News GalNet Submissions

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Just a thought, but maybe we players should actually set up out own GalNet version then. I already do so for my RP faction in their Dangerous Thread. I wouldn't mind if the Twin Candles etc. use it for the same.

The reason that Fdev do it the current way is so they can publish bits that fit within the current game or would be something that fits within the current lore.

What would be nice would just to be advised if a submission is rejected, and why.

You don't know if you've been missed or rejected a lot of the time.

Title: Better Late than Never

Description: After 9 months of darkness and social decay, life has returned is returning to normal to in Pic Tok. Residents and Sirius Inc technicians sighed in collective relief as local UA malfunctions abruptly ended; only 2 casualties and 11 non-fatal injuries have been reported. On August 28th, this nominally defunct system was overrun by participants in a galaxy-wide hunt coordinated by the 'Granger Gang'. Many "hunters" were surprised by the poor condition of Lobachevsky Outpost; at least 3 vessels had to request emergency fuel service. Regrettably, many newcomers were unaware of local malfunctions; at least 3 vessels were stranded, and had to request emergency fuel service. Within hours of their passing, all major services were restored Lobachevsky Outpost was restored to working order. It's not entirely clear whether local authorities or transient unseen "good Samaritans" (or Sirius Inc) deserve credit. The question may never be answered, especially to the satisfaction of locals. That being said, we're happy with this outcome. Unconfirmed reports from San hint at growing discontent within Sirius Inc. Senior Aide Humberto Guthrie, speaking for the organization, had this to say: "Granger Madness" has ended, but Sirius Inc remains committed to Pic Tok. Our stakeholders should expect sanity and prosperity with Sirius".

Notes: Pic Tok was an experimental subject, and victim of long-term UA malfunctions. I wrote another local news story about it in March.

Title: A call for aid: Blight and plague strikes Chhal and surrounding systems

Location: Sol, Alioth, Achenar, Shinrarta Deshra, Hip 72043, Chhal, Kokan, Vodyak, Baneb Xoc (hopefully as broad as possible to draw in needed aid)

Description: A malevolent mutation in a bacteria naturally encountered in many hydroponic systems is believed to be the source of the multiple famines and outbreaks currently running rampant in Chhal and the surrounding systems of Kokan, Vodyak and Baneb Xoc.

In response to this, the Institute of Galactic Exploration and Research (IGER) is putting out a general call for humanitarian aid in the form of medicines and food to the affected systems. "While we are confident that our scientists will be able to develop a suitable countermeasure given time, we urgently need the assistance of independent pilots to help stabilize the immediate situation", said IGER director Henry Okuba.

Toxins from the bacteria appear to cause cell membranes to loose the ability to sustain themselves properly, and symptoms of infection are eerily alike in humans as well as in crops. Pilots bringing aid are advised to not stray outside designated safe zones.

"While no settlements of the IGER scientific cooperative have been infected, we cannot stand idly by while our neighbours in these systems suffer", director Okuba finished.

We don’t usually publish submissions that seek to provide a blow-by-blow account of a single story. On this occasion, it was felt that your submission ‘Thousands of Slaves Freed after Twin Candles Initiative’ covered the main points.

The only criteria we adhere to when reviewing submissions for publication are those given in the submission guidelines at the top of this thread. Whether or not a submission is part of a wider story arc has no bearing on whether or not it is selected for publication.

Which comments in particular?

The first quote read to many of us that story arcs weren't possible (as in possibly interpreted to be only a summary of a final story was acceptable rather than blow by blow accounts), whereas your second quote made it clear that wasn't what you meant.

I hear what you are saying, and I hope my entry above doesn´t read like it is demanding every submission to be published. Or that FD should give every submission detailed or individual feedback (I know from personal experience how time-consuming it can be to give in-depth feedback).

My intention here is simply to highlight the fact, that GalNet is currently not very well suited to setting up and getting longer player driven narratives across to a wider audience. And perhabs the time/money that FD can spend on community involvement doesn´t allow it to be more than it currently is. But I can´t help but feel a wasted opportunity here. The game is sometimes critizied for lacking depth, so yes, I think it is a valid part of a buissenes model to consider if a larger investment in player-driven narrative could be a valid trade-off compared to other uses of those ressources.

What I tried to hint at above, is that a larger engagement with the player community might help flesh out the game and bring context to in-game actions. Currently this is allready happening on a case-by-case basis - one event and one submission at a time. The trick is that longer narratives risk falling to pieces.

I guess all I was suggesting, was the possibility to submit entire storylines rather than single stories. Such a storyline could then be accepted or rejected (as is currently happening with individual stories). But submission would have to be in a closed forum (to avoid giving avay surprises) and would in some cases require some adjustment if in-game events forced some modifications to be made after submission.

Would it require more ressources? Perhabs some, but you could also see it as the difference between submitting a handful of stories individually here in the open forum or submitting them as a package in a closed forum. A simple feedback mechanism based on a multiple-choice mechanic shouldn´t be to hard to implement or time-consuming to use. Not necessarily much more expensive in manpower on FD side - but would allow for longer player driven narratives in GalNet and thus to tap into a much wider pool of creative minds to help populate this great galaxy :)

A simple multiple-choice based feedback mechanism could also be valuable with regard to the current stand-alone GalNet submissions. I have noticed how Ian takes his time to write here in the thread when and where things has been posted on GalNet. I am sure it is a worthy investment from the code-wizards at FD to put together a simple website for GalNet submission that could to some extent automate this feedback process as well as provide just one or two key-words to explain why a given submission was rejected.

- and with this suggestion Ill stop derailing this thread that is properly for GalNet submissions, and not the discussion of procedures. Sorry about that.

We actually have our own player-written Galnet right now. You're reading it right now :)

I don't just visit this forum to submit articles. I read what everyone else has submitted so that I have a better idea of what other players are doing across the galaxy. Don't think that just because it doesn't get published in-game people aren't reading it. Yes, it isn't as gratifying as seeing it published in-game but as far as local news goes more people are likely to read those articles HERE on the forum then will ever see it in game.

But you know as we all know that only GalNet publications are considered as "canon". This forum is not enough to populate player driven stories. If it was the case, there were no justification to Galnet existence.

Title: EXO Celebrates One Year
Location: Exo Space (Wolf 1301, Wayaliti, LDS 883, BD+14 611, Xang Tzu, Kogich, 50 Omega Tauri, Wuniez, Badja, Roustem, Tomas) and any other system you deem relevant.
Description: EXO Wing Commander DrunkRenegade12 has marked September 13 as the date of the faction's exodus from their former system and establishment as their own organization. EXO first made a name for itself through the development and distribution of a specialized Contextual Pilot Interface, known colloquially as 'the box'. Since establishing themselves in Wolf 1301, EXO has participated in the founding of the New Galactic Cooperative of Worlds, waged several successful wars, and formed alliances across the galaxy Through clever economic and inexorable peacekeeping efforts, they have united many disparate systems under the common banner of democracy and cooperation. Despite occasional controversy regarding their methods or engagements, their impact on the galaxy is worth noting. There are no major festivities for EXO's first 'birthday' planned at time of writing, though well-wishers are encouraged to keep their comms open for future announcements. - Chronicler Ursus the Grim

Well if we are fully acknowledged by FD or not, our BGS work can not be denied. So if they don't want our version, they should hurry to make up their own once it starts.

What would be nice would just to be advised if a submission is rejected, and why.

As noted in the guidelines at the top of this thread, we usually give feedback only if there are small, objective issues with a submission (e.g. mentioning a particular character or organisation that we intend to use in our own story, or neglecting to include a location for publication). Given the finite amount of time at our disposal, it isn’t possible for us to enter into a discussion about more complex or subjective issues.

Title: War of the Words

Description:

There were heated exchanges today on the Federal politics show 'Olympus Mons PowerTalk' as naturalist Ulla Burton and alien conspiracy writer Albert George Kalos grappled over the origin of the mysterious remains.

Host Kirk Shultz soon lost control as Kalos hit out: "Ulla is clearly a Federal apologist. Space crabs? Alien fungi? Only an idiot would believe that! The government has clearly paid you to bury the truth."

Burton retorted "Who believes its ancient aliens? These remains are clearly of a space crab or large flying crustacean."

As the show came to a hasty close, Kalos had the last word:

"I'm not saying its ancient aliens, it sentient insects, and we need to get ready for their arrival! What do you think the Federal and Imperial governments are building warships for, Galactic prom night? It wasn't a giant flying crab talking to Halsey out there in deep space."

Title: Ghost Ships at Cemiess

Description:

Many citizens of Cemiess have reported being scanned by unidentified ships while in the system. Commander Jonuss of Radio Sidewinder had been collecting the reports before making the following statements on the radio:

"The reports are coming in from all over Cemiess, but it seems most of these scans by "ghost ships" occur at the local Nav Beacon. Reports indicate of "Scan Detected" warnings while no ships were visible on sensors. A few people claim they managed to catch a glimpse of a black colored ship flying away at extremely high speeds after the scan, but others say there really wasn't anyone around when they were scanned."

"I think that the Children of Raxxla are behind these actions. It seems they are taking the investigation in their own hands as the authorities of Cemiess continues to refuse to cooperate."

Bravo to CMDR Gan/Rubberneck for the Ogilvy and Ulla references. I was chuckling into my tea. :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Ha ha, I'm really glad you got the references!

With all my stories I try to make up names based on real life, making the most of the 150 word limit to add something 'more'- with the more serious Utopian science based reports I use names alluding to the noted scientists or philosophers of that field, and the satirical I use celebrities. I had a crazy chef on Galnet called Oliver Gordon (Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver), Hairy Commanders (The Hairy Bikers) etc.

Title : First Outlander Arrives at Jaques

Location : Jaques Station (or anywhere in the bubble)

Time : As soon as convenient

This week saw the arrival of CMDR Maikeru to Jaques Station. Maikeru is the first pilot to complete the Outlander Challenge - an event sponsored by the recently formed Colonia Citizens Network based out at Jaques.

The challenge tasked commanders to leave their old lives behind, shed themselves of all their worldly possessions and wealth, hop into a Sidewinder, and head out to Jaques with nothing more than the loose change left over from a FSD and Fuel Scoop upgrade. Their goal? To begin life anew in a golden land of opportunity and adventure - to become an Outlander Colonist.

Across 22,000 LYs these interpreted pilots journeyed, and upon their arrival at Jaques their next task was to earn 1 million credits, purely as a colonist out within the Colonia Nebula. They did this by mining, localized exploration, and bounty hunting.

On September 5th 3302, CMDR Maikeru became the first 'Outlander' by achieving all the goals the challenge set.

Title: Canonn responds to allegations of Pseudoscience and scaremongering
date: anytime
Location: Galnet

In response to a recent report by Ulla Burton, Canonn responded:

"We can assure Ms Burton that the Unknown Derelict's resemblance to a "space crab" was noted almost immediately, and was studied closely by scientists of the Canonn Xeno-Oceanographic Department, comparing it to known Terrestrial Crustaceans and other simple carbon water based lifeforms found throughout human space . Their findings are just a small part of the current theories currently under investigation. Yes, the possibility that the Wreck is of Thargoid origin has not been discounted, as well as other possibilities that are currently under investigation. Canonn, as a rule, do not release such findings until they have been properly scientifically tested and peer-reviewed.

Ms Burton's slanderous comments are clearly aimed at discrediting Canonn as a "tinfoil" fringe organisation, instead of the serious scientific endeavor it is. Something that does discredit to the whole scientific community, herself included."
