Elite Babysitter...

Is that really how you see yourself?

I was joking, this thread hasn't been successful because of me, but because of the intelligent discussion (for the most part) on both sides (for the most part).

PS. The thought arose only because I was watching Italian news about Beppe Grillo who is very much a demagogue.
Do we know what are the plans for the DDF after BP opens up?

Will it remain restricted?

I imagine so.

I'm a game dev, a Sci-Fi nut and I played Elite first time when I was... 11 I think. Just imagine how much I wanted to be there on the inside track :)
I'm employed with a dev house as well. I'm a jack of all trades working in many areas on this Life is Feudal.

Being a moderator over there makes me chuckle at some of the things here.

So what are you working on Adept?

Lame answer, but it's still so under wraps I'm not allowed to say anything. iOS app though. I did core balancing for Allegiance for years, but that was a labour of love and money only flows the wrong way.

Roleplaying games and boardgames too, but that is more of a hobby.

Just a quick reminder to avoid getting into personal attacks.

I got a few things to tidy up in here so please do try to keep it happy happy joy joy.. while I work on it.

Ok I have deleted a number of postings in here that really didn't progress the topic and were causing a lot of upset.

That one looks interesting, and also explains your strong emotions towards unrestricted PvP. Puts things more into perspective. Also I'm surprised Ubisoft hasn't gone after you guys yet, seeing how the original title of the Settlers was: Serfs: Life is Feudal ;)

However I felt things were going far too far in the direction of anti-griefing to the point where player vs player is being seriously compromised. And I think that the multiplayer aspect of the game is fundamental to its success.

So yes, I am lobbying and not to shape the game to my vision, but in the hopes of trying to arrest and perhaps return the balance to somewhere in the middle. I honestly think some of the current proposals if implemented will harm the game, particularly in the long term.

You have an idea in your mind what this game should be like - that's called Vision.

The topic posted by the DDF was about griefing and anti-social behaviour (serious end of the spectrum) and after some ideas were posted they did not match your vision.

I know you were annoyed by this due to the thread title - that's inflamatory to begin with. "Babysitter"

Rather than debate the issue there you brought it to General in the hopes of gaining more support.

That's called lobbying.

So yes, you were lobbying in the hopes of shaping ED more to your vision.

Call it for what it is Jeff .. be honest with yourself!

However, you're free to do this each any every time the DDF goes against what you believe

I think, perhaps, it was more a case of the straw that broke the camel's back... layers and layers of cotton wool for protection and "choice" leading to isolation and detraction from what was originally billed.

Well, that's the way I feel anyway and I suspect Jeff is the same. Groups could simply have been made beefier (seeing as they said they couldn't get rid of them due to Kickstarter promise) then we wouldn't need a lot of this extra guff. Of course the current topic goes outwith that in certain areas but it does also have a component around unwanted PvP/griefing/etc.

There's no point in trying to create this "dark, dangerous space full of hurdles to take" if those hurdles are just NPC or neutered players, because that gets really boring really quickly and if ED is going that route then I doubt it'll have much longevity.

But I guess that's the point of a buy2play game; who cares, right?

I'd rep you more if I could Liqua (it won't let me yet :D), you've nailed it exactly with this post.

Exacly.
How do You meet other players, if we have tools in game that allows for more and more isolation out of "ignore" (that will hide You in different instance of the same system) "report - resulting in ban" (ridiculous) "transponder" (that allows You to hide Yourself amongs NPCs and make other PC think Youre NPC), when You have such a big space in which we will, without all those layers, have problems in finding ourselfs.

Its just a statement how I and for example my RL friends percieve it. Thus many others that I was talking it about.

And of course it is wrong to lobby (like that on DDF) to change game into something that may be a big failure, just becouse of some people that cannot stand a bit of a PvP.

No Im not making anyone go and PvP. There are solutions arleady for You guys, including mutliple instancing and huge space that is around You, fast ships and powerfull one that can deffend themselfs against signle or even group (smal that is),solo MP and group modes, mutliple ways of staying hidden on radar thus when bein on asteroid field almost unnoticeable.
It will be a real challenege with all those game mechanics to find others in space anyway. Its bout that feeling that this could be it (on a rich gold vein), either You gain or You loose its the risk that makes this whole game interesting. If its gonna be taken ... well ...

Trust me I understand what griefing is, dont want to get griefed eaither like all of us, its simply accepting the fact and moving on making good game for everyone.

.

I'm curious, how do you or anyone here know these FD implemented layers are a bad thing? I mean taking it we are still yet to play in a fully populated PC galaxy? You speak of "isolation", how do you know this? We are still just in alpha no?

You seem to be assuming that all players are willing to "meet" you. We don't all roam about in a city introducing ourselves to everyone that happens to be wearing a red baseball cap now, do we?

Im hoping for a Elite reborn with pvp, with social interaction (both good and bad), revenge, backstabbing, spying, awesome friendships, helpfullness, year long vandettas, monopolies (if you can put the time in or make a trade syndicate with others)

If people can just bail out - the game will slowly die out.

We have soloplay allready comming - why do we need a mp-version where we can only smile and wave at eachother?
