There won't be any Storage in this update

You missed number 3.

While carrying engineer commodities you become a magnet for every NPC pirate in the game who magically knows you are carrying 4 tons of whatever.

We can only speculate that NPCs are also desperate to get their ships upgraded and have resorted to attacking innocent players in order to get those commodities. My guess is, they don't know we have engineer materials, but they are so desparate to get them, they attack players and pray to the RNG that we will be carrying what they need.

You passed the test - I was waiting to see who would add that ;)

So I gather you guys are working on commodity storage then?

As it stands we have no choice but to sell or dump things that take us hours if not days/weeks to collect to engage engineer game play. So Blaze Your Own Trail is nothing more than a dream now.

There are so many players stuck in their large ships due to this design floor. I miss the days when I could swap ships and play the way I want.
And no, I refuse to throw anything away since these commodities take too long to collect.

What is engineer gameplay?

Just so you know that sheet just showed the material changes to the blueprints. You'll still need commodities for rank 2 and above, they just weren't included in that sheet because that hasn't changed.

Here's the problem - without storage, those of us in smaller ships (particularly short-range ones) are boned. In a Vulture, you need to fly all over the place to collect materials and commodities so a 4A fuel scoop is an absolute necessity. That leaves a maximum of 8 tonnes of cargo space, assuming you don't want any hull reinforcement, interdictors etc - which makes completing missions for a lot of stuff impossible (and, if you don't have the cargo space for the full reward in terms of commodities, you can't accept or complete the mission in the first place).

Of course, if you're collecting planet-based materials, you immediately lose 4 tonnes because the class 2 compartment has to have a vehicle bay. So that's it - to play Engineers in a Vulture, you can't have interdictors or hull reinforcement packages...which means it's impossible to get modded hull reinforcements. Genius.

Therefore, we can only focus on one blueprint at a time and some modifications are completely impossible to achieve in practical terms...which makes the whole "collect stuff while you're playing the game and rock up at an Engineer's place when you feel like it to see what you can get" an absolute non-starter.

Because of this, the only way to play Engineers in a small ship is to totally focus on it, and even then it's borderline-impossible to get to the higher ranks of modifications.

Sadly Mike, we -do- sell all our hard earned commodities. Frequently.

Here is why:

- There is a strong correlation between cargo capacity and income in your mission design. The bigger the ship and the cargo capacity the wealthier you get.
- Interdictions based on commodities being present.

The smaller ships are doubly penalised in income and risk for having commodities and no storage. The temporary solution without storage: you dump your own progress, for safety, hence the player chagrin at no storage.

Edit: See digitalscream + my post for why. Nice post digitalscream. +rep.

Massive changes announced. In short, material/data gathering will be massively enhanced. Debate is about wheter getting SuperShips is now within everyone's range or not, and if thats good or not. From what I see, getting your ship modded is now available to even the most casual of players, and getting your ship modded all the way to lvl5 is doable within some months for intermediate players. Hardcore guys seem to be able to go balls to the walls and knock themselves out. All pending on actual first-hand experience, but it appears Engineers wil be more about choice/variety and less about time investment. Sounds good, but may remove the wind from the sails of longevity.

Well if longlivety is implemented in such a bad way, the fire it into hell.
There would have been more intelligent ways to implement The Engineers. But it's another time sink.
Why not combine CGs and engineers? Why not link flight skills to gett7ng materials? Like group events and such.
Racing around a planet and getting a material package if you achieve a specific goal or time or whatever.

It seems that every new aspect of the game is always and only linked to combat, exploration, trade.
It seems that the entire game mechanic is linked to these core game elements.
It seems that FDev cant break out of the cave they built and do totally different and cool stuff.

Its not clear enough Mike, can you use a bigger font please? [haha]

So funny, was waiting for this update since Engineers was released.....Only made my FSD rank 4, so i can jump further in my asp and smuggle faster. As it stands, i barely touched anything regarding to engineers and will probably not do so for a few more months. No storage ....only smuggling when i feel like it then....
Such a sucky update this 2.0 one...this is beginning to be boring:(((

Seriously?? How could I ever fully upgrade my battle-ready FDL, if I have to keep a damn cargo rack? That ain't a multi-purpose ship yknow...

"good" job FD...

Well crap...I jettisoned a few earlier to improve my jump range :D

except that, to my knowledge, the NPCs don't actually pick up any cargo even if you drop it for them?*

*It's been a while since I even tried dropping cargo for NPC pirates, as they always just attacked anyway. I'm assuming this hasn't changed

Really not happy that commodities will still be needed for engineers, and still no storage option coming.
I have not played much alately for just this reason, i was waiting to go to jaques, and explore more looking for clues to the UP. But i was wanting to get grade 5 FSD range first, when i saw the post abou needing less mats, and NO commodities, i decided to wait, now only to see we were misled.

Also could this mean the update is coming today, or just a small patch.
This is due to a potential update today which will mostly likely require some server down, and we wanted to make sure that players taking part weren't penalised by this.

Same here. I was waiting for things to get fixed, before playing again. But as it seems, I will be waiting much longer. I loved this game, but it's going nowhere atm.

We could do with storage for sure. I'm quite pleased they aren't dropping the commodities in a way because whilst the first drop of Engineers was a tad excessive it would be a mistake to completely trivialise getting the best grade 5 mods. It should take some effort.

That said, you can put some modules on other ships and transfer them. A conda is good for that ;)

You do realize that because of that commodity system, a mission's that have reward as commodity's and materials, cant be picked up if i dont have cargo rack equiped on my ship... and in most cases people dont need those commodity's, but they do need the material's or lets say just money!!! Can you PLEASE FIX THAT ANNOYING mechanic?

Let me tell you what happens if you implement storage. People will make stocks on magnetic emitter coils, osmium or whatever else commodity. They won't have to actively play and go places to get them. They are lazy and they are hoarders. Dumbing everything down (when some of us already have all engineer tier5 unlocked and ships upgraded) is already enough. Please consider to never implement storage for commodities (yes for modules). Thanks.

To be honest, that sounds great to me, and an opportunity for some emergent gameplay.

Some players will go around gathering the required commodities, other players who don't want to deal with that can go to those players "warehouses" and grab what is needed, for a price of course!

As long as the commodities are available in designated markets, it´s no problem to have no storage. You can buy stuff "just in time", as long as it´s all available in the bubble.
