***POLL NOW CLOSED*** IMPORTANT, OFFICIAL SHIP TRANSFER POLL

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Unless they get over 400,000 votes total then the 700 people that voted doesnt mean a thing. There are over 800000 copies of this game sold on steam alone. In the last week almost 100,000 players logged in. 6000 logged in via steam yesterday.

So if the vote does not equal at least 400,000 votes one way or the other, then this whole poll doesnt mean anything. Even a small sample size of 1% is 8000 votes in total. There is no way that the players of this game will represented regardless as to the results of this poll.

The poll has enough meaning for the design team though. Because they organized it his time. I don't know how design decisions should be implemented in videogames - but they will never be made with the written approval of all the playerbase. That's just impossible. Still, there are representatives in most videogame communities - chosen on the forums and so forth, going to the meetings, asking questions to the devs at gamescom / citizencon / blizzcon / whatevercon... Forums are the only real contact developers have - apart data. So they're not to be underestimated... IMO.

Some CMDRS have already spoken about being able to get heavy combat fitted ships with very tiny jump ranges 100's of LY's in minutes if they only have to fly there in a fast long-range ship first and instant transfer the other one. You don't think that will break a lot of the long-standing balance that has gone in to ship design for combat effectiveness vs jump range for the sake of convenience?

A new system where someone else does the 20+ jumps transfer for you, but the time remains the same is basically what it is being offered - while you can do something else at least.

This poll really is not needed.

The exiting one seems to indicate feelings quite nicely, with a 50/50 split between the 'instant or close to' people, and those who want 'longer/longest' wait times.

There is a hard line between people who want instant and people who do not want. This is like being pregnant. You cannot be in pregnant 'a bit'. You are in pregnat, or you are not. This is boolean, 0/1 answer.

There are people who want instant on one side, and people who do not want it on the other side. A question 'how long' is another question what could be placed after deciding instant or not.

Its like a be or not to be. You cant be 'a bit'. You can be or you can not to be.
Overhelming number of people - 3/4 - want id delayed somehow, and 1/4 want instant.

Choosing an instant would be so popular this times a 'terrorism of minority'. Why majority should play as minority want?
There is no divided community. There is a small group of loud folks who do not accept a fundaments of democracy.

I'm calling it right now. If you put a wait timer in front of players, they are simply going to shut the game down and play something else.

Yeah, and why not? They can play something else or do something else within Elite. It's not as if it's worse than no ship transfer at all. And instantaneous would simply render half the game irrelevant and be exploitable like hell. So this is a good compromise.

No, it's not. According to that last poll in the other thread.

Implement instant and ~75% are unhappy

Implement a trivial delay and ~75% are unhappy

Implement a long delay and ~75% are unhappy

Implement a "realistic" delay and ~75% are unhappy

There is no magic transfer number or rate that everyone can agree on. Fdev can't win on the "compromise." The best they can do is determine what their design goals are and design with them in mind.

And now their design goals seemed to have done a complete 180 from what they have announced at gamescom.

Secondly, just because we currently don't have bulk freighters in the game does not mean that we won't have things like this in the future (regardless of whether we have timed or instant ship deliveries) or even that they don't exist in the lore already (I believe the concept of mega freighters has always existed in Elite lore in some way).
.

Obviously not for 2.2, but

Glad to hear that "scenery" Bulk Carriers like the LRC and Lynx Bulk Carrier are ideas still under consideration, regardless of the outcome of the ship transfer delivery time.

Especially if they used the Capital Ship arrive and exits, and throw in the old Lifters shuttling back and forth between them [up]

How it will be explained in lore is really what will decide my vote, though actually now, I am kind of not fussed either way lol

People here keep saying that the forum users are but a small minority of the player base and that is true.

1. But they are the ones that discuss problems in a place to better bring them to dev attention.
2. They are the ones that when they beta test post results of problems in the bug forums.
3. Many of them are the ones that have been here the longest supporting development of ED

So why shouldn't FD be listening to them. I have been very critical of FD for a long time but this decision from them to listen, instead of tacking on a half baked feature idea is something that could help my faith in them.

I have not said this much to FD but THANK YOU

Proposed 'option 2' is acceptable for me (i was a folk who wanted a long delay).
Option 2 is +1 to happy from me.

No, i don't have the time to sit and wait for my ship for 2 hours. It's a colossal waste of my time i could be using to get in a hauler and get the thing myself. Immersion is no excuse at all.

Who makes you sit and wait for your ship? In contrast to the current situation, where you have to go and fetch the ship yourself and can't do anything else in the meantime, you are free to continue playing the game during the delivery without having to deal with the process yourself.

Nobody is forcing you to sit around and wait; just get on with your game-play whilst your ship gets delivered. As the game works now, you have to go back and fetch your ship. With transfer, you can continue playing the game whilst your ship gets delivered.
What difference does it make? Instant or delayed, either option will benefit you over your current game-play but your desire for instant-gratification dismisses delayed as some kind of massive inconvenience when it's anything but.

As I said, players like you don't want the Elite experience .. and that's perfectly fine but what isn't fine is wanting to change what Elite IS and HAS been for decades into something it's not, instead of moving on or (preferably) adapting .. but that's Frontiers fault for not sticking to their guns (as I mentioned already) from the get-go.

They might not know it. Instant transfers seems like the obvious selfish choice to me. "I want what I want when I want it. The rest be damned." If that's what people really want, so be it. Doesn't make for good compelling game design though.
Actually it's the other way round. If transfers were instant then you could, if you wanted to, impose a delay on yourself for reasons. If a delay is implemented, there is no way to make it instant.

Trying to cater to all you say ... Imagine:

"Greetings commander and welcome to the Ship Handling Intergalactic Transfer company. Please allow me to explain the levels of service we offer.

We have the bronze service which is used by the bulk of our customers. You place your order and when the next available transport ship is ready we move your ship to the hold and bring it here. Now, it's going to take some time as the transport ship needs to be filled first so we're looking at around 30 minutes to an hour depending upon the distance involved. As a result we will offer you a discount giving you more value for your credits. As this is our most popular choice the transport ship needs to make multiple stops along the way which is why it takes some time to get here.

We also have a silver service for those that would like their ship a little quicker. Yes, naturally it's a little more expensive as we rent out the entire transport ship just for you but the wait times are at a minimum. Around 5 minutes whilst we prep the transport ship and jump it straight here. The ship will make one jump from your hangar to ours rather than stopping off at multiple points along the way.

Yes sir, we do ensure that the ships are stowed correctly so that the paintwork is not affected and we also guarantee that any scratches or dinks are removed free of charge.

*nods* Indeed, yes, we do have a premium service as well. Allow me to introduce the new Gold service. It's very expensive sir but I can already tell from your hangar manifest that money is not a concern of yours. By the time you fill out the forms and indicate where your ship was located last and walk to the hangar it will be there waiting for you. Now let me say again, this is an immediate transfer, extremely expensive, but I assure you no one will move your ship faster than us.

Thank you for enquiring with the Ship Handling Intergalactic Transfer company.

We pride ourselves on making you happy."

3 tiers:
- Instant. Premium priced
- Minimal wait. Reasonably priced.
- Long wait. Cheap

Caters to casuals and the hardcore; time rich and cash poor alike ... plus as a bonus it mirrors the real world where money talks and [expletive] walks.

If you choose to ignore all the reasons why having instant ship transfers isn't a good idea.

But you're right about one thing at least though. I won't be using instant ship transfers either way. [smile]

I do like this solution best.

This, I believe, is Frontier's mistake .. trying to pander to many different types of players, instead of sticking to their guns and saying "This is the game we are making, this is our vision. Be a part of it, instead of trying to make into your own.".

Frontier did this. They said "we're putting in instant ship transfer. We think it's a good thing for players, and for the game." It was THEIR vision. Of course, then the forums went salty and "noooo mah immershion"... when the forums should have "been a part of it, instead of trying to make it their own". So yeah.

Everything Frontier develop, plan, and put into the game, is THEIR VISION. If space-legs turns into COD-ELITE, then it's THEIR VISION. If space-flight becomes to complex that it needs a crew of three with slide-rules just to take off, then it's THEIR VISION.

The problem is, the forums say "stick to what Elite is" and talk about Frontier's product being diluted, no Frontiers's product is Fronties product. Like Elite was. And E2 and E3. Those were classic games because Frontier WROTE THEM THE WAY THEY WANTED TO WRITE THEM. They didn't have backseat pilots criticising every design move they made, and trying to force them to make a game by committee. Trouble with Kickstarting is, everyone who has even put in £2 thinks they are on the board of investors and has a say in *everything* that happens in the design and programming and running of this game. You don't. Nor should you.

Then do not sit and do not wait. You can play in meantime of ship travelling.
The point of the ship transfer is that you don't want to play in the ship you're currently in, hence why you're transferring another. If you make people wait, they will go stuff this and play something else. Why do people think they will do something in Elite while they wait? Sure some will, I probably will from time to time but there is a huge part of the player base that will get annoyed at being made to wait and will play something else.

edit. And all for what? Because a vocal minority of the hardcores want their immersion
