Great spot by Muetdhiver here then - anyone wondering how the diagram plugs into this then? Is it a clue to back up the scale in the numbers in this P2P broadcast? Or is there something else in it?
 
My new, maybe-crazy hypothesis.

I believe we may have it all backwards.

It's possible that the probes aren't relaying data to Merope 5c at all...but FROM it.

My theory is that something has crashed into Merope, and has embedded the system parameters of 5c into the UP, then sent them out to any planetary body that they believe could hold further members of their species, hoping that any probes picked up by a friendly in those systems would be able to determine THEIR position from the data in the probe, and be able to assist them somehow.

Best guess? There is a crashed ship somewhere on the surface of 5c, with inhabitants unable to leave it due to the lack of an ammonia atmosphere.

So the first number could be a suitability/viability for life compared to Merope 5 C?
 
Ok, I (might have) craked part of it :

if one looks at the pairs as fraction :

1) 979 / 1000 => 0.979
2) 231 / 250 => 0.924
3) 941 / 200 => 4.705
4) 1153 / 200 => 5.765

It turns out that if one takes merope 5c as a reference scale, and look at the fourth number :
5.765 * 1478 [km] = 8520 [km]

Turns out that 1478 km is Merope 5c radius and 8520 km is Pleiades Sector KC-U b3-1 8 radius.

I will look at the other parameters for other matches.

There you go. Fractions with M5C's parameters as unit. Brilliant stuff.
 
I was thinking along the same lines:

wail 0.979 - health of UP maybe (97.9%)?
wail 1 0.612 - surface temp
wail 2 4.705 - gravity (with rounding error)?
wail 3 5.765 - radius
wail 4 135/588.371 82/50.312 136/0.227 - no idea yet, I'm pretty certain there's three separate sections, maybe co-ordinates?

Location and/or distance to another body?

Suggest we begin decoding and see if we can triangulate.

I'm at work - can anyone dump the planetary stats from the system screen for the planet the transmission we're decoding was generated near?

We really need a recording of the UP transmission from another system. More data points to work out the message is a quicker route to understanding the content of the transmissions!

Well, maybe being a bit literal, but if the big hint was that the image is a key.... well...

A map has a key. The key helps you understand the data.

My own take is that there's four data streams that you can intercept when sitting in front of the UP.
The "Image" tells you what each segment of data means, labelled 1, 2, 3, 4. Each bit of symbology describes that piece of data. We can verify what's what with the actual stats in-game when we scan the planet.

It would make sense to me... artefact transmits a representation of ships, UP transmits a representation of planets. But why?

EDIT: Of interest maybe... unexplored planetary bodies have four pieces of information with them.

Just been back through the thread looking for confirmed free floating UP's. Surprisingly still just these two systems to this point:

We need new recordings from different systems to test out these ideas. Does the UP still send a transmission if it's picked up and taken somewhere else (I don't have one, and not in game to check right now)?

Yes. Follows the same rules as ones got from convoys. Take it to a star/asteroid belt/station, never lights up, no transmission. Take it to a planetary body (moon/planet/gas giant) it'll light up and transmit. Doesn't matter what system (so far)

This! Please can someone with an UP take it to another system and record the transmission? Post it here and we'll decode it and check the numbers to see if any of the theories fit. How exciting! :)
 
Yes, an other recording to decode would be very usefull, especially to crack the last part.

Knowing if some part of the last block are invariant or not would be very usefull.
 
I found the relevant stats - but not density - on eddb. I'm getting some rounding errors still for just about every likely link (although my numbers are probably not authoritative), so I thought maybe distance to Sol is valid - but then when I checked it the ratio is the wrong way round (1.025 done correctly) so I guess something else.

Don't know if it's been brought up - but both planets are tidally locked. Suggest we go hunting for other tidally-locked, ammonia planets.
