UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

Despite the somewhat disappointed mood a lot of the participants are feeling, I'd like to say that you all did amazing! Consider the fact that within minutes of receiving clues you all had the next location narrowed down and were already en route. Keeping such a voracious group of sleuths content won't be an easy task for FD but at least they're trying. Some games never get in game mysteries even though the player base would kill for the chance.

If anything this should be considered a chance to reset and rearm for the next leg. Keep in mind the hype that was generated was mostly our own doing. The first clue didn't say we'd solve it on the 28th just that it begins the 28th. Now would be a good time to evaluate what went wrong and what went right, then incorporate ways to improve for the next leg. Great job CMDRs! Make sure to practice a bit more expectation management though. o7

So many people are forgetting original clue of ''the hunt starts on the 28th''

Honestly if it had been figured out and solved by the end of today you'd all be moaning at the FDEVS 1000 times more than you currently are for it being easy and quick to figure out. They haven't created this story/arch/clues to be solved within hours of it beginning... it would be boring if they did.

There's also the theory that the interpretations are incorrect, so really guys, stop blaming the Fdevs because its not over and done with already [uhh] [alien]

I presume, based on lack of announcement, that there is still no information on what to do with the Fish, Tobacco and Latvian Brandy then?

So, we'd rather go with the second guy being the liar right? If he's a liar, wouldn't it make sense for him to steer us away from the truth? So what if he'd try to make us look for something on a planet by saying random coordinates, when we are supposed to look for something completely different: a ship graveyard... The video could be a clue itself, right? What if we are looking for that ship graveyard in that video which interrupted the gamescom interviews? has anyone checked the background on those videos? Can we deduce a general direction there?

True. However, it could've started with something with more fanfare and intrigue. Instead we got a lame intro to fetch (possible) quest CG's.This was more beige than beige can be beige. It feels half done and composed of mostly filler since they're running out of time to finish up season 2 before years end.

I'm glad some are enjoying this. I'm disappointed in FD.

If this was the case the clues would of been timed. they have not been, there has been a major somewhere at the HQ and now were left in limbo.

Did you expect a huge announcement with fireworks and banners and balloons?

No, it was encoded in those interviews as clues because its a game, call it treasure hunting or whatever, but a game it is. No-one gets the answers at the beginning of a game, that takes the fun out of it.

I saw a few people trying to do that based on the nebula in the background of the videos.

It forced the gameplay in open, which is something that I really endorse. It made active the needing for all kind of people, explorers to identify systems, haulers and traders to bring stuff. It made people wing up against the ganking squad so it made people fly in groups with combat ships. It provided riddles and clues for people not being able to play the game so actively to solve or help doing it. And they made it in slow caps instead of an instant reward thing. I really like it.

Basically, the way I see it and mostly because the psedu-npcs were not available for everyone they made this whole mystery a team effort activity, but I think it was not intentional.

I think this whole "cLARP" approach is very interesting and has a lot potential. But the execution here is just lame. If you already have a human gamemaster interacting with players, why on earth do you resort to the most tedious and primitive fetch quest mechanics. And not even once, but three times in a row?!

So true, the narrative pull here is non-existent. It's as if omly simeone who had a drink with the GM gets the clue for the next day's adventure

Perhaps, I didn't partake in the actual gameplay of this today as haven't been able to, so I don't know the full in's and outs of it all...

But perhaps times were misinterpreted?? Everything so far has been our (player) own speculation don't forget. Just because players worked out a time doesn't mean its the correct time..

nah they normally pick someone at random and give them the clue.. specially if were nowhere near figuring stuff out. doesnt happen much, but this time i think someone dropped the ball and made the hints a bit too vague.

Maybe I missed it in the 60 or so pages since the message, but there seems to be another binary neutron/pulsar star. In a system TYC 154-1871-1 with a V-class arrival star and three planets, two metal-rich (landable) and one gas giant. Will this system fit in somewhere? It's some 5.000 ly from Sol.

I haven't got time to check it out for quite some time.

I might have a little bit more sympathy with this if they hadn't spent a fortnight already teasing that we'd be getting "a truth that the whole galaxy would want to hear". And then there was an actual set of clues leading people all over the place, cool codes, the kind of stuff you'd expect from these sort of events/ARGs. And then after making out like today was the day to get excited about, it was essentially a 12 hour bewildering scrabble to be told "give us space booze and we'll tell you the next bit some other time"

Anyone expecting a Thargoid armada to come pouring out of the black hole at Maia probably had their hopes too high, but constantly saying that nobody should have been hoping for anything at all is a bit disingenuous.

There will be more, a few more probably about two or three locations and then we will need to identify which one is the correct - without bruteforcing it-. I don't think they are vague, just not enough yet.

Yeah i had high hopes too for thargoids, i know this wont be that.. this is probably the secret location of raxxla or the origin of life in this galaxy or something along those lines. why would 3 trader friends want to out the location of a thargoid armada heading for the bubble.. no that would be military based this is more like a game of hide and seek.

Yep. I know the event was set up as only "starting on the 28th", but inevitably everyone was expecting some sort of payoff on the 28th. Now a good chunk of the engaged playerbase is disappointed. This thing needs to wrap up pretty quickly.

And I'm not a fan of this "meet the pseudo-NPC" mechanic. Between the limitations of ED's instancing system, the large proportion of players who don't want to play in Open, and timezone considerations, this mechanic is very exclusionary. There were (I estimate) somewhere between 500 and 1000 players trying to find these guys, how many actually got to see them? 20? Less? There are already too many lotteries in this game without this sort of thing. I like the idea of this sort of interaction but I just don't think it's practical. Persistent POIs would probably be a better mechanic.

With the caveat that I am neither a programmer or a games designer...

...I don't see why this was not just scripted NPCs. They have them arrive at certain places at certain times, say there piece in local and move on. Then anyone could take part in any game mode.

This has been a let down for me. I was 16Kly out during Games Con and made my way back, Buckyballing it for the last 5Kly to be ready for the 28th. I was all set for a few days of uncovering clues, riddles and jumping around with lots of tea, in whatever mode I wanted to play in. Then I find that loads of clues, and therefore gameplay was dropped on 26th or 27th and where already solved. Great. Then the rest is this clunky live actor, open only affair.

And how they could not see that some       would just come in to ruin it is beyond me.

Lol what are you smoking? There's no possible way that we're getting Raxxla before Thargoids; I'm not trying to be mean with that, but man come on. [squeeeee]
