UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

Everyone's looking for a UP 'shell' like the UA one. The UA however is pointing at a star and the UP at a specific planet - because of this, is it possible a UP shell could exist inside the Merope system itself? How far has everyone traveled outwards in supercruise within Merope?

Tried this a bit but no dice. I wonder if having certain types of cargo, like meta alloys, attracts them? It works for attracting pirates...

Also, maybe having a reinforced cargo bay where they'd know they would be safe, attracts them. Or carrying a UA.

I forgot this part in my last post, sorry.
The next question is tough: does the image in UP transmissions tell us where to find free-floaters (and thus where they were sent before their capture) or is it a clue to what they were looking for?
It would make no sense whatsoever for the UP to say: "Hey, you found me. Wanna find more of me? Go here!" So for my part, I am ruling out the image being a guide to finding free floaters.

You might be right; "but when you're out there they sing and then they find you"

Didn't Jaques have UA's on board?

The pointing might be a good indicator of spawn. The UAs pointed to a star and they all spawn relative to that star. The UPs point to a planet, and thus might spawn relative to a planet or body. Which might make finding those SS harder to see if they spawn as a subset to a body. Like mission SSs. Just hope its not bugged like the barnacles were and we aren't seeing them when we should be.

At least I think the barnacles were bugged at the very beginning of there story.

I agree 100%. It sounds like the UP that were found (convoy) wasn't the UP that FD expected us to find first (free floating). As such, it makes no sense to use the existing UP and its output to try to decipher where else they can be found. We are on step 2 of the UP mystery and we need to somehow backtrack to step 1.

I think we need to be focusing more around how we were originally expected to find FF UPs. Problem is, I'm not sure how we were expected to find them. Unless there is a method to use the UA or MA somehow. That, or they are sitting at an obvious location that for some reason has escaped everyone on this thread.

*edit* maybe they can be found in witchspace somehow. Doesn't seem possible though.

we know basically where barnacles spawn, right? 66%+ rock, 33% metal 0% ice etc. So why not check planets that are the complete opposite of that? 66% ice, 3% metal etc. Maybe people are ignoring those as targets as barnacles dont' spawn on them.

Now...I know we're short on credible ideas...but "checking icy bodies" is fairly low down on my list of priorities right now. I mean, there can only be what, a few billion to go through?

yes, but we only have to check those where the UPs are floating around, are you crazy or what? :)

It's logical, but probably only obvious after the fact.

Michael

Well if the pointing, message and purpose of the UP's is different to that of the UA's what's logical to me is :

UA's were sent out to probe for us , scan us and transmit details of us (e.g ship drawing) back "home" . The UP's are therefore designed to deliver US a message and they will spawn wherever we're most likely to be found, i.e in the systems where we found each UA and interacted with it.

The message is "a key" that will direct is to a meeting place :) Perhaps both a place, and a time.

Dear MB rep away if i'm "warm" ;)

A bit arbitrary, but I've been checking in-range of planets, in systems in the shell. I've only found 2 x encoded emissions so far.

i.e so the locality is a planet, not "Deep Space"

I suspect that the reason the UA shell has never expanded out again past its present 135-150LY radius from Merope is because the UAs found what they were looking for, or sufficient signs of it to make it worth deploying UPs to specific locations. Therefore, I suspect free-floating UPs are going to be found within 150LY of Merope. I suspect that the UPs wailing behaviour indicates that their purpose requires being close to a planet, so it might be best to search close to planets in this region.
.
The criteria for which planets/regions are of interest to UPs is something that would, as Michael Brookes suggested, only be obvious after the fact and we realise 'oh, that's what they were looking for'. Until then, we can speculate that they might be interested in life of one kind or another or the locations of crashed ships etc. and test that by searching in appropriate locations.
.
It is very important to note that Michael Brookes has suggested that it will be easier to find free-floating UPs when looking in the right place than it is to capture them from the convoys. This means they are almost certainly not as rare as the convoys and may even appear as frequently as UAs do in the shell. That means we can almost certainly rule out Merope 5c as a possible location: it has been searched so much we'd have found them already. We can also more easily rule out other locations, e.g. near Earth-like Worlds, after perhaps a couple of hours rather than days spent searching. This should allow us to refine our search parameters on a shorter timescale.
.
The next question is tough: does the image in UP transmissions tell us where to find free-floaters (and thus where they were sent before their capture) or is it a clue to what they were looking for? I suspect we will only find out after we can compare with that of a free-floating UP. I have a hunch we will see another image from free-floaters and need both images to find the next clue.
.
Have any 'tip-offs' been reported with locations within 150LY of Merope? If so, these planets might be worth looking near (not in orbital cruise but close enough for the planet's name to show on the HUD).
.
What could the UPs be searching for? This would determine the logic of their deployment. Some possibilities to get people thinking:
Earth-like Worlds: (closest that I know of is in the system with the Alliance listening post)
Ammonia worlds
Life-bearing worlds of different kinds
Barnacles (or worlds with an environment suitable for them)
Planets with specific materials (Polonium? Yttrium?)
Inhabited worlds (current human outposts included)
Lost/crashed ships (human or otherwise)
Valid combinations of the above (e.g. Barnacle-friendly with Polonium)
.
TL;DR I suspect that we may be able to find free-floating UPs near planets matching certain criteria within 150LY of Merope. By ruling out even one individual world in each category (e.g. Earth-like or Barnacle-friendly), we can hopefully exclude other worlds in those categories. By a process of elimination, this will hopefully lead us to finding free-floating UPs. Images from both captured and free-floating UP transmissions will help us to find the next clue.

Given a planets's criteria for Barnacle's (non-icy, landable, certain temperature) does the wailing only occur when it's near a matching planet? That should be testable.

When hunting UA's my experience is that with the shell range systems with planets matching the criteria seem to spawn more, especially when close to the planets. I bookmarked several on different sides that seemed to spawn alot, meaning you could jump in and within 20-30 seconds find a USS anomaly where as I would have to cruise 5-10 min in a star only or system with icy planets. I've never been able to quantify however because USS spawning is so random anyway.

With Mr Brookes answers for Free floating UP's (Virtual rep for You, I am out of real Rep for now) I am considering to do this to check is there a shell around California and Witch Head nebulaes:

Choose Barnacle system at California Nebula (California Sector BA-A e6). Plot route to Witch Head nebula Barnacle site (Witch Head Sector LC-V c2-10) Jump with economy jump steps between them. In each system, fly 75% throttle about 2000Ls towards next jump target and check all USS's and then jump next system.

759.92Ly for jumping. Done with one Playing Session (Mine is about 2-3hours).

Something to consider is the current shell is only 15ly "thick" meaning even on economy and assuming you cross another shell you may only hit 3-4 systems lying in the shell range.
