OK, hope this doesn't upset anyone but I'm gonna suggest that kind of question isn't answered by devs. Not knowing whether some activity, no matter how complex / time consuming, will produce results or not is a fundamental immersion factor.
The military seem to be ahead of us and conducting experiments, finding out what they are up to could go a long way to helping us understand the signal. I think, less hijacking more following and observing. (hopefully without network crashes.
Was the network crash coded on purpose to stop us seeing too much.

Why all people assume that you need to go to planet? This is spaceship game, and UA like Thargoid encounters exists in this game before landing where possible.
Look in the stars, take to specific location above planet orbit, maybe the sun even - as most of the systems have some sort of sun.

Theory as to what we/they could be looking for...
What could be down there that the fed and potentially alien race want so much?
A ship that was carrying something, something perhaps it wasn't supposed to. This ship was destroyed, possibly by whatever was on board or possibly by someone who wanted what was onboard. Federation? Aliens? Sirius Corp?
What ship disappeared in shadowy circumstances only to strangely be rediscovered in a million pieces recently? A ship that was of interest to the federation and Sirius Corp?
A ship that they went to great lengths to collect the wreckage in the public eye, but which at the same time, a small corporation also asked pilots to turn the wreckage into them instead and nobody could work out why. Perhaps they didn't believe this was the wreckage and the official story of a failed drive.
The story of the Antares suddenly cut off, case closed. I am not alone in thinking that's not the truth. President Halsey might have something to say on the matter.

So that means the information in the UP about the planet in the sound is NOT merope it is from a nearby planet probably in the UA range.
Its just the wording the U P is the PROBE which is something you'd think would be the thing looking since its a probe.. the artifact who knows what it is. Maybe it is the more advanced of the 2?

Lol, I can't fight.. I tried, but I don't fight enough to learn. I will leave the fighting for the combat pilots..
Im just a sneaky smuggler, with huge interest in exploring, and science.
Speculation - The Military reverse engineered Unknown Artefacts, and have created the Unknown Probes. This why we only see them in convoys in the bubble.

It's got approximately the surface area of Africa by my calculations. I don't think it's practical.

thats what the cannon has been advocating though, so where else are we searching now that basically the rabbit hole has been the wrong alice all along
The UA reports back on ships we know of. The UP seems to have planetary data. It is looking for something that matches its template?

which planet matches its search and as a clue its not in merope. Begin to expand the search parameters
Better choice of action would be to scour the systems where the Unknown Probes were found, with hundreds of pilots. Get as many of the damn things as possible. Then we have something to play with. Instead everyone is mucking about with second hand info and whatnot.
Ok, lets try to expand on that:
Data we have regarding the UAs: They relay system data and details about unknown objects that come into proximity. They are located in a shell around Merope. So, likely, they act as a form of intruder alarm.
UPs have only been found in the possession of the fed.navy. Previously I had thought they might be reversed engineered UAs, but the latest comms chatter from those convoys might indicate they were picked in space, or they may in fact be picking them from a R&D facility to then be brought to a test site.
But there's also the fact that they seem to be giving a fine tuning to the UAs pointing behaviour.
I'm still in the black about what the image from the spectrograph might mean.
