EVE online already dealt with this problem via their Jump Clone mechanic. If we apply that same mechanic to Elite, it would work like this:

You can summon a ship to you once per 24 hours instantly. Module summoning...meh, let it be infinite. Nobody's going to do 'bad stuff' with 100 pulse lasers on instant summon.

This isn't Eve Online. The difference is that you can opt-out of multiplayer and not be affected. That changes the circumstances considerably. Changes to Elite Dangerous should be based on what it is and not on what a different kind of game is.

This should be a simple matter of what is better for the game. Instant transfer is better for the game.

Instant transfer saves people time, a factor across all play styles.
It enables players to experience more of the game and spend more time doing what they want, which is hopefully fun.

More people having fun, more positive reviews, more feedback to the devs, more feedback to the community, more players joining in, more support and funds to the game, better/faster/more frequent updates and fixes.

When ordering a pizza, would you prefer it delivered now, or later?

By that logic you would implement insta-travel and insta-kill, insta-Elite rank etc.. literally an argument for the win button.

What instant transfer does is begin the era of taxis and hyper specialization.

All ships have some element of balance to them because they have to travel between systems and perform a task. If you remove the 'travel between systems' aspect, you are able to hyper specialize a ship.

Simply put, ship transfer in the manner described will give rise to players in 50LY taxi-Asps and 1LY hard core-FDLs.

This change is going to cause a massive imbalance between the ships that still have to account for both inter system travel and their task (Traders and explorers), with hyper specialized in-system ships (Miners, Combat etc).
 
Hmmm I'm actually torn.
On one hand is a more convenient and better option for those with busy lives like me that can be implemented sooner .
On the other is the option that is more lore friendly that may delay the next update.
Hmmm

Timed transfer is still much more convenient than the current situation, where you have to fly back X lightyears to grab your other ship, then fly all the way back again.
 
A big reason I voted for delayed transfer is it keeps more future development options open. Although I think the specific numbers put out by FD are too large, and don't like having them in the poll because I feel it will bias the poll against timed transfers, I believe it is better to go with even a poorly implemented delay because at least with that, we can keep pushing FD to develop it into a solution that works for just about everybody.

But if we go with instant, we'll be stuck with it. Like a monkey with their hand in a jar, too many players won't want to let go of the instant gratification even if doing so is necessary to improve the game.

Just announcing instant transfers in the first place has already sort of had this effect. If they had announced a reasonable delay right from the start, everyone would have been so happy to have transfers at all that making them instant wouldn't even have come up. But they've already made that mistake. So here we are, trying to pry our hands out of the jar.

Where do you order a pizza that's made and delivered across town instantly?
 
I just hope that we will be able to see the poll results after the poll will be closed.

This poll is official, it is necessary to log-in (confirm that the voter really have the game) etc. I really would like to know how the votes was distributed between players and how many players voted.
