Main thing for additional slots is to separate them fully. So each one gets its own set of assets
(Money, Rank, Reputation, Ship, Location,....)
I will love it for sure.

The whole point of having different Commander slots would be that you have an entirely new and separate experience. I'm not asking for an 'Account Bank' or something like that, just a new and clean slate.

I bought the game at full price, and then Horizons when it was being sold with a 'loyalty discount' for those who
already owned the game. Otherwise, at that time, people who didn't already own Elite Dangerous could buy Horizons and get the full game plus the expansion. Later on, the 'season' model was dramatically changed and heavily discounted along with the base game.

My point is, with this thread, that I've already paid money for this game. Why should I have to pay more just to enjoy a new experience, without destroying my current character?

I too bought the game at full price (before release), and pre-ordered Horizons with the same loyalty discount (I believe it was £10) - so that's £35 for ED, £30 for Horizons, and I think about £10 on skins over the two years I've been playing.

I share your desire for multiple commanders. I just don't think we'll ever see it implemented in what is (generally) the standard way.

As to why you should have to pay, well...I'm sure as far as FD are concerned - that's what you paid for - and they're happy for you to have to sacrifice hundreds of hours of progress, or to pony up some more cash to experience it from the beginning.

If that were indeed their perspective, then I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them money in the future, because that is just..... silly, for lack of a better word.

.... but in terms of experiencing new content, each player (without a Lifetime Expansion Pass) will require to do just that as new content will be locked to new Seasons as they come out.

You guys would really pay money for a second character, after you've already payed so much for the game? I don't understand that, I'm sorry. I could understand it if you wanted to make more than 3 or 5 Commanders though, like you are paying for additional 'slots' like another game does it, but to outright pay for one additional slot just seems like way too much money.

Of course I wouldn't be against getting a free CMDR slot, however I can understand if FDEV wants to charge us for it.

- giving out free slots means that people no longer buy 2nd accounts
- developing CMDR slots costs money
- storing the savegames costs money
- continuing the game and delivering free updates costs money
- at some point there will be no more new people buying the game because everyone interested in ED will already own it
- no money = no updates

I agree that giving 1-2 additional slots for free would be nice though, charging for additional slots sounds fair.

Yes, but I'm not talking about new players specifically. This is about the ability to create multiple identities for yourself, like you can in other games, so that you can play the game any way you like. If you are a new player, then you will hardly be concerned with the fact that you can potentially make up to 3 commanders.

This is awfully fatalistic.

I was not referring to new players - existing players will require to purchase each new season if they want to experience the content locked to it.

What restricts a player from being able to "play the game any way you like" using their current commander? (other than wanting to be at different locations)

This is awfully fatalistic.

I see it as being realistic

What you had initially said has been changed, so my quote of it above is no longer relevant. There is no marker for it, just a "..." at the beginning now.

I think you need to pay for additional commanders, mostly due to the reason that I want FDev to continue FDeving and not wind up this project due to lack of revenue.

TANSTAFL - There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

Investment to date gives you what has been released to date, to continue to get releases there needs to be methods of extracting money from people (end of the day Frontier is a business employing people and that costs money), this seems an interesting and rewarding way to get people who want additional CMDRs to pay for it and then utilise these "slots".

Without meaning to diverge from the topic/poll too much...

What would be a good implementation, would be that for each season you purchase - you get a new commander to go with it.

Obviously I know where you're coming from in terms of multiple slots having played some of the games you cited.

I would actually be happy to pay a single one-time charge for a second slot on my existing account but I'm talking about say £10, not the price of the full game. Obviously I'd rather have it free, I'm not completely insane, but a one-off small charge isn't a deal-breaker for me. For that though I would expect my second slot to have the same access as to all the content I buy as my first one, in particular season passes.

That's the biggie for me really, at a stretch I would even pay for a second licence for the base game considering that it's very cheap now but expecting people to buy two copies of each season pass as well is just nuts when multiple character slots are common in MMOs.

That's interesting. And yeah, I know we both used to play BSGO. I can't justify paying for a second Commander, or a 3rd, if it were to be 10 euros or what, 5 dollars? 10 bucks for a new experience! No, go frak yourself. Not even 5 dollars. Not even 1 dollar. For one additional Commander slot, 1 dollar? No. Absolutely not, and you will see no more of my money. The limit has to be atleast 3, and then if you want more then maybe pay a couple bucks for a few more slots.

I am all for buying multiple character slots. To anyone would object with "just buy multiple accounts", that is not the same. A new account means you also have to buy twice any expansion/season (or lifetime pass) and all paintjobs, and you would lose out things like paintjobs no longer in the store, backer and founder decals etc. And frankly, while for example 10€ is a fair price for a 2nd CMDR slot, the price of the game + future expansions + paintjobs is entirely unreasonable to ask for that feature.
