Dear Mr Braben - I will spend $100 more if you add a functional external view.

This isn't a debate about whether we need it or not.

If you don't like the external view, then don't use it.

It has been discussed to death in the past and its a completely resounding YES that it does need it including from a dev.

So no more arguing about whether we need it or not.

I want to know how much money you are going to pledge to this if we do convince Mr Braben to make this a priority?

The main thing that the Devs have against it seem to be they don't want you to use it in a fight... So why not disable external views if weapons are deployed, make a it so you can keybind a toggle function that swaps you between camera control and ship control. Now you can film the ship doing anything but fighting and still fly it.

Not even an argument. Those of us with track IR have advantages over people without it. An external view is a level playing field for all.

As long as its not an external view with hud elements etc to be used for actually doing things and just for scenery... then why not?

All I ask is that the debug cam we already have be easier to manipulate. Basically if we could turn the camera around our ship like we can in various car games, that would be neat.

But third person gameplay is not going to happen. Third person would be nice for when we could control our character so we could enjoy our design, but following the game's logic I think everything will always be first person.

+1

I would defo get paint jobs if i could see them!

Get your money out.

You want to be able to take pictures of your ship whilst it is flying around, maybe in the middle of a battle or during a flyby, but you don't want to use the debug camera?

Fine, it is coming in 2.2 and is called a ship-launched fighter.[big grin]

Yes, absolutely. I would like a much better, fully controllable, external view. The current debug camera thing is awkward, and can't move back far enough, especially with a large ship. I want to take screenies of my ships and locations. If the worry is somehow PVP-related, just make it so you can't fire weapons in '3rd person' mode, or whatever. But you should still be able to steer, to make getting good screenshots and videos easier.

I'd be happy if they just doubled or tripled the distance the debug camera could go. It's not too bad as it is, but it becomes challenging to take "creative" shots when everyone is constrained to the same limited zoom shot of their ship.

Of course sometimes trying to get creative can cause terrible mistakes... :)

Completely agree with the op seems silly not to have some better version or 3rd person view (non-combat) I've often wondered and I'm not very tech. saavy but how do they take those great shots on the you tube videos, the debug camera?

I've always felt until you can get-out of your ship, the argument it's not realistic to have an external camera is somewhat lacking. I think it's more realistic I can get out and look, so until I'm unglued from my chair, other unrealistic concessions are in order!

I would strongly recommend not to pledge money bar in jest or in "spirit" (and I'm not sure whether I'm missing the OP's nuances here!). No developer works or concede's to monetary, well, bribes ;-). I hope they do it for my reason alone, which I think supasses dollars in game relevancy!

Watching replays of fights / races are fun too.

I wonder if they could do a dvr sort of thing that records your last 30 mins.. would be fun to go back after to watch.

I used to do that with falcon and many other sims in the days.

I assure you it isn't in jest.

But the point is I have no reason to give them any more money. There is zero reason to. I'm a lifetime passer. Other than a christmas tree last year that I can see inside my cockpit maybe an occasional paint job I still feel less than thrilled at the value I've received even though it is good work because I simply cannot see it in action.

So please give us a REASON to spend some more money. I WANT TO.

That is easy to do. Just disable it in combat. They already make you wait 15 seconds to logout if you are in combat, so use the same mechanism to disable external views.
