I hear what you are saying, and I hope my entry above doesn´t read like it is demanding every submission to be published. Or that FD should give every submission detailed or individual feedback (I know from personal experience how time-consuming it can be to give in-depth feedback).
My intention here is simply to highlight the fact, that GalNet is currently not very well suited to setting up and getting
longer player driven narratives across to a wider audience. And perhabs the time/money that FD can spend on community involvement doesn´t allow it to be more than it currently is. But I can´t help but feel a wasted opportunity here. The game is sometimes critizied for lacking depth, so yes, I think it is a valid part of a buissenes model to consider if a larger investment in player-driven narrative could be a valid trade-off compared to other uses of those ressources.
What I tried to hint at above, is that a larger engagement with the player community might help flesh out the game and bring context to in-game actions. Currently this is allready happening on a case-by-case basis - one event and one submission at a time. The trick is that longer narratives risk falling to pieces.
I guess all I was suggesting, was the possibility to submit entire storylines rather than single stories. Such a storyline could then be accepted or rejected (as is currently happening with individual stories). But submission would have to be in a closed forum (to avoid giving avay surprises) and would in some cases require some adjustment if in-game events forced some modifications to be made after submission.
Would it require more ressources? Perhabs some, but you could also see it as the difference between submitting a handful of stories individually here in the open forum or submitting them as a package in a closed forum. A simple feedback mechanism based on a multiple-choice mechanic shouldn´t be to hard to implement or time-consuming to use. Not necessarily much more expensive in manpower on FD side - but would allow for
longer player driven narratives in GalNet and thus to tap into a much wider pool of creative minds to help populate this great galaxy
A simple multiple-choice based feedback mechanism could also be valuable with regard to the current stand-alone GalNet submissions. I have noticed how Ian takes his time to write here in the thread when and where things has been posted on GalNet. I am sure it is a worthy investment from the code-wizards at FD to put together a simple website for GalNet submission that could to some extent automate this feedback process as well as provide just one or two key-words to explain why a given submission was rejected.
- and with this suggestion Ill stop derailing this thread that is properly for GalNet submissions, and not the discussion of procedures. Sorry about that.
