It is only Ammonia Worlds in very specific locations, so I dont feel particularly stupid (no more than usual)

Ammonia + Oxygen mix worlds, not just ammonia. The stats about the planet may help narrow down the search significantly, be sure to do a detailed surface scan if possible o7

It looks like it depicts instructions that the probe is following.
From bottom left clock wise:

1. Search for planet
2. Check for atmosphere
3. scan planet
4A. Descend
or
4B. Send data to merope

Good ideas. Can I tweak it slightly... It is the programming for what the UP does (or 'function' to use MBs wording)
1 it is within the UA shell
2 it is in low orbit (5-20Mm was it?)
3 it is broadcasting the new message
4 something something something Ammonia

So what about if they have been created by the Feds by reverse engineering the UAs?

Just to be clear, my numbers are not clockwise, but following the binary.
Alternatively 3 is scan 4 is looking for ammonia

Worth saving the stats for these worlds, then comparing them to Merope 5c. Is there something on Merope that isn't present on these Ammonia probe-worlds?

Sell any spare UPs at the Canonn Institute in Col 285 Sector IX-T D3-43 its our official test station! (medium pads only)
UAs have an effect on a station when selling so would like to see if UPs do something similar

You get a extremly clear signal from the UP if you position yourself just the right place

I will look outside of the shell at similar worlds to the one you found ilo, try to see if the shell is relevant for both unknown items.

Curious isn't it - probes, presumably looking for something the same as UAs (within the shell defined by the UAs, too) and potentially sending all data back to Merope - if we take the most logical conclusion from that garbled signal you get if you sit between the probe and 5C.

Speculation:
When the probes have confirmed they've found what the whole operation was designed to find -I'm not sure I'll want to be in Merope... After the recent Thargoid galnet, I think it's nailed on that they're looking for the remnants of the previous 'goid scouting party that we've all heard so much about... And they won't be too pleased to find out what happened.

Where the barnacles fit in all this is a total mystery. I don't think they're the same thing though; especially given that the barnacles are so much more widely spread.

Very exciting. And troubling.

Except some of the TipOff mission recovered data recordings clearly imply Thargoids are already intercepting & destroying our ships, though perhaps in a rather surreptitious manner

Actually, my current thoughts are the Merope 5C in some way represents the only survivors of the Thargoid incursion, and they are trying to rebuild. The UA could be teh defence net to keep an eye on us, and the UP searching for places to populate and operate from.

Or searching for other Thargoids to come rescue them perhaps. So the UP sonogram could be intended for their rescuers?

Ok, so I take no definitive distances from Merope have been found yet? I'm currently in Mel 22 Sector HH-V d2-18, which is 112ly from Merope. There appears to be an Ammonia world here, but it's at over 300,000ls from the jump in point. On my way to test this one out, but could be some time.
