Ok a couple of minutes from me too:
First, FD this is some of the best fun i had around game puzzle ever, that must be why there are so many wise people playing this game.. Kudos to FD and to this amazing community, im liking this game more every day!
Secondly, im new to the forums and the game, and only have <200 hours of game time (most in VR) under my space-belt, so excuse my possible ignorance, i also havent had the chance to make my way there to do testing myself :( ...

And finally, i just wanted to share an more general view, i think its important to understand what it is we are looking for in that image; as we have seen in the past 100000 posts it can be interpreted in too many ways. It needs context.
I dont really offer any, my brain has melted hundreds of posts ago, but i wanted to remind that instead of thinking bottom-up it might be healthy to think top-down too sometimes ..

here are some thought most prominent on my mind.
Also i cant reference where i learned all this but i did read it somewhere in the past week, so please do correct me if im wrong in any point!

- The Unknown Probe was scanned before and did not respond this way, what changed lately ? ( - Perhaps the Barnacles grew and they are pointing to them ? )
- The Unkonwn Artifact appeared first, and its sound produces information about the ship that scanned it ( correct ? : )
- It has been stated that the Unknown Probe has a different purpose than the Artifact.
- The Unknown Probe has also been called a "Key" ( The unknown Permit areas come immediately to mind when reading that)
- The Barnacles harvest the area and produce new materials, they are rare and they might provoke the probes response once in "range" ( - Perhaps if the probe is closer to barnacles on other planets it will point to them ? )
- Merope 5C in one instance, i dont think its a bug.
- The Kinetic push from the probe seems to be stronger if scanned by various ships at once ( - That in combination with the single instance might suggest the need of more players, for example be scanned by 10 near a barnacle or such?)
- I believe it is unlikely that the spectrographic image is a map to a location on the surface, i am more keen on believing it is a "way of doing something", here is why:
> The UA and UP would already guide one to Merope 5C, people would have found the barnacles one way or the other,
as a game designer myself, i doubt there is another special location other than the barnacles already found, it is them this is all pointing to.

Now i hope those three Barnacle locations dont line up with the spectrographic image "angle" lines, because im sure someone of you already tried that, and because it would make for a sad ending to this beautiful puzzle.

I have been holding in since i first found out about this and this thread was on page 4, most of the ideas have already been suggested and explored so i have no real suggestion other than think like a game designer, not an alien : )

I wish we knew if the "key" we have is already enough to activate whatever it needs to, and if whatever the key unlocks is already present in the game ?

At any rate, so far, my money is on activating the barnacles with it somehow, or use it to unlock a permit to somewhere.

FD you rock!! keep doing what you are doing, and dont you dare answer my questions [noob] !!

Hope these thoughts help someone,
GL!

On another note, I know its expensive, but have we tried blowing a UP / UA up near a barnacle?

There's a reason we don't do risky experiments (that don't make a lot of sense to begin with, imo): we've only had one or two probes to test with at a time. In the entire game. They are that damn rare and hard to get. They are also extremely buggy. We've had to wait for support to return some of them several times already.

Video is up on YouTube. Like I said not sure if it's alien but it definitely doesn't look normal. Watch left side of screen when I drop out. You'll see a blue disc fly by. The first part with normal ships is only to show comparison.

Just a quick input here. Too late at night, don't have enough awake braincells to make long theories, sorry.
This picture was taken by Destructionist from when he followed the UP Convoy to Wolf 1453, if I understood his two posts correctly.

Now, looking at that, one thing looks out of place:
Why is the UP Convoy transporting Reactive Armour? I get the Meta Alloys, but I don't understand why it was deemed necessary to bring the other item in the hold. From the ingame description it looks to be armour for personell, and shouldn't really have any effect on a ship. Still, maybe, just for the hell of it, someone can pick up...oh...let's say 6 of these, along with 10 Meta Alloys, the next time a UP is recovered? It certainly can't hurt to try to do exactly what the NPCs/Feds are doing with the UPs "for science."
