So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

With a deep sorrow in our hearts, we must announce to you, that fellow Rifter, CMDR DancingLemur made another crater on a nameless moon in some insignificant system near Formidine Rift with his Asp Xplorer. Last transmission, that we have received was:

"Parking for the night......very tired....must take some sleep....landing gear deployed....vroooooooum......bang.....Eject!..Eject!...Eject!....BOOOM!!!

Well, long story short, I was tired and accidentally hit boost. Result: four months of exploring, countless system scanned, estimated value - enough for the Elite rank. But I will join you again after earning some credits and upgrading my AspX.

Fly safe, o7.

Noted for the book. I feel responsible somehow. It will make a nice little segue. :)

Cheers,

Drew.

I have reached the rift and it is way more difficult to cross than I expected. I feel all alone out here in the night. There is a spooky air about every jump I make wondering if it will be my last. Will I be able to make it back home alive?

My mine starts to dwell into suicide. Its too far to go back. There is nothing out here but a void of emptiness. Just like my soul. I must continue on the path.

Lets just take this one system at a time..

Found an Ammonia based world on the edge of EAFOTS at Myoidee

It has carbon-ammonia based life and Ammonia and Oxygen atmosphere.

The Dark Wheel exists in game so they at least are canonical. The Ryders are canonical because they appear in John Harper's And Here the Wheel. Whether or not Liz is related to the Ryders of TDW is questionable.

Drew reused Tenim Neseva from the pages of the Oolite Saga. Not hard to fathom that the inspiration for 'the old woman' came from that same source. If you want to believe that she's Elyssia Fields ... I'm not going to protest (much). To me though, she's Rebecca. :)

Them Teorge clones all look the same to me. :)

Interesting Im in Eafots BA-A g2

Someone has scanned the main sun. There are a further 6 suns orbitting the main sun.

All these were scanned except the last one.

The strange thing is Aldente scanned all the suns yet didnt scan the one lone planet closest to the sun.

Why would he miss that out if its the closest one to scan on arrival.

He either missed it or it wasn't there.

He may have been flying with a basic discovery scanner and it didn't pick up the planet?

Bummer mate, sorry for your loss, o7 Sir!

I remember when I got stranded in the middle of the rift with my Cobra MkIII. I'd used up all my jumponium and got lost trying to make it through. I was down to one last jump and prayed the planet had some germanium. (This was long before we could see the make up of planets or even exchange materials). Like Sam Beckett, I took a leap into the unknown. The system had one planet. It had no germanium. I dismissed my ship and drove around the planet, parking next to an occupied escape pod I had come across. I recalled my ship while scooping the escape pod and then, back on board my ship I engaged the self destruct sequence. Two months in the black and it had come to this. I made sure I wasn't going to die alone and grinned as my ship exploded into pieces.

07 to all commanders who have been to the rift and not made the journey home...

Hear hear!

That's some hardcore stuff man, I'm cuffing up here. I'm wondering what to do myself, I'm going to bunk now after just reaching -8023 / x / -6242 with my 45Ly Asp. I feel like a spoiled brat here in all my luxury, and you tried it in a Cobra... I just realized I just set a personal record, being over 10k from Sol.

I was thinking of chickening out and doing Heisenbergs, but I don't think I can keep myself from trying to cut along the RR-line, see how far I get. I have a 40t fueltank, and there seem to be scoopables into the sparse area. The plotter doesn't seem to work to well anymore though.

Any last advice before I decide what to do? I want to follow RR until I cannot go no further, as close to the line as possible, but is it possible with 45Ly jumprange? I didn't bring a SRV.

o7 and good night to all of you out here, hmmm, it's chilly in here now, I guess it's just the preminition of something bad going to happen... Have to check my systems before going to bed...

It's certainly possible and there are stories of it being done on just a 20ly jump range but the second time I tried it I was in an Asp and ended up going around it, well away from the rift line itself. At a guess, I'd say it's more than possible with a 45ly jump drive but, in my opinion, don't use any jumponium as there's more chance of getting stranded. If you stick with what your ship can jump as standard then you should (technically) be able to find your way back should you reach a dead end.

This trip out I am bookmarking every 300ly or so. Then I can follow my path back to the core. I will also save any jumponium for the way back just in case. The stars have gotten very far apart and the path forward more winding.

That's a excellent use of bookmarks, good idea!

You don'y have to come back the same way. you can go towards Bovomit and then cross on the Formidine Bridge.

I crossed just slightly to the Bovomt side of the RR line with a 40LY jump range. You have to plot manually, and you can string about 4 jumps in a route before it won't plot any further. then, when you arrive at the last of the 4, you can plot another 4.

I went into the Rift with a DBS, doing jumps that require marking the star and blind jumping but also having to go down to the lowest amount of fuel to get that last LY of jump to make it... and then while engaging FSD the game locks up on me. Luckily, this time I was scraping the bottom of the tank, it was just the graphics and I could hear myself still making the jump and after hitting esc key twice to be back to desktop, I relaunched and engaged SC to run out of fuel just as I made it into the fuel scoop zone. Other times, though, I've had to frantically find a very close star after a full lockup and hope I can make it.

I've had some very harrowing close calls in the Rift, especially thanks to random graphics lock ups in FSD (only in FSD - still trying to figure out the cause/resolution) and adding in the low fuel jumps to get the most range make it even more white knuckle.

If any Xbox players are out in the Rift look me up Pinkmist00107. I'm enroute and 4,000 some odd light years away and will be there in a few hours. Be nice to wing up and search.

I am. I am trying to find a crossing point in the rift. Not easy full of dead ends. Ive got 28ly jump range in the Cobra no jumponium.
