VR or not to VR that is my question......

Looks like I'm gonna be the voice of dissent. I've been playing Elite via 2k and 3k screens since 1.0 and recently got the CV1 specifically for Elite as everyone says it's da bomb!

I gave it a good go over a span of two weeks, annnnnnd I'm back to my monitors. The moment it loaded up on my monitor again, I was amazed by how beautiful, clear, and vivid the image was! I had forgotten just how great Elite looks with Ultra settings on a high-end screen.

Now if your main thing in game is 'immersion', VR can't be beat. The shear scale and magnitude of everything is astounding and looking around your cockpit is really cool. However, the image really looks like garbage. Smearing, glare, god-rays, color banding, blur....it was just too much. I read all kinds of tips, especially here on the forums and tried sooooo many different combinations of settings, but it just looks horrible to my eyes.

Anywho, hope my 2 cents helps in your decision process and good luck CMDR!

Hi guys & girls

Ive been playing for about 2 months now and am loving it, i haven't bothered gaming regularly in over 15 years but am hooked after my cousin introduced me to this game.

Ive gone from not gaming to this, i was so engrossed that after a few hours i bought a thrustmaster HOTAS and after 4 weeks moved o the Saitek X52pro. I have a multi monitor setup anyways or a 4k 60" screen to play on but being a bit of a tech head anyways i have now turned my gaze towards VR headsets.

I haven't even looked through one yet & i need to upgrade my PC GPU to 1080ti (tomorrow) as i built the PC with a 660ti, (good card but wasn't really intending on gaming again), the rest of the PC kicks A so no issues there.

I'm after opinions of people who actually uses them though. 'Yes do it', 'for god sake stay away', regrets, tech issues Vive or Oculas etc etc

I figure there's no one better to ask then those already using for my intended purpose.

Cheers

Alan (CMDR Mav359)

First, try the VR of any friend that have one, not all people can deal with 3D and inmersion, mainly above 50yo. In some cases it is causing dizziness, or you can not use them for a long period. Some people with lenses and Myopia or Hyperopia cant use them either.

I've been playing ED since premium beta (June 2014), and I got a CV1 in April. The difference is amazing, as said above you feel like you are flying the ship. Even after months of continuous playing I still sometimes get a huge grin on my face looking around as I lift off and head through the slot.
Apparently I have other games on my hard drive, but I haven't played anything but ED since I got the rift.
Yes there are issues with the rift, with the lens flare and loss of resolution from monitor settings, but there are work arounds to mitigate them, and personally I have had no problems with it. It has generally been plug and play for me. I have noticed that the lens flare seems worse when I'm tired.

I would say if you can afford it get one, but if you have the chance to try one out for an hour or two first I'd recommend doing that, as some people can't seem to get on with VR.

I can't play ED without an HMD now. I have both hmd's but I don't seem to get much use out of the vive atm since I kind of don't have the room for it and rift performs that much better in ED.

My other option to vr is a 32" ultra wide 3440x1440 screen with eyetracker and that was certainly not bad. But it just doesn't compare.
It's just a total game changer.
It's as close as we are going to get this century to an actual holodeck.
Do you want a holodeck?

Wow thats all very positive....

Do we think its worth waiting for GEN2, anyone know when that might be? I'm still upgrading the GPU anyway but i have found a company that rents them out, might rent a unit to have ago and see if i can't nail down a next gen date, i'll buy it now and then they'll release a new one after Christmas probably

Your not likely to see 2nd gen for a couple of years anyway. The hardware to run anything in the way of a big improvement in VR resolutions is going to take some time. As it is ED that has you hot, I would say go for it. It is a totally new experience in VR. Try if your not sure before you buy, but as you can see by people here, no regrets. I personally can't play non VR anymore. It just doesn't do it for me.

However there is one min , wearing glasses want you to use contactlenses.

If you're long-sighted, you probably won't need to wear glasses. (ie older players who use reading glasses for close work)

I'm long-sighted after cataract surgery and don't need glasses at all in my Rift CV1.

LOL, where'd you get this idea?

Anyone who's short sighted (myopia) will need glasses, or contact lenses (or try the kickstarter that provides lenses for the Rift, although dogbite's review of them wasn't great, ymmv).

Players who are long/far sighted (hyperopia) with reasonable prescriptions (just using reading glasses due to age etc) will probably be fine. I am.

I haven't seen any proper stats to suggest players over 50 might be any more or any less prone to VR motion sickness.

And if you get sick in cars/boats/planes etc, don't assume you'll be the same in VR - the mechanism is different. I'm a bit dodgy on boats and aircraft, but fine in VR to the point where my SRV can bounce/roll around on rough terrain and I don't mind one bit. Its crazy fun! But put me in a jet-boat or a fairground ride and the result will not be pretty. :D

VR Lens Lab stopped selling Rift Lenses. They are working on a new design. Vive lenses still available. They are also doing a Kickstarter for different faceplates and padding.

I presume nex generation VR regarding resolution will be a huge load on CPU, GPU and MB.
For most users it will be a {too big ?} big investment therefore the profit for developers is low;
I think we have to wait a while for this nex gen.
For the time being I am happy with my rift CV1. I am 62 and who knows when a better one is to come :D

Glad to see a happy user; I am interested too because of the easyness of use.

I could definitely use some softer pads on the cv1.
I got as the straps let me set them and I still have a brand on my face for about two hours after use...

I just wanted to add my take on this.

I wanted to get into VR, but I couldn't justify spending a load of cash on a CV1/Vive so I went second hand on ebay for a dk2. 150 quid to try it out.

My view is that VR is awesome however for Elite I use too many out of game things, discord, eddb, inara, forums, reddit etc all while playing so I find I only use the headset when I know I'm doing something that is literally in game, e.g. bounty hunting or something with a wing of people where I dont need to look up info.

This turns out to be very little time actually, plus I miss the res of 1440p elite which looks beautiful. The current gen stuff sounds like it is still reasonably low res as well.

For me VR is impressively immersive but the res just makes me head hurt, its way too low. Plus having to lift up the lid constantly made it not a great experience.

Now I've ordered a track clip and will use that for head tracking all the time and then the dk2 as and when the game determines its usefulness.

As always some will love VR and some won't, me I'm in the middle and I hope this opinion helps you.

i loved my DK2, i really did, it was my trusty companion for 18 months before selling last xmas...... and you are right, if you flip flop to your desktop it can be a pain - tho someone has made an app to help with that so you can see desktop stuff IN your ship which sounds cool.....

but you mention image quality... and whilst CV1 is still far from perfect it is a big step up on DK2 imo.... a bit like going from an XB360 port of a game to an XBox 1 port of the same game.

Yeah, ED is just VAT returns with a space theme for some people. Personally, I want to be transported into the game and anything less than that just isn't good enough.
