The Star Citizen Thread

I have certainly not been getting the pom-poms out for SC, but I do not agree at all that they've sold out.

It has had massive feature-creep, it has over promised and so far under-delivered. It's got bigger, bolder and glossier. But it hasn't fundamentally changed. Wing Commander series was big budget, cinematic and glossy - and that always seemed the best guide to the character of the game we could expect.

Star Citizen is hitting a large audience, but I don't think it will ever be mainstream. Though I suspect the definition of mainstream is a debate in itself.

EDIT
So it boils down to this...actually, really, it doesn't matter anymore... my ED Launcher is almost finished!

People always bring up this comparison with wing commander. Thing is he never said he was shooting for the exact same sensibilities of wing commader.

http://youtu.be/VhsgiliheP0?t=3m7s

"Squadron 42 is the sort of single player experience where you are getting missions. You're in the military. It's not that open world because you're going to be going AWOL if you decide you want to go off to some other planet.

But the idea of it is you serve a campaign, you fly missions. It's branching, just like Wing Commander was. You have exactly that Wing Commander experience with the added bonus of some multiplayer..."

Then he goes on to talk about Star Citizen.

I'll certainly give you this much - digging in to how a project will be funded is critical to knowing where it's headed. Watching that video now, "big game with weekly content" pretty clearly implies maximising weekly sales, which in turn means offering things and going with whatever the most people will buy.

Looking at it with hindsight, the conflict between "core gamers" vs. "expensive content" seems pretty clear in that video. That's turned into a duality between the CIG (development) and RSI (business) sides of the company, and will probably remain for the lifetime of the project.

Yeah. I think it's the case that, while you instinctively know if your tastes are more core, you're better off staying clear of anything the mainstream might jump on - it turns out this is equally true regardless of whether its a publisher calling the shots or a self funded project. But having said that, I really think he could have taken them along with him. I just think there were too many gray areas in the early stage vision. I think you have alluded to this a few times.

OMG, ED is loading up! If anyone wanted to blast me now is your chance!

EDIT

OMG It's beautiful!

I really like the look of the Scimitar.

Two points really - first that the basic dilemma between a low-budget cult classic and an expensive blockbuster isn't unique to games, and second that it's very easy to start out with a cult project then wake up one morning to find yourself making a blockbuster. With people funding the project that can't spell out their requirements before backing, and without an exceptionally clear vision to tell you when more money starts working against your interests, even a saint would find it difficult to keep the project anchored to its original intentions.

Not saying that makes the outcome right (or wrong), just that it's consistent with a newbie crowdfunding mistake.

It's something we've touched on before in this thread Andrew, and I share the feeling that it's a fundamental problem with SC: The lack of a clear vision for the game. It feels like it wants to be all things to all people: an MMO, a first person shooter, a space sim...

Chris Robert's just wants an immersive interactive space sim game. Not just a ship based game. His design from the very beginning was clear of being a game based on the character immersion.

Star Citizen's vision is clear. Their studios to execute this vision are all up and running since January 2014. We will in the coming quarter see some FPS stuff as well. I also think that we will get tid bit reveals of Planetside as well.

I am very confident there are pretty nice things up CIG sleeve. People are just looking at the Arena Commander and thinking about the delays pessimistically while the team working on Arena Commander is 1/4th of the developers working on Star Citizen.

A really clear vision is something your company can use as an organising principle in its work. Microsoft is the archetypal example here - for two decades, "a computer on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software" drove them to become one of the world's most effective companies (actually it drove them too hard, but that's another story). Since they achieved that impossible goal, they've kinda floundered about wondering what to do with themselves.

To my mind, a clear vision for Star Citizen would be something like "to breed a race of heroes that will tame the final frontier". That vision would let them look at big pieces like Squadron 42 and say "this is our breeding ground, how do we write the missions so as to create the heroes of the final frontier?". It would even let them look at tiny pieces like the fish tank and say "how do we represent taming these fish, and can we say they come from distant worlds?". Most importantly of all, it would give them a reason to cut things that don't speak to the vision - heroes can feed fish and drive buggies, but they never go to the toilet.

After watching the final videos on the website it was between Shimapan and 3Dingo for me. I ended up voting for Shimapan.
