Is the TrackIR a worthwhile upgrade? Does it need the Pro Clip?

Of course not, they're completely different things. But if approx. £100 pounds (or far less if you go EDTracker) seems affordable and approx. £600 does not seem affordable then head tracking enhances the game enormously and is well worth the money.

I wouldn't deny that, I used one for years. It's better than nothing for sure. In this day and age I would personally recommend saving the extra £300 for a Rift.

I loved my TrackIR + Pro Clip - I thought it made a huge difference in how much I enjoyed the game.

I've now got a Vive and have completely stopped playing due to how absolutely awful the game looks in the Vive, even with the super sampling stuff.

Good we all agree then.

This thread is in the wrong forum though.

The Rift is currently $599 - I think in the UK mine cost £500. Expensive, but not £899, £50 shy of being half of your figure in fact. For £899 you would get a Rift and a very good GPU!!

The experience that the TrackIR provides is nowhere near comparable to what VR provides, even when taking into account VR's current short commings. TrackIR + Pro Clip retails on Amazon for £199 - personally speaking I'd save the additional £300 at that point and then turn all my in game settings down until I had enough money to upgrade my GPU.

Current Amazon price £899, anyway still a lot of pennies even if it included a gfx card.
Tried an Oculus out and it's not up to scratch despite the hyperbole.

The Rift is $499 direct from Oculus, shipping it 2 days. If someone is selling one on Amazon for £899 then its a scalper - it is not the price of the device and is pointless in this discussion.

Track IR 5 is great. You don't need the clip, its to unreliable and is too flimsy and breaks. I had Track IR for many years in flightsims, if you don't get VR go for it.

Regards

Don't ever get VR in that case, because you won't like it. BTW, only an idiot would pay that for one from amazon.

The price on Amazon is irrelevant as it's not the going rate. If anyone is daft enough to get stiffed paying £900 for a £500 product, then that's their own stupid fault.

Another +1 for "Save for VR instead." TrackIR was a great solution for the pre-VR age. VR is a whole different level though. I wouldn't bother with anything that doesn't work for VR now, its just a waste. Only way I would recommend is if you are like 15 and have no money. Even then, get a summer job! Get VR.

I went from 3x 42" TVs with TrackIR to VR. Anyone who tells you head tracking is good enough has never tried VR.

It's also not amazon but some other shady company just using amazon as a point of sale.

Seriously you have to be completely daft to pay that price.

I ordered my rift on a Monday start of last month. That Friday I was taking it in for a test drive.
I doubt even amazon priority would have gotten to me any faster.

OP,

I've been rocking a Track IR5 for years. Best Purchase ever.

I prefer it over VR as I can still find and drink my cuppa while using a Track IR.

Oh, don't listen to those who pay out on the clip. I've forgotten I was wearing mine on at least two separate trips to the local shops for gaming supplies.

No one said a thing :)

A quick pic of my set-up, with my Track IR front and centre.

At one time I would have been impressed. Not anymore I'm afraid, not only does that setup provide a less immersive experience it is also more costly. Enjoy your coffee though, but I don't drink and fly - I wait until safely docked so I can enjoy a drink in the safety of the habitation area ;)

it is also more costly

That very much depends on what equipment you already happen to have. It cost me exactly £160 because I already had the equipment to go with it. VR would have involved a new PC, new GPU + the VR its self...

Also, Alt-tab is very important to me and I don't actually like the idea of being so immersed that my kids can't come and speak to me etc.. That said, I really want to try VR, I just won't pay that much to do so.. I want someone I know to get it so I can go and try it out without investing any cash :)

Completely understand you wanting to try it first, as it's not for everyone (particularly if you're prone to motion sickness). I don't ever get sick on cars/planes/boats, but even I've felt a little nauseous with my Rift on occasions - not really with Elite but noticeably with World of Diving, when swimming along the sea bed and looking in a different direction to the one in which I'm moving.

That said, the immersion and overall experience of VR is something you simply cannot describe to someone, as words simply don't do it justice. Elite in particular is just epic - I'd got totally bored of it, hadn't played for months. Now I'm spending hours just buzzing around planet surfaces for the fun of it, and peering round behind my pilot's seat, just to make sure no Thargoids are hiding there ;)

A friend of mine came round to try my Rift the other night. He's interested in VR, but had been very non-committal about investing, despite me evangelising about my Rift.

Within literally a minute of experiencing it for himself though, his words were something along the lines of, "Oh my god, I need to order one of these tomorrow. This is ****ing amazing" :)

Not really, the overall cost of your equipment is still the cost of your equipment. Even if bought over time. If you are going to compare your setup to the cost of VR you need to take it all into account, so that would be 2 additional displays, a GPU to drives those additions and the TrackIR - quite an expense really.

VR does block you out from the outside world, but that is really the point of it. I don't have kids and tend to play during the times of day I can play without interruption, to be fair though I have always done that - even before VR. If I play a game I don't like being bothered, I'm concentrating on that activity alone, same as watching a movie etc. If I know I can't do it without intteruption I tend not to do it at all.

Not a dig at you but I feel this thread is in the wrong section of the forum, the only replies the OP will get is "Buy VR" - we're all VR mad here.... And TrackIR is not VR or anywhere near it, I used TrackIR for years and even in combination with other HMDs pre-oculus DK1 for headtracking.

Anyone knows how does it compare to Tobii EyeX?
...and what's the best option for folks susceptible to headaches? (eye/head/screen movement coordination)

I use my led delan clip headtracker with facetrack noir...I also play through samsung gear VR (PM me if anyone is interested)....sadly though my mouse tracking in trinus does drift a little too much for my liking so I velcroed my led tracker to the side of my HMD......

vr is the future no doubt there...but I need my headtracker still.....just until the next wave of headsets come out that is:D
