Combat Zones. I actually don't really care what mode people play in, but it really burns me up when I see people spreading lies about what open is. Always reminds me of those people in movies holding up signs prophesizing the end of the world. If you want to play solo/group that's great, but I don't want to hear about how terrible open is from somebody who isn't even playing there.

I've had ONE hostile interaction with another human. That's it.

Everybody else just seems to go on about their business.

Sometimes I follow miners around in my home system, just 'cause. I used to mine quite a bit when I first started, and I know how it feels to lose a huge haul of painite.

In one instance, I tried to wing up with one, maybe get some change when they cashed in their haul. They never accepted my invite, but they did drop a fair amount of goods as payment. I didn't have any cargo racks in my armored up Imperial Eagle, but it was a nice gesture anyways.

Since the launch of this game, I met three people who attacked me without a reason. (Well, naturally they had their reason, but they chose not to convey it to me) I also had several pirating encounters (on the receiving end) all very civil and although I walked away from those a little poorer, I definitely walked out alive and with a nice story. Then there is a powerplay and "professional PvPers", both brought me a lot of pew-pewing interaction, but that is something that one has to actively seek out. As far as normal random encounters go, I wouldn't say 99%, more like 99.8% of people I met were either minding their own business or, more frequently, downright friendly. Almost every time I visit a community "hub", I have a nice conversation, spend a couple of minutes chatting and very often leave the station with several new friends on my list. I sometimes have to play Solo, as I travel a lot and am forced to play on my laptop via the tethered cellular connection. And it's lonely. I am always looking forward for when I'm able to join the Open, again. It's not that I meet people so often, but even the chance of meeting someone nice on my travels is enough. :)

Depends where you are and who you meet of course, its kind of the Idea of open that you don't know whats coming. Theres good things and bad things, my recent expierence in Open can be best summed up in a Picture

Granted that would have been possible in Group too :p

Just my opinion, but what made the experience great for me was that he had the opportunity to cause harm, and chose not to do so. In this situation, at such close range, no ammount of chaff could have stopped his gimbals, and I wasnt running any SCB. It was like a Mexican standoff, but one that ended in having some tequila. If I could have toggled some 'can't touch this' switch it would not nearly have been as much fun to me. Its like the saying, which I am sure exists in every language, that the quality of a man is shown in how he treats those who are not his superior.

To each his own ofcourse, I didnt start this topic to promote this or that mode over any other.

Also reminds me of the concept of original sin. The fact that we have a choice between good and evil is what makes our choices important. If we're only given one choice, then being good loses any weight because we didn't choose it.

Exactly. I've always found that an interesting philosophical notion, although I never found it very convincing when it came to religious matters. But I digress... :p
