I do belive the center of the attention is Merope 5C in some way.
The UA were seen in systems inn Pleiades before they formed the shell. Could it be a response to increased traffic in the area and a way for the “Unknown entity” to learn more of who what and why before deciding to reveal themselves or wage war. They now have all the information they need in that regard and have now started to probe planets, settlements, cities and that kind of stuff. (In that case, bringing a UP to Earth could have been a dumb move)

1. Establish a scan perimeter, to monitor comings and goings and to gather information about traveling capabilities, ship weapons and defences.
2. Probe settlements to learn about infastructure and production properties.
3. ?????

If this is true we will find probes around planets with settlements and so on. Wich we haven't yet...

If they are just simply looking for somthing, we should find probes everywhere. Wich we haven't yet...

Another theory... The Alliance has been strangely quiet. Could it be that we will find the probes in Alliance space?

Some good options there.
No problem - if humanity is under threat then we can now blame Ed, (anything else we blame LZ, & Riz) :)

I really really really really really hope this finally puts questions about this to bed!

Optimist! what's the betting that exact question pops up within the next 10 pages?
Oh, 100% probability thanks to Cmdr Jordan! :D

Now that I remember, there were some unknown ship sightings some months ago near Maia that looked like DBX but never identified right? Related maybe :p

It was reported in Galnet, yes, but - despite a troll pretending they did - I don't believe it was ever actually repeated by a player.

I think it was simply to offer a bit of colour behind Palin's eventual kidnap - i.e. logically, whoever was responsible for that ship was responsible for nabbing the professor. The whole 'S6:7' designation is mysterious enough for the TinFoil to fly about who it was.

I don't think we've heard the last from those ships, FWIW.

Just wondering out loud... I wonder what would happen if we manage to find the UP in number in the wild and bomb a station with them... And stations which have been UA bombed.... And one that have been metaalloy repaired....

We need more UPs , science awaits!

Accidentally filmed an unknown (Probably DBX) ship while staring at the HIP 17000 B Black Hole.
The clip is edited, however the whole clip could be posted for further reference on demand. There where no ships on my scanners, went out in debug camera mode and suddenly a ship floated by, didn't notice before exiting debug cam where I did see a FSD residue. Tried to scan but it was inside the body exclusion zone of the black hole.

My guess is that the ship passed through the black hole and went to an area far away in the galaxy. Maybe the image of the spectral analysis of UP sound wants to tell us how to approach black holes in order to pass through them. This mechanic would also make sense with the upcoming passengers content so that you can use black holes to take shortcuts to certain areas of the galaxy. Would be cool [cool]

Fill a station with UPs. Then honk. Watch the cascade of EMP pulses tear the station to ribbons

Was my first thought too :) Anyone ever tried to lock the nav-comp on a target behind a black hole and jump through the event-horizon?
Should be possible though, as the physical radius of the black-hole per definition is below a planck-length, hence it cannot shadow the target - same logic as if jumping through a sun´s corona, You can, as the sun´s body doesnt shadow the target, but You get the effects of corona (heat-alarm). Damn if I wasn´t low on money i´d try immediately :)

How? Our ship automatically stops itself if you get to close and the UP is pointing to Merope? what has black holes got anything to do with it?

The older Elite hyperdrives (not the hydrogen powered FSDs we use now) could jump huge distances through witchspace. No blackholes needed to jump halfway across the universe, in fact the mass of a black hole would shorten the distance you travel because the way space needs to compress to enter and stay in witchspace.

Can't find the awesome explanation right now, but there was a band of colors to describe how it worked. Red band travel could easily send you thousands of lightyears away or something. Rumor has it the capital ships still use this old technology, or a newer form of it. Why crazy things happen when they appear. https://youtu.be/pK5pgAgKnCo

The newer drives are a lot smaller and safer. The old witchspace travel had some crazy time dialations and other dangers. Like being lost in witchspace forever. (Thargoids showed up a few hundreds years after witchspace travel)

Edit: Just learned that the older games may not be cannon to elite dangerous source http://www.drewwagar.com//?s=lore&x=0&y=0 So all the references to previous games may be easter eggs. We might be looking at an entirely new and different storyline, which means the Alliance might not have any pre-existing relations to the thargoids. In fact, humanity in the ED universe may not know about thargoids at all?!? Begs a question, what does humanity know in this reboot universe?

The UA's sent back images of OUR ships. So what if the image from the UP isn't an image of THEIR shell, but of OUR bubble? Maybe the line from the center of the diagram is a line drawn from the center of the bubble to Merope?

(I'm going to assume this, like everything else, has been mentioned already so I'm gonna stop talking now).

Yep - I remember - started on a C64 at that time, always was fun to drop out between systems by pulling the stick to Your groin the moment U jumped, killing all the Thorgoid ships, collect the drones and sell - only advisable with Mil-Laser & -shields and a ?Q-Bomb? if I remeber correct...
