Alright, so there's some random definition that stands in conflict with how Frontier describes and implemented the Alliance. Is Frontier therefore wrong? I follow the story which they gave us, and according to that EVERY member system has to accept and provide basic human rights.

I find it very.. unfortunate.. that you try to prevent the publication of our article just because you don't like what we state there. I don't like the accusations of your article either (especially as some of those are simply wrong), but I decided to counter them in an approriate way.

That being said, it would now feel very unfair in our eyes if our article was not going to get published. I know that might have happened even without Virgil's intervention, but now it would just feel wrong. Sorry for the pressure, Ian.

1. Those definitions are not 'random' - they are the literal definitions of the words. And yes, with all due respect to Ian et al., Frontier is an organization made up of human beings, and human beings can and do make mistakes. I want to believe the story Frontier gave us about the Alliance too, desperately, but the way the Alliance is currently implemented in-game in this regard means that either A. Frontier screwed up, and still hasn't fixed it (a plausible theory) B. the Alliance was actually designed to be fundamentally hypocritical in this way (many governments are hypocritical - this actually lends to the realism of the game, IMO). I don't know why you're mad at me for merely pointing out the disconnect between Mahon's comments and current in-game fact.

2. What about my comments indicated that I wanted your story blocked?? I'm genuinely confused. I merely wish the opportunity to refute your argument, just as you wish that same opportunity. Why are you getting so angry at me?

If you want to go with that point of view, then anything that has rule of law is authoritarian. Are you suggesting that only people living in Anarchies are truly free, because they do not have to obey rules or law?

You have to be quite careful of how you phrase your arguments, because quite often you'll find you've painted yourself into a corner that you did not mean to.

At first I was confused by your statement, then I realized that you're actually quibbling with Merriam-Webster's definition of the word. If you have a problem with how they 'phrase' things, that's between you and them, but to my knowledge they're a pretty authoritative source of information on the subject. Anyways, I removed the emphasis I put on 'requiring', just in case that was where your beef was...

Private messages are a thing you know fellers?

Note- feel free to delete this post to declutter the thread :)

Absolutely right, sir! Kirby, Martin, if either of you wish to discuss this further, we can do it in a separate thread or via private messages. Sorry to start this whole mess and clutter up the thread, Ian - My apologies :(

I’d suggest that if you disagree with something that’s been put forward in a GalNet submission, the most appropriate response is probably another GalNet submission that counters the original assertions in an in-universe way.

“it would now feel very unfair in our eyes if our article was not going to get published. I know that might have happened even without Virgil's intervention, but now it would just feel wrong.”

The only criteria we adhere to when considering submissions for publication are the guidelines given at the top of this thread. Debates of the kind that have unfolded here have no bearing on whether or not a submission is selected for publication.

“if you agree to post Captain Kirby's response to our article, I sincerely hope you'll be willing to post the Children's imminent response to their response”

Publishing a submission does not constitute a guarantee that we will publish follow-up submissions from the same writer, or that we will publish responses or rebuttals from other writers.

Title:
Beta Hydri Shipwrights says no to the Empire

Description:

Of recent weeks, Beta Hydri has seen a marked increase in Empire ships moving through the system. Amidst growing fears and nationalism, cries by the shipwrights guild for Olympus Village to intervene with stricter border controls have gone unusually silent and unanswered.

Their representative was quoted saying with much bravado,”Our home is the home of generations of LOYAL FEDERATION shipwrights who’ve spent their lives building FEDERATION Battle cruisers to protect OUR Federation. If we allow the unregulated presence of the Empire in our space, who knows what kind of "ALIEN CULTURAL INFLUENCES" they may wrought upon our people, our CHILDREN? Who knows what military secrets they may steal and turn AGAINST us? Where are those FEDERATION ships we built to protect us now?”

Beta Hydri is one of the founding systems of the Federation and the houses the Federation's primary Shipyards. Federation President Hudson has not commented on these events.

Explanations:
I think this is the best I can do. I hope it's not too much god mode-ing and happy to change things in ways that help make sense.
So the general narrative i was going for was this:

Imperial ships in Beta Hydri. Lack of federation response. politicians playing on the nationalistic emotions of generations of shipwrights to convince Olympus Village, the congress house on mars to protect Beta hydri with the ships the federation shipwrights built. Hopefully this would leave the reader with a feeling that something weird is going on because Zachary Hudson is generally very jingoistic. Only those of us in the know, know that it's already under imperial influence and Zachary Hudson is and has been powerless to stop it.

Questions:

P.S. do you call it border control if you're speaking about a star system?

If I could offer some feedback, I'd suggest adding something that explains where these attacks are taking place.

I hear ya! Edited submission below:

Title: Paladin Consortium Calls For Help
Location: Galnet (or Kremainn, LFT 37, Nemet, Qarato, Andhrimi, Segovit, Cubeo)
Time: ASAP
Description:

With reports of attacks on rookie pilots increasing in Kremainn and nearby systems, the Paladin Consortium is putting out a call for assistance. In a recent speech,
Wing Commander Big Pappa appeared to be reaching out to pilots of all walks of life, "Violence has been on the rise in areas of space often traveled by rookie
pilots. Myself having been a recent victim of this random and abhorrent behavior, I personally attest to the severity of the situation. The Paladin Consortium is
calling on all commanders to step in and protect those who need it. We invite everyone, wether Independent, Federation or Alliance, and especially Empire, to join us in stamping
out this poison before it spreads."

The Paladin Consortium seems to be manuevering itself into position to stop or at least stem the flow of violent crime in the region surrounding Kremainn. Crime reports show a near fifty percent
increase in violent crime in areas typically associated with rookie pilots and training grounds.

Title: Limpet Futures crash in
Eol Prou RS-T D3-94

Description:
The price for Limpets, the universal expendable drone, has crashed in Eol Prou RS-T D3-94’s stock markets. Hundreds of exploitative traders desperately attempt to hoard off their remaining supply to limpet-starved miners before Jaques Station's Limpet Fabrication Facility reinitiates production.

Miners have been called to the far flung system to help support the construction of a base by fulfilling an order for the durable metal, Osmium.
Limpets are programmed by mining ships to both prospect and collect ore from asteroid belts and rings.
They are required in huge quantities and, until recently, fetched a king’s ransom to requisition from the bubble.

"When we started this business, folks were running limpets in by the crate from the Border Worlds, they were like gold dust. While we still stand ready to receive anything in transit from the bubble, beginning local construction is a significant boon for miners on this new frontier."

Edit 1:
This has become a serious post. It ties the events of both CGs together with some humanistic considerations for how valuable limpets are in the outback.
Edit 2: updated it as of 11:06. it's a lot better now
Edit 3: fixed and added better wording.

Sorry to jump over you, Olivia, while I like some of the article here, I'm not sure it effectively describes what's happening. I'll give it another stab (a previous statement from Kamadhenu didn't fly, so I must have gotten something wrong).

TITLE: Bulletin from Beta Hydri

DESCRIPTION:

After months of declining the support of four leading galactic politicians, the Beta Hydri Democrats have opened the system to Emperor Lavigny-Duval's fleet of bounty hunters: the Shield of Justice. These Imperially-aligned vigilantes operate within the rule of local law enforcement or are subject to stringent fines and punishment. They supply a local garrison which investigates and pursues all manner of corruption in this proud Federation system.

Two previous attempts to sweep corruption out of the system authority failed, but the Shield of Justice sucessfully suppressed Beta Hydri's large criminal element over a month ago. Their first action was to close the black market on the infamous Black Mausoleum. With their assistance, the Beta Hydri Democrats work towards finally clearing the corruption endemic in the former government of the Beta Hydri Corporation.

Congressman Fallside has voiced his distaste of these recent events, but neither the President nor the Emperor could be reached for comment. Rising tensions between the two superpowers have sparked conflicts in frontier and border systems, but no anti-Federation sentiment is visible in Beta Hydri's sphere of influence.

As Olivia says, we're trying here. We are trying very hard to acknowledge the situation in Beta Hydri, Power Play, and the galaxy's over-arcing storyline without stepping on anyone's toes. Mahon 'controls' Lugh with the help of the Crimson State Group, but that does not make the CSG an Alliance corporation.

If we're simply way off the mark, I hope FDev can step in and tell us what is actually occurring in the system.

Title: Luxury Comes to Jaques Station
Length: 128 words or thereabouts

Story:
A recent gambit by one audacious Imperial King has borne fruit (quite literally) with the launch of the Frontière Finale, 'The Galaxy's Finest Dining Experience.' Patrons of the establishment can look forward to innovative fusions of the most extraordinary delicacies prepared by the mysterious Master Chefs of Noti while imbibing rare of liquors and listening to soothing melodies performed on Kinago violins.

While the long-term viability of the project is considered by many to be suspect, rumors suggest the Frontière Finale is in possession of a substantial quantity of Az Cancri Formula 42, an extremely potent terraforming agent. Perhaps plans are already in place to establish hidden estates and plantations?

Whatever the case, this new venture is sure to add some much needed class (and flavor) to the new frontier.

Title: The 9th Legion Deployment

The 9th Legion has called for an accelerated deployment to Jaques Station. The Chain of Command has decided to form an Imperial Expeditionary Force made up of a variety of skills within its ranks.

This is due to the increasing number of pilots migrating to the station in order to aid in repairs and settle. While it's not made clear why the 9th Legion has decided to make this move, it has been assured that the actions of the 9th will be in line with the ethos of the Empire.

When we tracked down the commander for the Imperial Expeditionary Force, he would not comment on the mission specifics. However, is quoted to say; "The 9th are keen to extend the Empires reach into deep space."

Title: Retaliation against Vonarburg Port

Description:
The organization known as the 'Ronin of Amarak' issued a statement that they were responsible for shutting down Vonarburg Port in the Maridal system.

"Our pilots blockaded the system for weeks. Most of the traders in the system followed our orders but a small group of rioters, known to us simply as "Combat Force", carried out assaults against our fleet. We were able to fend off most of the attacks while our enemies suffered heavy losses. Our intel service informed us that the "Combat Force" was hiding in the local Coriolis starport, Vonarburg Port. To prevent future attacks and to weaken their channels of supply we sent out our most experienced close range explorers to collect as many Unknown Artefacts as possible. They were used by us to shut down the station in order to restore safety in the system."

Message: After much deliberation it has been universally agreed that from now on the "New Bubble" surrounding Jaques station shall be called "The Nubble"

Commander Ouberos of the Jolly Roger Robbery Company coined the term but with his usual generosity he wants nothing in return. Although he was flattered when a campaign to name a planet after him was begun.

On hearing the news citizens all across The Nubble rejoiced and complimented Commander Ouberos on his intellect, generosity and modesty. Many also thought his good looks and charm singled him out for a potential role in leading the Nubble.

Title: Freelance Report: Chaos in Diaguandri

Message: Last Night in the system of Diaguandri, chaos broke out across the system.

In the early hours of August 5th, a streak of violence broke out across the system ranging from dogfights in space to jousting inside Ray Gateway. Starport Security was caught off guard and had an incredibly tough time putting a stop to the madness

“Many of the Commanders involved neglected to report said violence, so we had a very tough time locating and breaking up said fights.” As for the events surrounding the station, one officer stated “There were so damn many of them, we couldn’t distinguish who the hell was involved and who was spectating! We should have just broken the bloody thing up!”

While the security was stressed nearly to a breaking point the shipyards and outfitters of Ray Gateway reported a surge of Commanders buying and selling from them.

“Last night was an incredible boom for our services, and we hope to see it again!”

Detectives dug into the popular website “Rewired” and found a section taken out to advertise last night’s events, but - of course - it was too late to put a stop to it.

“We've found evidence that there are plans for further violence, but we shall be prepared next time.”

TITLE: Unknown Artefact Related Malfunctions Spread

DESCRIPTION:
Short weeks after Ramsbottom Hub in the Segovan system was forced to shut down services, Unknown Artefact related malfunctions have claimed yet another starport. Carthage, the site of a recent Majestic-class Interdictor construction project, was forced to shut down late last week.

Pavel Borodin, Director of Engineering at Marker Depot, explained why the starport now lists meta-alloys as its top priority import.

“We started experiencing issues while the campaign to collect resources for the new Interdictors was well underway. We held Marker Depot together just long enough, but we’re going to need meta-alloys to fix this place up.”

An anonymous representative from the Imperial Internal Security Service noted:

“If you ask the Feds, we Imperials are always to blame for these ‘UA bombs,’ but you can bet your boots that it’s no coincidence Marker Depot was hit while we were sourcing meta-alloys and collecting materials for Interdictor constructions.”

Title: Ramsbottom Massacre

Casualty reports finally rolled in from the Federation at Ramsbottom station. The grand total was over 700,000 dead.

The hub was senselessly bombarded with harmful Unknown Artifacts. The Xeno-objects were shipped into the station in large numbers during a call for supplies from The Future of Segovan to help the Federation build a refueling line into the Pleiades Nebula. When gathered in large numbers they cause malfunctions and reduce station services.

What Pilots DON'T see is the harmful effects inside the station caused by the power outages. Communications are disrupted and even emergency generators are taken offline. Emergency services were overworked to respond to every malfunction and incident. Traffic systems were down as interior shuttles fell from the horizon crashing into the station superstructure. Hospitals were packed to capacity and many of them unable to provide due to power outages causing many to die while waiting for treatment.

This attack, conducted by Imperial Pilots, enraged local Federation citizens with one saying “We're not the only ones suffering like this. You see those numbers that Captain Adhock put out? Federation makes up over half the list! We need those... alloy things! Shield of Justice? HA! More like SHIELDER OF TERRORISTS!”

Post Captain Adhock declined to comment but his office promised an up-to-date breakdown to see where the need for Meta-alloys stands.
