***POLL NOW CLOSED*** IMPORTANT, OFFICIAL SHIP TRANSFER POLL

What about the players that don't use the forums? They do exist and without having any stats on hand I would hazard to guess they are actually the crushing majority. How can a voluntary poll coming from the forums really reflect what players want?

If they don't pay attention to the forum or the announcements, what else can FD do about it? Spam them with emails for the polls? If someone is not checking the forums is also unlikely to be interested in this sort of stuff.

This is a good poll. If not having a delay on such feature kills the immersion for some people, I would also suggest a delay for refueling, rearming, repairing, repainting, loading/unloading a substantial amount of cargo. Replacing core ship systems such as FSD and Power plant. as realistically, these things doesn't happen instantly.

Relevant again?

Pretty much this. It's game design, not simulation. We're talking about fantasy space ships after all. If ship transport gets designed around people whose immersion (urgh...) can't cope with it being potentially instant with cost based on distance and ship value, why shouldn't the game regress to every design getting a fantasy delay, because things can't be instant.

You forgot to mention the instant pilot transfer and rebuy upon ship destruction though. Should take at least as long to be allowed to play again after ship destruction, as it took you to get from your last docking location to the point of your ship destruction. We can't have people instantly jumping in their polished replacement ships, it's not realistic. ;) They need to feel the gravity of ship destruction in this simulation and must stand the consequences of their errors (shot down traders, especially! :D)! Where would we get, if pilot rescue capsules could automagically beam across the galaxy?

Hey Sandro,

As an opponent to instant transfer I am glad you guys are thinking some more about this topic.

Now regarding the actual numbers, although I am absolutely fine with a minimum delay of 5 minutes which sounds plenty believable (which was my main issue with instant transfer beside the gameplay implications), and without really knowing how these will scale with distance, I do feel like 5 minutes minimum might be a bit much for some people. Of course for those only interested in the feature to relocate one big fleet of ship from one home system to another (and thus who probably don't need all of those ships immediatly) virtually any delay would do, but I know there are those who just want to be able to quickly accesss a specialized, low jump range ship. For those players, 5 minutes is both way too short to do much in-game in the meantime, but also probably a bit too long to just wait it out and might lead to them just doing something else entirely.

Now again I don't know how that will scale with distance, it's quite possible that the way you want to implement it we'll rarely wait just the minimum delay and thus might have more time to go for a round of bounty hunting while waiting, or it could be that it will be a lot more common than I think. But with that in mind, personally I'd be also okay if the minimum delay was reduced to something more bearable for those wanting their ship sooner rather than later. My main concern with that change and Michael Brooke's explanation was one of believability and immershun, but I feel like whether the minimum is 2 minutes or 10 minutes, the handwavium is much easier to swallow than if there was no delay at all.

Still I realize that your main preoccupation here is the effects on gameplay, not so much our sense of immersion, and that reducing that timer would bring us closer to those negative effects you mentioned.

Sandro - if we could at least SEE a bulk carrier arriving at the destination station, that would make for another awesome cinematic moment in the game :)

Doesn't matter if at first we don't see ships being carted to and from it (thought that would be awesome) - just seeing such an event would be nice - although I suspect you don't have the dev time for such - oh well :D

Give that man the whole jar of cookies!

I find this a very difficult decision. In general I support the choice of plausible travel times, which not only adds immersion but also gameplay in the form of choices. Where do I choose to park my ships for easy access? Which parts of the bubble are important for me? There's a reason to have two combat ships in different places in the bubble if you want to be able to respond quickly to BGS events in both areas. This becomes even more relevant when things like the Jaques bubble start to grow and become more interesting places to be.

The one reservation I have about this: Engineers and their mods. Working on upgrading your ship modules confines you to the bubble, and with non-instant transfers this will make managing a good collection of modded ships more like how inconvenient things are now, especially if you'd like to have some of these modded ships available at Jaques. If the new Jaques bubble is to become a full fledged place to live, a solution for gathering the materials and applying these mods without having to go all the way back to the original bubble is needed.

Secondly, I'm guessing that right now the transfer feature can only work on a pull basis. IE, you have to get to Jaques before you can request your other ships to be sent there. That will force you to then wait several days on your other ships to get there and that's not acceptable. If you were going to Jaques in an exploration ship and anticipated mining there, you need to be able to request your ship to be transfered to Jaques before you leave, so it's ready and waiting when you get there.

Hello Commander CMDR Pugwash!

The delivery time would be a minimum of around five minutes, representing basic logistics of getting your ship loaded into a bulk carrier, followed by an additional time cost per light year to be travelled. The ballpark we are looking at would mean a delay of around 100 minutes if you transfered a ship from one edge of human space to the other (around 300 light years).

First: Thank you for the poll. Very appreciated and it shows (again) that FD cares a lot about the community. Thanks.

Second: The bulk carrier concept is interesting and cool - I hope we will be able to see those bulk carriers in a future update ;)

Third: An other option would be to let CMDRs hire NPCs to fly their ships to the new destination. Ships with short jump ranges would take longer to reach the destination (2 min/jump? in addition to average take off and docking times) and higher ranked (Exploration) NPCs could manage to get to the destination faster.

Whatever the result is I hope the explanation isn't 3D printing. Even the explanation "just ignore what happened and assume it took time" is better than 3D printing.

Again, thanks for the poll and listening to the community.

You can only publicise it as best you can. If they're not interested then they're not interested.

I don't give a monkeys how long the transfer takes, just as long as it isn't instant or less time than it would take the pilot to fly it there themselves.

You still have to walk to the point, and request the character change. Not seeing the harm here. You cannot send your character to any point...you have to be at the point to request the change.

Yes, but now that character you're changing to.. doesn't have to walk to the point. And that's a problem for me.

An instant-transfer mechanic takes away decision making, it takes away consideration, it takes away planning, it takes lore and completely throws it out the window.. if we can instant-transfer our ships all over the place, why can't we just instant-transfer our ship from a star to a station? Why do we even have ships? Can't I just instant-transfer myself across the stars? Yes, I'm getting ridiculous but it's to make a point, lol.

I strongly feel that instant-transfer takes more from ED than it contributes.

For me, the additional level of realism, and more importantly planning required, outweighs any minor inconvenience whilst waiting for a ship to arrive.

I'm torn with the issue. For one, making a person wait is the way to do it, however, not everyone has 4 kids, a job, other things that prevent someone from playing as much as they would like. Years ago, I would easily say wait but in my situation, I really want my ship now vs. later. Besides, in this advanced tech world, once would think there would be a way to "beam a ship over." :p

what about an official poll about RNGineer remove ? gameplay break isn't more important to be resolved first ?

Didn't you get tired about criticizing engineers until now? Thats all you did since the engineers launch.
Get over it, you're acting like an ex-girlfriend    .

Actually I make those journeys at 50-75% throttle, same as all the other ships in the shipping lane. That is my 'fun gameplay' because it requires me to fly my ship and allows me to appreciate being a space pilot. I bought ED for the sim aspect.

Yes, I will say that the game can be very realistic sometimes. For example, if I have to make a journey of more than 5000ls, I usually set it to 75%, then go do the dishes and clean up the kitchen and suchlike.

A video game that I play for entertainment shouldn't be the thing I do on the side while I watch Netflix, and yet most of the time spent traveling is exactly that - a screensaver for my main monitor while the second monitor watches Netflix. Supercruise shipping gameplay is about as compelling as the old Windows screensaver with the stars.

But here's the best part: even if ship transfer were instant, you could still fly your ship manually. They aren't removing "flying ships," they are adding a feature that people who want to use can, and people who don't want to use don't have to. You can still use a disposable Hauler Taxi to go get your other ship and then fly it back, hell you can fly it entirely in Supercruise without ever using Hyperjump if you want, just all flying in a straight line at 2000c for hours and hours, and my using instant transport to bring a Ferdelance out to Deciat won't change a thing for you.

you at no point have to stop playing, you still have ship capabale of doing things while the other is on the way. If you prefer to just wait and do nothing thats you choice.

Sometimes yes, but not always. Say I wing up to do canyon racing. My friend has his racing ship, mine is 150lyr away and I got a T6. Am I supposed to play the day after ? Wait 1h while my friend do canyon racing alone ?
Do racing with a T6 (like this is going to be a race lol). Most likely outcome : don't bother and go play something else that can be setup for co-op play in less than one hour. Like overwatch, WoT, or pretty much any other
multiplayer game.

So, definitly instant transfer for me.

Stop with the immersion nonsense, if you have to read anything, at least read the first post of this thread.

I have to say thank you to FD for seeing reason in relation to this issue and taking the feedback from the community in relation to same. Therefore I support completely option 2 and time delay.

Yes to delay.

Ship transfer is needed but not instant.
Part of me wants it.

Part of me doesn't.
It was nice having to plan ahead for CGs and even ship build choices mattered.

With transfer not so much.
