This is so hilarious it makes me cry. Conflating traveling 200lyr to fetch 2 tons of commodities with "interesting and engaging gameplay" that "lazy players" will avoid.
Travelling around the bubble few hundred lyrs to every commodity market so that you won't have to do it for a long while again? What's the point of the commodities then?
Why not just put everything from everywhere in one place so you won't have to waste your precious time?
Hang on, if they stock those things, then they already went "places to get them", didn't they ?
Also, whichever storage system they might come up with wouldn't have to be unlimited or available at every station.
And what's "lazy" about storing items for later use ?
That's called logistics and pre-planning, pretty much as "blaze your own trail" as it gets.
When i started doing missions after the commodities were introduced, i found i had like 30 of them without even paying attention in my 40 cargo hold mission Asp. I just sold them all, and i never had any problems getting them later when i needed them, while going from engineer to engineer and from station to station checking their mission board. I even had like 15 modified embedded firmware just from doing missions (while people are complaining they did 100 base assaults and got none). I got so many commodities/very rare mats/data from missions i hardly needed to actively go searching for them (except FSD range ones). You just need to learn the recipes and the commodities/mats to know if you will need/keep it or just skip it for a while. This way my engineers are tier5, the only one i didnt even unlock yet is Bris Dekker, not because i dont have commodities/mats, but because CZs are bugged for me, getting black screens when some ship explodes.
Going mining in a cutter and hoarding 500 tons of osmium so you won't have to go do it ever again is like i just said, hoarding. And later you will complain about the game having no depth because you are unable (or don't want) to diversify your gameplay.
Edit: and yes, i upgraded my FDL and Corvette jumping from engineer to engineer with commodities in my hold (but not before i upgraded their FSD tho). ProTip: get a cargo hold on the ship you are about to upgrade, switch to a 40 lyr jump Asp or something, go get the commodities you want, get back to your ship, switch them and then start your journey.
