The Star Citizen Thread

A bit of freindly horseplay, you'll be telling us not to climb trees or play conkers next.
Theres enough political correction on LBC, thats why i want to get into space ya'll...

Horseplay is fine mate - it's the SC vs ED fanboy commentary I'm talking about and also suggesting that CR is not up to the job that he's taken on. It's all to easy for this thread to get derailed into a hate fest and then we'll have no other option than to start handing out infractions and holidays.

With all due respect, it's not up for discussion.

The concepts and promised mechanics of SC have really romanticised the masses. The game has genuinely promised EVERYTHING...

I would love to see the game realise those lofty ambitions, but I cant help but feel that the one thing that is truely missing from every expose thus far is the "fun". It is a game after all, and games should be entertainment.

The only comparison for concern that I can think of is; lusting after a super model from your wildest dreams... only for her personality to turn out to be as dull as dishwater and self obsessed... its a concern that I hope RSI will be on top of.

Does that make sense? (Imho of course)

Elite could potentially suffer a similar fate, but for all of its ambition frontier have remembered to show some humour in the bobbleheads and station announcers. Its those minute passing details that show personality :)

Definately going to be an interesting renaissance for the genre and im certain that whatever our preferences at least one game will tick the boxes!

Meanwhile... Josh Parnell still slaves tirelessly over Limit Theory, which could potentially sucker punch both of the main contenders...

Point taken.
Im a fan of both and wish both of them success...

I have to agree with you there, and offer a wee apology for not helping. I didn't set out to stir anything when I posted my bit on the KS stuff but that's what happened anyway. Doesn't matter if 9 out of 10 cats think it's ok...it only takes one to knock a beer over. It's all downhill from there.

Anyway, it's a lovely looking game and it doesn't deserve a bashing, that's not going to make anyone feel better.

Apologies if that's how it came over - I certainly am not trying to knock CR and CIG personally - being a software developer myself I understand how deadlines can slip, hell I'm very guilty of doing it myself.

I actually agree that they should not have launched anything today if it is in a un-releasable state - doing anything else would have created so much worse PR.

A certain percentage of the backers though over there seem to have upgraded from a shovel to a JCB, and have put a big attitude target on their backs.

Without resorting to cheap slur, I think discussion of the phenomenon of fanboyism and the part it plays in Star Citizen is unavoidable and important.

It actually relates to a serious and topical issue in gaming in general, and especially problematic when dealing dealing with backer projects.

In the case of these projects where communication with backers and their feedback is important, having a group who bizarrely set themselves up as defenders of the faith, and go on to relentless defend every single action, inaction, or decision can be downright fractious and disastrous on so any levels.

I'm not sure how behind closed doors the companies themselves react to these fanboys, because while they clearly resent backers complaining I have yet to see them call out the phalanxes of fanboys engaged in defending them regardless of how groundless, misguided, or fractious they are being.

In other words make a simple statement that serves to stand them down/confirm its OK to say something that isn't singing praises, for example a statement along the lines of "hold up there guys, what these people are saying is fair enough and we've taken note - no need to attack them for it". Of course the complete absence of such statements only serves to empower these fanboys, in effect sending them a clear message of encouragement.

For me this is an issue right up there wide-scale corruption of video game journalism, but far more of an issue during the development stage of a backer project.

For reasons I have yet to work out, Star Citizen is a project particularly beset with misguided defensively entrenched fanboys - to the extent that for this reason alone I may never have backed it in the first place had I realised just how many of these guys were going to show up. So I don't see how you can have any kind of honest and serious discussion of Star Citizen and the experience of being a backer without also talking about them.

I hope discussion of the phenomenon of fanboyism and the part it plays in Star Citizen, and in fact gaming in general, is not ruled out or always construed as a slur.

It is in fact a serious and very topical issue in gaming, and especially problematic when dealing when dealing with backer projects.

For me this is an issue right up there with the issue of wide scale corruption of video game journalism. And it certainly tops the corrupt video game journalism issue during the development stage of a backer project.

And for reasons I have yet to work out, Star Citizen is a project particularly beset with misguided defensively entrenched fanboys. So any honest discussion of Star Citizen and the experience of being a backer must include them.

Yes, I think the issue comes when such discussions and generalisations cloud any rational and reasonable discussions and other topics. There are certainly defensively entrenched 'fanboys' noticeable, as there are defensively entrenched 'complainers'; and defensively entrenched 'complainers about fanboyism'. We all know they exist, all that is required is reading some; any; forums.

I don't think in depth discussion of the phenomenon is particularly relevant, helpful or indeed interesting. In a subject where there are (unsurprisingly) many who are interested in the development of both games, I think it's at best unconstructive and at worst, trolling, to constantly and monotonously complain about a small but vocal portion of the SC community. Worse still to form a tone that suggest that those with an interest in SC (which by virtue of the threat subject will be most of the readers) just as stupid and brainwashed. To me it's a form of fundamentalism that is just a mirror of the 'white knight' behaviour that it targets.

From a personal point of view, I used to find this thread informative and interesting, containing as it did discussions about SC and how the mechanics and approach compare with ED. Being interested in both, but having grown up on this side of the pond on staple diet of Elite and FE2 during the era that they sat on shelves opposite Wing commander and privateer, I find the contrasts between the two games, the relative focus and emphases, the different approach to media and crowdfunding, fascinating. However, the thread has long since been purged of any other topic than vitriolic condemnation of anyone and anything SC related. To my mind, that isn't discussion, nor is it pleasant, nor is it interesting.

Well, you seem a lot more versed in it than I do. Forgive me because for me the Star Citizen experience was my first exposure to these guys and it has been a shock to the system.

I admit I'd like to understand them better in the hope I don't make the same mistake of finding myself in a project infested with them and all that goes with it. But aside from that I've more or less said my piece on them so the soap box will be put away.

By the way. Personally I don't believe I'm engaging in vitriolic condemnation. For me I'm dealing with an unbroken line of bad news and you're just shooting the messenger. However I recognize this is very much a matter of opinion. So in either case you can press a button to ignore me. I know this because I was advised the same when I had a similar problem with someone else's view.

One more point. This:

Worse still to form a tone that suggest that those with an interest in SC (which by virtue of the threat subject will be most of the readers) just as stupid and brainwashed.

I'm not surprised at your comments if this is what you think. Trust me that you've got the wrong end of the stick here. Look closer because this is not my point.

Amusing reading. I am impressed by your restraint to be honest, although I did notice a little slip which you actually apologised for. I have never even seen that over there from anyone.

Have some rep, Mr Ambassador. :)

Read it earlier, great writing :) Also +1 for your very informed posts on both forums, always a good read (supporting both games).

Have you guys ever seen BlendMan's posts over there?
I don't know who he is, or if he's on both forums, but that guy's been doing some hard work in ED's favor, so if you're reading this BlendMan, identify yourself :D

It's kind of depressing. We get into making games because we want to share - and the best reward is when the people we're sharing with are happy and excited.

In-fighting is a distraction, but the larger your fanbase, the harder it is to prevent it yourself. Tensions flare and harsh words fly. The key thing is to have a strong, happy core - and I think SC has that, it's just easy to miss: If you go looking for negativity, you'll find it anywhere. As I alluded earlier, the happy people aren't silent because they don't exist, they just don't want to stir the flames, especially when they devolve into conspiracy theory.

Anyway that's the last on this from me on the topic as I need to heed my own words plus, I've got to keep an eye on the Updates thread for tonight!

See you in space! ;)

I don't know. By distilling it down to in fighting your post paints a world in which this group of zealots doesn't exist. Perhaps this explains the lack of intervention. From your vantage point they aren't distinguishable, which for me is demoralizing. So demoralization all round I guess!

Anyway good luck with that thread watch.

For me the irony is he's fencing with Backers who are comparing the ED universe with an SC universe of a 100+ hand crafted systems. Poor guys don't realise they've been sold another line. Truth that will eventually dawn on them down the line is they'll be lucky to start at best with a number of systems closer to 15-30.

But yeah, boy is he killing the misconceptions one after the other. He's like a little forum terminator gunning for ED.

Star Citizens aren't all bad. If it weren't for some of them, I wouldn't have found out about Elite: Dangerous. Made it just in time to pledge before the extra goodies went away. :)

No of course they are not all bad by any stretch. I'm sorry some people got the impression I think that. Which I certainly don't. I am a long time backer myself, although a jacked off one, but still a backer. And I have a lot of friends who are backers.

However I'm not going to lie to myself or censor my true feelings by saying "I'm sure it will be a great game". Because I'm really not sure. I think at this point for several reasons it has just as much chance of being a complete cluster as anything else.

BTW anymore announcements on AC?

I have to say without Star Citizen I too would not have noticed Elite until much later...

And Im excited to try both, Im actually relieved that they are arriving without overlaps at the moment because I'd like to give both of them my fullest attention.

I was t'other way around, I learned of SC from the ED forums. To be fair I learned of ED quite early (BBC news website on day 1 or 2 of the Kickstarter?)

Looking forward to Squadron 42 the most because it will be something very different from ED. And looking forward to Eve Valkyrie's deathmatch style play because that's different too. Basically, vive la différence, and I look forward to enjoying the differences, not lamenting that each doesn't do everything!
