Where did you find out the wreck was a Thargoids ship?

It's an assumption based on the octagonal shape of the center piece in the crashed craft.

If they used the octagonal design for non-thargoid objects, it would be just silly from a design point of view. When designing objects for a game (or any design really) you have to tell a story with the design. Thargoids had iconic octagonal ships in previous games. Now, another unrelated species should NOT come up with the same design for any reason.

Think of it this way; Would you be OK with it if there was a ship called Cobra MkIII in this game which looked nothing like the cobra in the original games but another ship with a totally different name based on the old Cobra design. It would be awkward, wouldn't it?

Therefore, this thing should be related to Thargoids one way or the other and Occam's razor says it's directly of Thargoid manufacture.

Or I'll have to find and eat a hat when the new update comes :D

My take on the 'is it Thargoid or not' question depends a lot on some metagaming. Or more like meta-game designing.

In my mind, as far as I understand the design philosophy behind ED and its lore, there's simply no way they'll be using 8 fold rotational symmetry on anything else than the Thargoids. The consistency in design simply doesn't allow for that.

Just like they followed the original ship designs for the iconic snake-ships, they will definitely follow the octagonal design for the Thargoids, which is just as much iconic. Hence, no 8 fold rotational symmetry for other species, ergo this thing is either directly Thargoid, or based on some design someone learned from Thargoids.

I could of course be wrong but in this, I don't think I am.

Sound reasoning IMHO.

I agree completely. I think it makes more sense for Thargoids to be updated around the THEME of Hexagons than it does for an all new race to adopt the hexagon theme.

Lost the UP while dropping it on top of the wreck outside OC/after glide. (Is this normal or does that warrant a ticket?) Going for another one and also bringing an UA.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but it doesn't give out much, if any, of a scanner return when you drive around it. I thought it would be going crazy, but no, nothing even like finding some canisters or human structures.

Octagon, but I agree completely.

I gave this example earlier but I'll repeat again. Imagine how awkward it would be if there was a ship in ED which looked a lot like the original Cobra design but was called 'Falcon' or something with the bird theme, and then Cobra mkIII came out with a totally different design (because we absolutely know Thargoids are coming and they have to have the octagonal ships).

What exactly is that format you want to 'endorse'? I'm happy to do it however you want, but it all goes to the excel that Arguendo manages so..

logging of spawns, documenting planet data by screenshot, link to audios ( i will post mine tomorrow)

just a "it might mean nothing at all", but at -57 la 43.4 lon the stars and terrain match that of the "crashed ship" in the promo video noise thing. Well, its close anyway. Not that it matters, cos we've found the crash now. But.... I'll keep looking anyway :) This is far more like the place we were looking for than the river-valley we actually found it in. (did you move it MB?)

Did anyone try to use the ECM(Electronic Countermeasure) near the crashed ship yet? I'm guessing not since no one uses it.

Congrats to all involved in discovering this "ship"!!! Wish I could be there now with you all but unfortunately I have to work out of town until the weekend. Certainly lots of exciting things ahead!

Expanding on the reason why I think this thing is a Thargoid machine; Imagine this scenario:

-Oh what is that?

-Looks like an insect with an octagonal body?

Old man walks in.
-Lads, I know what this is. It is a 'Morthliag battle drone'.

Why? Just to spite all the nerds waiting for Thargoids to show up at last?

Even in this rather rough and ready illustration I popped together from an image on Kerrash's twitter feed you can see it roughly Thargoid shaped, at least on top. I know there is more under there. But this is rather depressingly convincing for me. I say depressingly as this is pretty much what I was hopping we would not get.
